Dr. Scott Featured in Phoenix
Herstories
Executive Director Kimberly Scott was interviewed by Phoenix
Herstories, a collaboration from the Phoenix Arts and Culture
Commission and the Phoenix Women’s Commission. This year,
Phoenix Herstories celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the 19th
amendment, which granted women the right to vote. In the
interview, Dr. Scott discusses her drive to serve her community.
CGEST congratulates all the accomplished women in the Phoenix

Drs. Tao and Scott Publish Research
on Technological Engagement in
African American Adolescents
Drs. Tao, Scott, and McCarthy recently published “Do African
American male and female adolescents differ in technological
engagement?: The effects of parental encouragement and
adolescents’ technological confidence” in a 2020 issue of Sex
Roles . The study highlights that African American adolescents had
less experience and interest in technical activities than with
creative activities, especially among female adolescents.

Dr. Tara Nkrumah, Lydia McInnes, and Dr. Kimberly Scott have a
manuscript in progress entitled, “Mentoring in STEM Higher
Education: A synthesis of the literature to (re)present the excluded
women of color.”

Program Updates
Pilot Launch of AISL

The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona participated in a three-week
camp in October 2020 through our NSF-funded project "Advanced
Informal STEM Learning" working with a socially programmable
robot.

We recently spoke with Cecilia Fernandez, a postdoctoral research
fellow for the University of Michigan School of Information, about
the Learning in Libraries Grant and how it has supported her
program.

CompuGirls CyberSecurity Camp
CGEST is excited to announce the success of the 2020
CompuGirls-Hawai’i launched on October 17th, 2020. Through the
collaboration between CGEST, the University of Hawai’i, and many
other partners, a virtual camp was created and implemented.

Building a Systems Map of Gender
Inequity in STEM
Over the past several weeks, CGEST has partnered with the
Hawai’i Leadership Forum to build a systems map of gender and
race inequity in STEM fields.

Elaine Arrieta

Theresa Maloney

Elaine Arrieta is originally from
Arizona. She earned her BA in
psychology from ASU,
returning for her postbaccalaureate studies in
secondary education. She
began her career in behavioral
health working at a residential
treatment center for women
and girls, discovering
her passion for education. For
18 years, Elaine enjoyed the
roles of a classroom math
teacher, administrator, and
academic coach/mentor.
Wanting to do more to affect
change on a larger scale,
Elaine moved out of the
classroom and
onto managing educational
impact programs. Elaine is
excited to be a part of the
CGEST team and is dedicated
to supporting culturally
responsive programs in STEM!

With 10 years of project
management experience,
Theresa is a process-oriented,
deadline-driven individual.
Working with clients and
partners in the higher
education, automotive, and
food and beverage industries,
Theresa has gained a wealth
of knowledge and experience
in fast-paced environments
with high expectations and the
need for ample organization. A
stickler for process and
procedures, Theresa rises to
any challenge set in front of
her and is motivated by the
success of the clients and
partners she works with.

Fall 2020 Barrett Fellows
CGEST is excited to announce our Fall 2020 Barrett Research
Fellows! Each semester, Barrett, the Honors College and the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) collaborate to pair
honors students who are interested in research with CLAS
research centers. During a semester- or year-long fellowship, the
honors students support the research of their center and
participate in an honors class to document their experience. Meet
our Barrett Research Volunteers below!

Xuan Nguyen

Rachel Spencer

Xuan (Emily) Nguyen is a
second-year undergraduate
and future pre-medicine
student studying Biological
Sciences. She is interested in
global/public health, health
disparities, and gender
inequality. She cares deeply
about bridging the pay
gap between men and women
in the healthcare industry. She
is eager to support
CGEST's mission in
encouraging young girls and
women of color to pursue
STEM. Xuan is passionate
about learning the roots of
intersectionality as well as
proposing potential solutions,
so we can all understand each
other more and rise together.

Rachel is a fourth-year
undergraduate student
studying Supply Chain
Management. Additionally, she
is pursuing a certificate in
Cross-Sector Leadership with
the Next Generation Service
Corps and a minor in
Economics through the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
She is excited to join the
CGEST as a Barrett College
Fellow to support its mission to
build better opportunities and a
better future for girls of color in
STEM. Rachel is passionate
about providing solutions to
gender inequity in professional
environments, and she looks
forward to learning from the
Center’s intersectional
approach.

Ruby Ramirez
Ruby is a Mathematics major
interested in mathematical
modeling. She looks forward to
interning at CGEST as it provides
an exciting opportunity to
advocate for women of color in
STEM.

Kids' Corner

Happy holidays, family! This year has been one for the history
books. Our children will tell stories about their 2020 experience
until old age. With much more family time on our hands, CGEST
wanted to share some apps that can help justify that increased
screen time for you and the kids.
