Read more Cybersecurity camp wrap-up Our CompuGirls Hawai'i spring camp came to a close this last Saturday after nine weeks of lessons focused on encryption, coding, cybersecurity, and digital citizenship. We had over 80 girls attend throughout the course and were introduced to several guest speakers who gave them insight into the world and profession of cybersecurity and other viable STEM fields. We were delighted to have so many wonderful participants and are looking forward to working with these girls again in our summer program coming up in June. CompuGirls Hawaii Summer Camp In collaboration with ASU Prep Digital, the team is offering a free computer programming course in the month of June for Hawaii girls that were enrolled in our spring Cybersecurity program. Girls in Tech Summer Program 30 girls (ages 13-18) from throughout Hawaiʻi will advance their abilities to problemsolve and manipulate technology as a tool to create opportunities that support our communities’ environmental, educational, social, health, and cultural well-being. View more here. Coding for Change The Digital Culture Summer Institute at ASU has received grant support to offer two free classes for 6th–9th graders in June. This is an excellent opportunity for girls to get involved in STEM! Learn more on our blog! CompuGirls fact sheet The CompuGirls program was developed by CGEST Founding Executive Director Dr. Kimberly Scott. The culturally relevant practices and principles of the CompuGirls program have been the foundation for many of the programs CGEST offers, including CompuPower. Our latest fact sheet highlights the theories and successes of the CompuGirl program throughout the years. View it here. 10 Year Plan After our conference we gathered information to keep the inspiration flowing and coalition building. As we are creating our 10 year plan we want to keep gathering feedback from everyone's unique perspectives and set of experiences in this work. Share your thoughts Research updates Building collaborative networks to support women of color in userexperience and technology design. Dr. Laura Gonzales walks us through her team's longitudinal ethnographic study leveraging linguistic and cultural skills in designing tools and technologies for communities. They focused on combining language and UX design as critical pathways for increasing engagement and for highlighting the strengths of humanities researchers and their potential to positively influence technology. She has been absolutely instrumental in the CompuGirls Hawaii program especially with writing curriculum, facilitating professional development sessions with the Mentor Teachers, assisting our students with learning all the fun and interesting new technologies that there is to offer, and all while conducting research to advance women and girls of color in technology.
