Mr. Smith served as Resident Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra (a.k.a. Minneapolis Symphony) for 17 years, during which time he conducted over I 000 concerts. For 16 years he was Music Director of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen. Maestro Smith is also ·Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University and is completing his tenure as Music Director and Conductor of the South Dakota Symphony. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Detroit Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Dallas and Kansas City Symphonies, and other fine orchestras. As a member of the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble, he won the Grammy in 1969 for best "Album of the Year, Classical". KATIE MCLIN Katie McLin, Assistant Professor of Violin at the Arizona State University School of Music, received her doctorate in violin performance from the University of Michigan as a student of Paul Kantor. She holds performance degrees from Indiana University and the Oberlin College Conservatory, and was an orchestral fellowship recipient for three summers at the Aspen Music Festival. Her former teachers include Franco Gulli, Josef Gingold, and Kathleen Winkler. Leading an active and varied musical life, Dr. McLin has appeared as soloist with numerous ensembles, including the Oregon Symphony, Cascade Festival Orchestra, and Salem Chamber Orchestra. A member of the McLin/Campbell Duo, she performs extensively on recital series throughout the U.S., as well as concerts in the Southwest as violinist for the Katzin Chamber Players and Papago Chamber Ensemble. As a past member of the Alorian String Quartet, Dr. McLin has recorded two compact discs under the Opus One label and has performed on Bob Sherman's "Listening Room" program, broadcast live on NY C's WQXR. A champion of twentieth-century music, Dr. McLin was a soloist and member of the Contemporary Directions Ensemble at the University of Michigan, and has collaborated with numerous composers such as Henryk Gorecki and William Albright. In addition, ~ Dr. Mc Lin has served as concertmaster of the Michigan Sinfonietta and the Aspen Sinfonia Orchestra, whose performances have been broadcast nationally on NPR. She has also been a member of the Michigan Opera Theatre, Ann Arbor, and Flint Symphony Orchestras. MARTIN SCHURING ' Martin Schuring, Assistant Professor of Oboe, joined the faculty of Arizona State University in 1992. Mr. Schuring studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with John de Lancie. He has held positions with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra and The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. Since 1980, Schuring has been a regular participant atthe Grand Teton Music Festival, playing English Hom and oboe in the Festival Orchestra as well as making frequent appearances on the Festival's chamber music series. In other summer activities, he h11s participated in the Bach Aria Festival, served as Professor of Oboe at the 1996 Londrina Music Festival in Brazil, and performed as Principal Oboe of the Orchestre Philharmonique Rhodanien and Professor of Oboe at the Academ ie Europeenne de Musique in Toumonsur-Rhone, France. Schuring has recorded for Philips, Koch International, and Summit Records, both as soloist and as an orchestra player. Recently, he recorded the world premiere of the Oboe Concerto by Eric Funk with the Prague Radio Symphony on the MMC label. Martin Schuring hosted the 1998 Conference of the International Double Reed Society at Arizona State University, June 2-6, 1998.
