Push/Pull features the performance and choreographic work of an intergenerational cast. Their varied previous dance experience spans the spectrum between no formal dance training to professional performance. Throughout a nine- month period, participants focused on researching and questioning relationships of power, particularly pedagogically. Each dancer involved contributed significantly to choreography, studying issues, considering alternatives, and generating movement, both during and outside practice sessions. A Place of Crossing: is a physical exploration of Sara's personal spiritual journey. Accompanied by a chorus of individuals who have been present at places of crossing throughout her life, Sara wrestles with making sense of this her life at this time of turmoil and change. Watch for gestures inspired by Buddhist and Christian iconography. The Feeling of What Happens: Forêt furieuse is the ninth movement of Forêt prodonde (1994-96) by Francis Dhomont. The work was first released in 1996 by empreintes DIGITALes on the compact disc Forêt prodonde (IMED 9634). Tonight’s usage is performed by permission. Biographies: Mary Fitzgerald has been active in the professional dance community as a performer, choreographer, teacher and bodyworker for many years. She was a member of Kei Takei’s Moving Earth for nearly ten years, performing and teaching internationally. Ms. Fitzgerald also has danced for A Ludwig Dance Theatre, Fred Darsow Dance and numerous independent choreographers. She has been a guest artist at several colleges, universities and studios in the United States, Europe, Japan, China, Mexico, Colombia and Israel. Currently she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dance at Arizona State University, where she has received two Distinguished Teaching Awards from the Herberger College of the Arts. From 19982007, she served as co-artistic director of Dance Arizona Repertory Theatre, the community dance organization. As an independent choreographer, Ms. Fitzgerald regularly presents her own choreography in the local community, and internationally. She has received support from the Ministry of Culture of Mexico, Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and the Herberger College of the Arts. She is a winner of the 2005 Arizona Choreography Competition, and a recipient of a 2006 Artists Project Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Sara Malan-McDonald, originally from Shelley ID, is a MFA candidate in Dance at Arizona State University. After receiving two Bachelors of Fine Arts Degrees in Dance and Art History from Brigham Young University, Sara decided to continue her dance education at ASU. While in graduate school, she had performed for various dance professionals and choreographers including Mary Fitzgerald and Elina Mooney. In 2007, Sara acted as liaison between ASU and Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, coordinating with Gammage Events and local high schools to organize and present Youth Arts Night. This program featured area youth performing and reciting original, cooperatively created choreography and poetry contemplating the human genome. A versatile teacher, Sara has had the opportunity to function as a Teaching Assistant throughout her sojourn at ASU. This charge has allowed for her to teach a variety of classes in the Dance Department for both majors and non-majors alike. Sara’s dance instruction also extends to Phoenix area elementary and high school classes. Over the course of her post graduate work, Sara has received recognition and support for her work, including Hope and Robert Heiman Memorial Award, ASU Special Talent Award, Regent Scholarship, and Katherine K. Herberger Scholarship. Sara’s most recent research, and postgraduate goal, is working to expand accessibility and significance of the art of dance to more people through community interchange. After receiving her degree, Sara intends to stay in the Phoenix area and pursue a teaching position in higher education. Sara would like to thank the numerous faculty and staff with whom she has the honor of working, her ASU family-the graduate students and momma Jeanette- who have made it possible for her to continue to pursue her career goals while at the same time functioning as a full-time mother, her family and especially her wonderful husband and daughter who believe in her dreams more ardently than she and whose support and perspective continue to root her to that which is important and carry her through life’s storms. Holly Wooldridge, a native Californian, has been studying movement and the body her whole life. As a dancer, educator and scholar she strives to live in the moment by continually questioning, laughing and moving. Holly received a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah and is currently a MFA candidate at Arizona State University. Ms. Wooldridge has performed, choreographed and taught in California, Utah, Wyoming and Arizona. During her time in the Bay Area, Holly was privileged to work as a teaching artist for the Lincoln Center Institute in Berkeley. This approach to art forever changed Holly's perspective on education, community, art making and her role as a performing artist. Ms. Wooldridge has performed with Pappas and Dancers, Contemporary Dance Wyoming and most recently CONDER/dance. Holly has also performed both historical and contemporary works by numerous choreographers such as Jose Limon, Isadora Duncan, Babs Case, Lisa Townsend, Lisa Race, Carley Conder, Shouze Ma, Karen Schupp and Mary Fitzgerald. While at ASU she was fortunate to teach ballet and modern technique, Dance in World Cultures, perform at the National American College Dance Festival in New York, organize dance works for Mesa Arts Center's Sound in the Ground and was the recipient of numerous awards such as the Hope and Robert Heimann Scholarship, Rychlick Family Fellowship and Special Talent Award in dance. Holly plans to continue both her academic and creative research in the areas of the dancer's experience and dance conditioning. After receiving her degree, she intends to head in the direction of San Francisco, continue her creative and academic research, teach Pilates and eventually pursue a career in higher education. Holly would like to thank the faculty and staff for their generosity over the past years, her committee for their guidance, dear friends and family for their unending support and sense of humor, Marlina Kessler for her enthusiasm and last but not least a special thank you to Augie Hernandez for everything.
