His father was Charles trumble Hayden, one 00:03:24.069 --> 00:03:27.606 of the three founders of this university, 00:03:27.639 --> 00:03:30.916 Carl Hayden was elected as Arizona's first member of the House of 00:03:30.949 --> 00:03:36.286 Representatives in 1912. As a native Arizona, he Arizona and he had a long 00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:40.747 and abiding love affair with the state and its wild areas before the turn 00:03:40.780 --> 00:03:44.186 of the century. As a young man, he made the first of many visits to 00:03:44.219 --> 00:03:48.777 Northern Arizona and the Grand Canyon. The move from national monument status, the status is one of 00:04:46.670 --> 00:04:51.757 America's premier national parks reflected a complex political ballet 00:04:51.790 --> 00:04:56.947 involving the federal government, the the nation state of Arizona. It's 00:04:56.980 --> 00:05:03.207 legislative delegation and numerous localities and business interests. 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:07.507 In 1916, Representative Hayden wrote to Willis Borg, the Secretary of the 00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:11.496 Flagstaff Board of Trade, responding to the resolution on the 00:05:11.529 --> 00:05:16.647 establishment of the National Park in the Grand Canyon. He wrote, I'm just 00:05:16.680 --> 00:05:20.337 in receipt of your letter transmitting a resolution regarding the 00:05:20.370 --> 00:05:24.616 establishment of the Grand Canyon national Park and I'm greatly interested 00:05:24.649 --> 00:05:29.337 in this matter in changing the present National Monument to a National 00:05:29.370 --> 00:05:34.616 Park care must be exercised. However, that the water power and mineral 00:05:34.649 --> 00:05:39.796 resources of the Canyon are made available for use. Hayden's response 00:05:39.829 --> 00:05:45.007 encapsulates much of the Stormont drawing that went into hammering out the 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:50.366 literal entrepreneurial and environmental parameters of the park, and this 00:05:50.399 --> 00:05:55.937 is where the whole concept of boundaries comes. As the main protagonist of the Grand Canyon Bill is written. 00:14:50.539 --> 00:14:54.256 He almost single handedly led the somewhat 10uous campaign to have at 00:14:54.289 --> 00:15:00.407 least part of the Grand Canyon declared in Arizona State Park. Think on 00:15:00.440 --> 00:15:06.537 that for a minute, if the Grand Canyon were also an Arizona state park 00:15:06.570 --> 00:15:12.096 that we are, we're closing all of the rest areas. I can imagine what we 00:15:12.129 --> 00:15:18.266 would do if we had a state park. It was an error at the Grand Canyon Bass 00:15:18.299 --> 00:15:23.236 almost single handedly led the simultaneous campaign. Okay, in July of 00:15:23.269 --> 00:15:27.886 1917, bass wrote to Hayden from Los Angeles outlining his thoughts on a 00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:32.846 state park at the Canyon, regarding your letter in relation to the 00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:37.876 national park at Grand Canyon. I find that there is considerable objection 00:15:37.909 --> 00:15:42.667 to the tying up of the entire region so that there will be no chance in 00:15:42.700 --> 00:15:47.807 the future of segregating any portion of it For the people of Arizona, 00:15:47.840 --> 00:15:51.557 there's a strong feeling that a certain portion not now occupied or 00:15:51.590 --> 00:15:56.407 utilized in any manner should be set apart for this class of visitors as a 00:15:56.440 --> 00:16:01.276 state park where provision could be made for all of their wants, it would 00:16:01.309 --> 00:16:05.376 seem as though our citizens should have some consideration before this 00:16:05.409 --> 00:16:10.717 matchless wonder is entirely placed under federal control. Speaking for the committee, 00:17:25.240 --> 00:17:30.226 Senator Henry Myers of Montana concluded the demand for the creation of 00:17:30.259 --> 00:17:35.566 this park has been insistent for many years since 181886, when first 00:17:35.599 --> 00:17:40.326 introduced by Senator Benjamin Harrison and in the bill, due regard has 00:17:40.359 --> 00:17:44.526 been given to the rights of the citizens of Arizona and of the individual 00:17:44.559 --> 00:17:48.717 property owners within the park boundaries. The rights of Coconino County 00:17:48.750 --> 00:17:53.937 to collect tolls over Bright Angel Trail had been specifically recognized 00:17:53.970 --> 00:17:59.407 one of my real interest initially was the whole controversy over Bright 00:17:59.440 --> 00:18:04.756 Angel Trail is a toll road. Um, the committee, however, is inclined to 00:18:04.789 --> 00:18:10.207 view to the view toll roads should not exist within a national park and 00:18:10.240 --> 00:18:13.947 therefore an amendment is suggested for the acquisition of the trail and 00:18:13.980 --> 00:18:19.286 question which as many know did not occur for a decade. Thus, with the outstretched 00:19:21.359 --> 00:19:24.986 hand of the federal bureaucracy, the legislative quest to establish Grand 00:19:25.019 --> 00:19:30.217 Canyon National Park is both confirmed and initially funded Carl Hayden 00:19:30.250 --> 00:19:34.877 along with his colleagues in the Senate inhabitants and entrepreneurs at 00:19:34.910 --> 00:19:39.907 the Grand Canyon and Arizona politicians and citizens of all stripes 00:19:39.940 --> 00:19:44.177 struggled and struggled and succeed in their quest to create a national 00:19:44.210 --> 00:19:49.667 park and one of the truly natural wonders of the entire world. However, the issues that 00:20:28.519 --> 00:20:32.597 drove the new boundaries revolved around grazing, among other things, land 00:20:32.630 --> 00:20:37.407 swaps and access. The first correspondence in the Hayden papers dealing 00:20:37.440 --> 00:20:43.147 with the boundary issues occurs in April 1925. This first from the manager 00:20:43.180 --> 00:20:48.806 of babbitt Brothers trading company deals with grazing. My dear carl, 00:20:48.839 --> 00:20:52.526 we're enclosing a map showing the present boundaries of the Grand Canyon 00:20:52.559 --> 00:20:57.657 national Park.
