WALT NIELSEN CLARINET GAIL NOVAK PIANO ASSISTED BY: MATT COLEMAN, PERCUSSION GRADUATE RECITAL SERIES KATZIN CONCERT HALL SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2007 • 2:30 PM MUSIC 4.1erberEerColleu ‘-'of Fine Arts ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Program - Program Note Three Pieces for Clarinet Alone Pieces I and II were written in 1972. Piece III was finished in early 2007. Piece I features wide leaps, somewhat uncharacteristic of "traditional" clarinet music. Piece II emphasizes an "upper neighbor" motive, but it occasionally recalls the wide leaps of Piece I. Piece III is . . . well, different. Clarinet techniques have evolved a lot since 1972. It features a number of contemporary clarinet techniques, including multiphonics (producing several tones simultaneously through unconventional fingerings); singing and growling while playing; timbre trills (rapidly varying timbre rather than pitch); quarter tones (playing pitches in between the "normal" pitches); "scooping" notes; and flutter-tonguing. Aside from these techniques, Piece III features a rising four-note scalar motive (C#-DE-F#). Three Pieces for Clarinet Alone* I. Angularly II. Smoothly III.
