His teacher was Wim van Beek. He obtained his Master degree Summa Cum Laude. He also studied piano, harpsichord and trombone at the same institute. After getting lessons from Gustav Leonhardt he took part in several master classes. In 1978 he got the first degree in Church music and choir conducting. In 1979 he obtained the Prix d’ Excellence, the highest music award in The Netherlands at the time. In 1980 he won the Choral award on the famous Hinsz-organ in Bolsward at the National Improvisation Competition. In 1986 he was decorated on the occasion of the international Harpsichord Competition in Brugge. Stef Tuinstra performed several years as a choir and orchestra conductor. Tuinstra is an organist of the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen (a classical organ with 3 manuals, 1831), and of the Jacobuskerk in Zeerijp (a reconstructed 2-manual organ in meantone temperament, 1651). He is considered as a specialist of improvisations in historical styles from the Renaissance to the 21st century. He is also a soloist and continuo player in some orchestras. Currently Tuinstra is an experienced international organ adviser. In cooperation with the Government Department for the Care of Cultural Heritage and the Organ Committee of the Protestant Churches in The Netherlands he is involved in the restoration and construction of organs in the Netherlands. He and others are responsible for the preservation of Dutch organs. In that capacity he has advised over 50 projects to date. Stef Tuinstra is the leader of the North-Dutch-Organ Academy (NNOA) and teaches organ, harpsichord, piano, church music, improvisation, accompaniment of congregational singing and organ-building. He also develops experiential activities in the north of The Netherlands as well. The extraordinary quality of the many historic organs in the area, especially in the province of Groningen, and their well-organized exploitation offer attractive possibilities for these activities.
