Ngor Nuer Region: Bahr al Ghazal Age: 26 I am from Awet. When I was ten years old, rebels attacked my village. They killed people in Southern Sudan. When my village was attacked, I took a train from Awet to Khartoum. It took three days. I went to Khartoum because it was close and I knew I would have a chance to go to Egypt. It took me two days to travel by boat on the river Nile to get to Cairo. In Egypt, I did general labor for eight years. I lived in an apartment with some other Sudanese guys from Khartoum. I had a good lifestyle in Sudan, but everything fell apart after the war. My family was pulled apart. I lost contact with my parents, two sisters, and two brothers. I am the youngest of the five. I arrived in Phoenix, from Cairo, on June 7, 2006. I work at Laundry America. I sort clothing before they are washed and put them in the machines. I like to play basketball, dominoes, and “Fourteen,” which is a card game. I am good at dominoes. The thing I like best about America is the opportunity to go to school one day and get an education. I completed high school in Arabic in Egypt. I can speak Arabic, Dinka, and a little bit of English. I want to go to the community college but I don’t know what I want to study. Right now, Joseph is tutoring me in English. Someday I would like to become a doctor.
