CAROLYN HUEBL, VIOLIN FELIX WANG, CELLO AMY DORFMAN, PIANO KATZIN CONCERT HALL Tuesday, January 17, 2005 • 7:30 p.m. Violinist Carolyn Huebl is sought after as a soloist, chamber musician, bl is currently Assistant Professor of Violin at the Blair and teacher. Ms School of Music ... Vanderbilt University. In 2002, she formed the Blakemore Trio with pianist Amy Dorfman and cellist Felix Wang. Before coming to Nashville, Ms. Huebl lived in Pittsburgh where she was Assistant Professor of Violin at Carnegie Mellon University and Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. During her tenure with the PSO, she toured Japan and Europe. She is currently Co-concertmaster of the IRIS Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Michael Stern. While still in high school, Ms. Huebl was featured as soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Since then she has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras and in recital throughout the United States as well as in Argentina and Canada. Last season she was featured as soloist with the IRIS Chamber Orchestra and the Dearborn Symphony. Highlights of this season include performances with the Blakemore Trio at Arizona State University and on the Boise Chamber Music Series. Ms. Huebl has performed at many festivals and chamber music series in North America including the "Strings in the Mountains" Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the Bach Aria Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, and the Sarasota Music Festival. Her performance of the Brahms Sonata in G Major at Tanglewood was chosen for broadcast on the BBC in Europe. Her interest in contemporary music has led to the commission of several new works. This season alone includes performances of chamber music by Bolcom, Kurek, Osterfield, and Schnittke. Her performances have been featured on NPR and she has recorded for Naxos records. During the summer Ms. Huebl is on the faculty of the Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory in Colorado. She has also taught at the National Music Camp at Interlochen, and the Killington Music Festival in Vermont. She has presented master classes at Arizona State University, the Hartt School of Music, Michigan State University, Southwest Missouri State University, and the University of South Florida. She was a featured clinician at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's 2000 Conference. In the summer of 1999, Ms. Huebl presented a two-week seminar for violin students in Cordoba, Argentina, where she also performed a recital and as soloist with orchestra. Ms. Huebl earned her Bachelor and Master of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Michigan. Her teachers have included Andres Cardenes, Paul Kantor, and Donald Weilerstein. In addition to being a founding member of the Blakemore Trio, Felix Wang is the cellist of the Blair String Quartet and Assistant Professor of Cello at Vanderbilt University. Mr. Wang is also the co-principal cellist of the Iris Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Michael Stern. He has performed throughout the United States and Canada as a chamber musician, soloist, and in recital. Engagements this season include performances in Iowa City, Memphis, Nashville, Omaha, Orlando, Tampa, and Music Mountain in Connecticut. Garth New He has been the winner of several competitions, including the National Society of Arts and Letters Cello Competition, where he appeared with the Phoenix Symphony. Judges included Mstislav Rostropovich, Raya Garbousova and Laszlo Varga. He has been heard on NPR stations across the country and has recorded for the Naxos label. Also in demand as a teacher, he has been on faculty at several festivals, including the Banff Centre Youth Arts Festival, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory in Colorado and the Killington Music Festival in Vermont. Since arriving at Vanderbilt University in 1999, his students have gone on to undergraduate and graduate programs at such institutions as The Cleveland Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, The New England Conservatory of Music, The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and the University of Michigan. Mr. Wang was also a recipient of the prestigious Frank Huntington Beebe Grant for study abroad, using it to study in London with William Pleeth. Felix Wang received a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan, a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Conservatory. His teachers have included Erling Blondal Bengtsson, Laurence Lesser, Stephen Kates, Jeffrey Solow and Louis Potter, Jr. Pianist Amy Dorfman has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and in Europe. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Ms. Dorfman attended Indiana University's School of Music, where she studied with Alfonso Montecino and James Tocco. Other teachers and coaches have included Rosalyn Tureck, Menachem Pressler, Josef Gingold, Janos Starker, and Pierre Fournier. As a guest artist, she has performed at the Sedona Music Festival and in chamber recitals at Carnegie Recital HalI,CAMI Hall, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Ms.Dorfman has joined the Blair String Quartet in programs at the Music Mountain Chamber Series in Connecticut. For over twenty years, Dorfman has collaborated with the great American bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer performing in such series as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in Alice Tully Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, as well as on NPR's St. Paul Sunday Morning and The Lonesome Pine Special. In 2002, Dorfman joined colleagues Carolyn Huebl and Felix Wang to establish the Blakemore Trio. In addition to their concerts at home in Nashville, the trio has appeared in chamber music series around the country. Since 1990, Amy has been a member of the Dorfman/Katahn Piano Duo with Enid Katahn. The Duo has appeared with the Nashville Symphony and has presented recital programs nationally. She has received several awards for her playing, including the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission and first prize in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. She is currently Associate Professor of Piano at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University.
