And I don't know if you've ever had this experience 00:00:35.399 --> 00:00:40.037 where you've submitted presentation, title, um, for a conference and then 00:00:40.070 --> 00:00:43.597 changed your mind about what you're going to talk about. Anyway, so I want to start with a little 00:00:51.189 --> 00:00:53.987 bit of context because I am an archivist and I want to talk about some of 00:00:54.020 --> 00:00:58.586 the early explorers in the grand cane. So up there were, uh, you were seen 00:00:58.619 --> 00:01:03.116 as John Wesley Powell. Everybody knows pal is, um, leaping. Apparently, 00:01:03.149 --> 00:01:06.846 across the Grand Kane is Emery Kolb and his brother else. Worthies were 00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:10.406 two gentlemen that came to the Grand Kane the early twentieth century. 00:01:10.439 --> 00:01:14.596 Emery took some of the most amazing photographs early on in the early 00:01:14.629 --> 00:01:18.576 nineteenth century of the green came next to every there is William Walls 00:01:18.609 --> 00:01:22.406 Bass with this foot someplace. 00:01:22.439 --> 00:01:25.926 Um, and William malls. Bass was there in the late nineteenth century and 00:01:25.959 --> 00:01:28.647 early twentieth century. Have heard a little bit about William and his 00:01:28.680 --> 00:01:33.997 wife eight already. And then, uh, next William Wallace passed. There is, 00:01:34.030 --> 00:01:38.857 uh, uh, George Morton James, who was an author, uhm journalists. And he 00:01:38.890 --> 00:01:45.057 wrote one of the early, uh, hiking guides for the Grand Canyon. 00:01:45.090 --> 00:01:48.467 There are many more explorers, those air just for that, I thought I'd 00:01:48.500 --> 00:01:53.016 choose. But prior to Western exploration, it needs to be acknowledged that 00:01:53.049 --> 00:01:56.326 there was indigenous activity in the Grand Canyon. And anyone who's ever 00:01:56.359 --> 00:02:00.807 hiked in the Grand Cain sees the evidence of that activity all over the 00:02:00.840 --> 00:02:03.757 place on the trails. And many of the trails that we consider corridor 00:02:03.790 --> 00:02:07.686 trails or even routes were definitely established by Native Americans and 00:02:07.719 --> 00:02:11.617 indigenous communities. Um, and one of the things that want to kind of 00:02:11.650 --> 00:02:15.217 point out is that not only were these early explorers and there's a lot of 00:02:15.250 --> 00:02:19.356 Native American activity in the Grand Canyon, but I think, um, and I don't 00:02:19.389 --> 00:02:22.307 think I'm stretching here. But the petro glitz and the rock art that we 00:02:22.340 --> 00:02:26.117 see down in the Grand Cain is definitely a form of communication and 00:02:26.150 --> 00:02:29.767 probably guide and similar to mapping is just not the type of mapping that 00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:33.786 we consider traditional mapping here today. 00:02:33.819 --> 00:02:36.617 Um, so some of the early maps again, this isn't going to be a history of 00:02:36.650 --> 00:02:39.946 mapping of the Grand Canyon from my perspective or my thing, but it just 00:02:39.979 --> 00:02:43.987 want to show a few slides of early maps of the grand cane. It's just a huge feature on this map, but there's a very little 00:02:53.139 --> 00:02:58.256 detail associated with it again. This is before Palin's up going down 00:02:58.289 --> 00:03:02.816 through the drinking in Colorado River. So not a ton of details. This's a guidebook of the 00:03:06.900 --> 00:03:10.936 Grand Canyon of Arizona, and it's authored by these two gentleman named 00:03:10.969 --> 00:03:17.886 young and big now, and I'm gonna have to read one of the quotes. Um, and on the 00:03:41.539 --> 00:03:45.886 page in the right hand side, uh, Bicknell says, the map of the Grand 00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:50.376 Canyon here offered is an attempt to meet the constant demand of tourists 00:03:50.409 --> 00:03:54.867 who naturally wish to knew something about the lay of the land. The first 00:03:54.900 --> 00:03:58.886 desire of a traveller on arriving in a new region to him is to find out 00:03:58.919 --> 00:04:03.256 where he's at, and there's no more satisfactory mess headed for arriving 00:04:03.289 --> 00:04:08.797 at that desire knowledge than by consulting a correct map. The mapping of the upper half of the Grand Canyon of the 00:05:10.259 --> 00:05:14.217 Colorado River in Arizona. The work was begun in nineteen o too long 00:05:14.250 --> 00:05:17.947 before the establishment of the national park had been contemplated at the 00:05:17.980 --> 00:05:22.377 instance of Dr Charles the Walcott. And we know that Walcott spent some 00:05:22.410 --> 00:05:26.746 time with the grand cane in nineteen o one, Um, then director the 00:05:26.779 --> 00:05:30.087 Geological Survey, who first saw the demand that would arise for a 00:05:30.120 --> 00:05:34.627 detailed map of the Grand Canyon region, both from the public, who even at 00:05:34.660 --> 00:05:38.067 this time were flocking in numbers to see the chasm and from the 00:05:38.100 --> 00:05:40.926 scientific world. I think that's a really important quote to keep in mind 00:05:40.959 --> 00:05:46.757 , because up until this point, there are no detailed maps in Walcott is 00:05:46.790 --> 00:05:51.786 before seeing not only the value but the, um uh, the need for detailed map 00:05:51.819 --> 00:05:55.837 and then the ramifications of having a detailed map like that that people 00:05:55.870 --> 00:06:00.116 are going to use this map and exploring the Grand Canyon, especially the 00:06:00.149 --> 00:06:04.392 public. So, um, here we are. The maps there's actually should have 00:06:04.425 --> 00:06:08.022 anticipated that somebody would have brought these maps. So, um, here they 00:06:08.055 --> 00:06:12.452 are about the math of seven snaps you haven't had an opportunity to see. 00:06:12.485 --> 00:06:16.882 These maps are actually just stunning maps in one of my favourite objects 00:06:16.915 --> 00:06:21.803 that are, that's in our collections. So, Harvey, but chart, uh, for 00:06:25.115 --> 00:06:29.353 those that don't know was born in nineteen o seven, Um, he comes to 00:06:29.386 --> 00:06:33.933 Flagstaff, Arizona, Um, after he applied for a position at Arizona State 00:06:33.966 --> 00:06:37.803 College, which was what we used to call Northern Arizona University a long 00:06:37.836 --> 00:06:41.392 time ago. Harvey applies to become the department chair for the 00:06:41.425 --> 00:06:47.433 mathematics department and its sole member. So he comes here. He comes 00:06:47.466 --> 00:06:50.712 here in forty five with his family. They think there might There may have 00:06:50.745 --> 00:06:54.483 been some professional, um, interest in the position. I'm sure there was 00:06:54.516 --> 00:06:57.882 professional interest in the position. Um But I think Harvey's really 00:06:57.915 --> 00:07:01.582 interested in a couple other things or some personal drivers that are 00:07:01.615 --> 00:07:05.663 bringing Harvey this family out to the Grand Kane. First. His daughter has 00:07:05.696 --> 00:07:09.663 asthma, and he thought that the dry climate, ah, dry and arid climate of 00:07:09.696 --> 00:07:13.192 the Southwest would be beneficial for her. So there is that point. The 00:07:13.225 --> 00:07:16.902 second point was that Harvey's beginning to hike in the Colorado fourteen 00:07:16.935 --> 00:07:20.332 hours during his summer break. So he's starting to hike and explore 00:07:20.365 --> 00:07:25.332 already. And this job is conveniently located very close to Colorado for 00:07:25.365 --> 00:07:29.152 cheaters. But it's also close to the Grand Canyon, so there were many 00:07:29.185 --> 00:07:33.603 different factors that were definitely influencing Harvey and accepting 00:07:33.636 --> 00:07:37.233 this position at Arizona State College. So here's one of the first 00:07:37.266 --> 00:07:40.882 photographs, if not the first photograph of Harvey in the Grand Cane. So 00:07:40.915 --> 00:07:44.053 what is there everyone do when they moved to Flagstaff that go up to the 00:07:44.086 --> 00:07:47.313 Grand Kane, the other hang out at the South Rim and take it all in, or 00:07:47.346 --> 00:07:50.603 those who are more ambitious will hike it. So Harvey is one of the more 00:07:50.636 --> 00:07:54.003 ambitious folks. He takes his family down, and this is a picture of Harvey 00:07:54.036 --> 00:07:57.753 in the South Chi Pap suspension bridge. And I just love the way that 00:07:57.786 --> 00:08:00.402 Harvey's dressed right there. And that's pretty much the way Harvey and 00:08:00.435 --> 00:08:04.853 sub hiking the Grand Canyon. Um, for quite some time. I mean typically, 00:08:04.886 --> 00:08:11.165 where his khaki pants work, boots a shirt and maybe jack it up. It's cool. 00:08:12.016 --> 00:08:14.016 This is a a great photograph, but it's also important. Slide to, um, I 00:08:16.846 --> 00:08:19.663 don't know if you can see. I think the resolution may be off a little bit 00:08:19.696 --> 00:08:27.032 on this, but that's Harvey climbing Rutan's throne. He's tied in, Um, the 00:08:27.065 --> 00:08:31.543 person at the other end of the rope is Emery Kolb, and at first I didn't 00:08:31.576 --> 00:08:35.133 realize this, but I looked at this photograph on him like he's delaying 00:08:35.166 --> 00:08:38.533 Harvey but chart and taking a photograph of the same time. And this is 00:08:38.566 --> 00:08:42.742 long before we had little cameras, so I don't know what that says about 00:08:42.775 --> 00:08:46.442 both of them. But Harvey seems to be happy. 00:08:46.475 --> 00:08:50.683 So why does Harvey Matter? Harvey matters for a couple different reasons. 00:08:50.716 --> 00:08:55.242 Harvey begins hiking in the Grand Canyon, and he creates this amazing 00:08:55.275 --> 00:08:59.013 math, and we'LL see version of Harvey's map. Matha seven snap in just a 00:08:59.046 --> 00:09:03.663 moment. But one of the things that Harvey's doing is he's documenting his 00:09:03.696 --> 00:09:06.653 activities in the Grand Cane, and this is really important. Harvey's also 00:09:06.686 --> 00:09:12.153 , um, one of the first kind of recreational or casual explorers of the 00:09:12.186 --> 00:09:15.592 Grand Kane. He's taking advantage of the math of sevens map. Justus 00:09:15.625 --> 00:09:19.133 Walcott was predicting and he's going to go out, and he's going to explore 00:09:19.166 --> 00:09:23.173 beyond just those corridor trails and roots. And so Harvey matters because 00:09:23.206 --> 00:09:29.112 , um, he's in this first generation of thes, um, relatively, uh, I don't 00:09:29.145 --> 00:09:33.053 know, like casual recreational explorers, but they're not being directed 00:09:33.086 --> 00:09:37.832 like Washburn was there not being funded by, like Washburn was or, um, 00:09:37.865 --> 00:09:41.482 Powell or any of the other early explorers. Birdseye. These are people 00:09:41.515 --> 00:09:44.952 that are going out there and exploring for their own personal enjoyment. 00:09:44.985 --> 00:09:48.322 And one of the things that Harvey's doing that's really important for us. 00:09:48.355 --> 00:09:52.612 All of us here, actually, is that he's documenting all of his activities 00:09:52.645 --> 00:09:56.212 in the Grand Cane, so it's super super important. 00:09:56.245 --> 00:10:00.502 But Harvey is a mathematician, remember? Ah, so Harvey ends up spending forty two years 00:10:08.394 --> 00:10:11.760 exploring the grand can, and it's important to know that Harvey comes here 00:10:11.793 --> 00:10:15.900 in nineteen forty five nineteen forty six. He's taken a little bit the 00:10:15.933 --> 00:10:19.420 first ten years he's doing two or three heights a year, but after he died 00:10:19.453 --> 00:10:23.231 , he doesn't start really hiking vigorously and with great verve and gusto 00:10:23.264 --> 00:10:27.620 until the late nineteen fifties. So Harvey's fifty years old. When he 00:10:27.653 --> 00:10:31.741 starts all this stuff, he ends up spending forty two years exploring the 00:10:31.774 --> 00:10:37.101 Grand Canyon. In those forty two years he hikes twelve a thousand miles 00:10:37.134 --> 00:10:42.081 that's halfway around circumference of the earth. He spent over one 00:10:42.114 --> 00:10:46.380 thousand days below the rim, discovered one hundred and sixty four routes 00:10:46.413 --> 00:10:51.040 through the Red wall. Limestone also discovered one hundred sixteen rim to 00:10:51.073 --> 00:10:54.780 river routes, climbed eighty three buttes and temples, twenty eight being 00:10:54.813 --> 00:10:58.760 first the sense. And over the course of a seventeen year period, Harvey 00:10:58.793 --> 00:11:03.410 becomes the first person documented to do it, UM, height from one end to 00:11:03.443 --> 00:11:11.443 the Grand Canyon to the other end. 00:11:11.663 --> 00:11:15.510 All right. So Harvey's early influences toward Jordan James There's the 00:11:15.543 --> 00:11:19.691 cover of the book in and around the Grand Canyon. Uh, George Morton James 00:11:19.724 --> 00:11:23.181 lists about fifteen heights in that Grand Canyon. When you look at 00:11:23.214 --> 00:11:27.821 Harvey's logs and line up those early hikes against the index of the hikes 00:11:27.854 --> 00:11:32.290 that George Warden James, um, identify CE in his book, the similarities 00:11:32.323 --> 00:11:36.491 pretty uncanny. Um, he's definitely looking at this book. The second book 00:11:36.524 --> 00:11:40.111 in the Middle of Slide. There is kind of a compilation of articles in 00:11:40.144 --> 00:11:44.611 chapters written by, uh, various people, one of whom is Eddie McKee. So 00:11:44.644 --> 00:11:48.741 Inverted Mountains was really important text for Harvey, and he was really 00:11:48.774 --> 00:11:53.471 focused on Eddie's Eddie McKee's chapters because that he was strictly 00:11:53.504 --> 00:11:57.441 talking about the Grand Canyon. And then I met third pieces of map 00:11:57.474 --> 00:12:02.451 fragment, and that is the upper right hand corner of Harvey Butters Mathis. 00:12:02.484 --> 00:12:05.862 Seven Seas Top West, half maps and I don't know if you guys can read it, 00:12:05.895 --> 00:12:11.692 but it says I think the quote is red. Lines are roots in complete of 00:12:11.725 --> 00:12:16.033 Merrill clubs. Merrill Club was another faculty member knotted Arizona 00:12:16.066 --> 00:12:19.582 State College. But at the University of Kansas he taught medieval 00:12:19.615 --> 00:12:22.832 literature there, and in summer times, Merrill Club would come out to the 00:12:22.865 --> 00:12:26.612 Grand Canyon and encamp himself on the North Rim and do some of the most 00:12:26.645 --> 00:12:31.362 obscure, rugged routes off the North ramp. Early early. Who's about ten 00:12:31.395 --> 00:12:36.293 fifteen years? Harvey Senior. So he was out about exploring, I think the 00:12:36.326 --> 00:12:40.462 similarities between Merrill Club and, um Harvey. But sure we're not lost. 00:12:40.495 --> 00:12:44.063 Son Harvey and Harvey. We can see right here that Harvey is a competitive 00:12:44.096 --> 00:12:50.413 soul as well as, ah, a mathematician. I think he's trying to, um, with 00:12:50.446 --> 00:12:54.563 this little quote, I think he's trying to, um, achieve exactly what 00:12:54.596 --> 00:12:58.852 Merrill clubbed it and then outdo Meryl Club that definitely Meryl's one 00:12:58.885 --> 00:13:01.403 of his early influences. 00:13:01.436 --> 00:13:04.653 Okay, so here's Harvey's map. Sea separates have map with twelve thousand miles worth of 00:13:09.725 --> 00:13:15.362 lines on that map, and each line is a story. Each line has a history. Um, but the cool thing is that they had a little copyright notice and 00:13:44.125 --> 00:13:47.433 say, Hey, this object, maybe cooperated like That's awesome. And so they go, and they 00:14:16.020 --> 00:14:19.788 try to replicate some of Harvey's Sykes and inevitably, thes people get 00:14:19.821 --> 00:14:24.717 lost or stuck wherever they are in the National Park Service has to go 00:14:24.750 --> 00:14:28.877 rescue. Um, Tom Myers shared at this imposing me share to 00:14:47.081 --> 00:14:49.947 film clips. He also shared them with me so I could share them with you 00:14:49.980 --> 00:14:54.487 down here. This first film clip is a film clip taken by a guy named Ron 00:14:54.520 --> 00:14:58.867 Mitchell. And Ron Mitchell was a hiker in the Grand Kane seventies in the 00:14:58.900 --> 00:15:02.237 eighties, and he brought down one of those Super eight cameras and he has 00:15:02.270 --> 00:15:06.258 taken film footage. And this is the on ly known film footage of Harvey 00:15:06.291 --> 00:15:14.291 hiking in the Grand Cane. Harvey's moving pretty fast. All right. So the maps are amazing documents in themselves or 00:16:04.740 --> 00:16:10.414 artifacts. But complimenting these maps are true, really important pieces 00:16:10.447 --> 00:16:14.434 of documentation. The first, his Harvey's logs, as I mentioned a moment 00:16:14.467 --> 00:16:18.835 ago like Harvey, was just kind of dabbling in Grand Kane hiking for the 00:16:18.868 --> 00:16:22.725 first ten years. Well, is in Flagstaff area. It's not until a little bit 00:16:22.758 --> 00:16:26.955 later that he starts to really get into it. And so he starts keeping 00:16:26.988 --> 00:16:31.444 pretty serious logs. Or, I should say, starts keeping fairly detailed logs 00:16:31.477 --> 00:16:35.125 in the late nineteen fifties. And this is, I think, Page six of the 00:16:35.158 --> 00:16:40.475 earliest logs and of highlighted two passages here on this page one to 00:16:40.508 --> 00:16:45.414 show that he's, uh, this first highlighted passage on the top is actually 00:16:45.447 --> 00:16:49.005 Harvey trying to do a hike out of the George Morton James in and around 00:16:49.038 --> 00:16:51.865 the Grand Canyon book. It's the Hope Salt Trail. He's going down there. 00:16:51.898 --> 00:16:55.705 He'd gotten some information from another guy named Dr Marston. He doesn't 00:16:55.738 --> 00:16:59.644 trust stocks information, and so Harvey decides to go out on his own and 00:16:59.677 --> 00:17:04.024 inevitably does not find the cave that he was looking for. It's not until 00:17:04.057 --> 00:17:06.864 two months later, on the next page, we learned that he goes down again 00:17:06.897 --> 00:17:10.294 with Alan.
