Fnrrrs Prpr Oncaru The Fritts pipe organ is a thoroughly modern instrument that is strongly influenced by historic practice. Installed in 1,992 by Fritts & Co., its mechanical (tracker) key action makes possible the most intimate contact between player and instrument. Except for a few hardware items, the Fritts is virtually hand crafted, representing some 13,000 hours of individual labor. Each of its 1,900 pipes was made in the Fritts shop in Tacoma, \Tashington, by casting the metal, forming sheets, hammering and cutting the metal, and finally forming the pipes, the same method employed many hundred of years ago. JudyFritts, sister of the builder, Paul Fritts, executed the rich carvings, which so beautifully ornament the organ case. These were first carved in basswood, then enameled and finally gilded with Z4Kgold leaf. The result is an organ case that closely resembles antique organs of northern Europe. The organ is housed in the Organ Hall, a room that was designed specifically for the Fritts pipe organ. Such details as the wood barrel-vault ceiling, masonry walls, Iack of sound-absorbent materials and the high, rectangular shape of the room are direct influences from the typical churches in which the old organs sounded. Mathematical Music Number in the Conception of Bach's Organ Music Feb. 22,2:30 p.m., Organ Hall $14 General, $12 Seniors, Faculty & Stafl $5 Students; 480-965-6447 Throughout time, composers have exploited the correspondence between music and math. The musical intervals are concrete representations of mathematical ratios, and proportions have been used to create compelling musical structures. In this fascinating program, Kimberly Marshall, the Patricia and Leonard Goldman Professor of Organ, shows the ways in which Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque composers incorporated number symbolism in their organ music. Emphasis will be placed on Bach's chorale settings and contrapuntal works. Bach and the North German Thadition March 7, 2:30 p.m., Organ Hall $14 General, $12 Seniors, Faculry & Staff, $5 Students; 480-965-6447 The series ends with a grand finale: Swedish virtuoso Hans Davidsson, Professor of Organ at the Eastman School of Music, will perform music of the North German School, which greatly influenced Bach's writing for the organ. He is an expert on this music and was the driving force behind one of the most spectacular organ building projects of the last century, which was devoted to rendering anew the music of Scheidemann, Praetorius and Buxtehude. Davidsson has designed a riveting program to capture the distinctive German sounds of the Fritts organ.
