In attempts to reduce nosocomial infections, the focus of PPE is shifted to include patient protection.

This innovation project will help lead the healthcare organization to better health deliver and better service because it will prevent transmission of
nosocomial infections between patients via hospital staff. Patients with HAI’s tend to have a longer duration hospital stay as well as more costs (Sheng, et
al., 2005). Likewise, current healthcare reform restricts reimbursements for treatments associated with nosocomial infections. By minimizing these costly
infections, the healthcare organization will be able to realize a greater profit.

This project is important to me because I have seen first-hand the devastating effects of preventable HAI’s. As a microbiologist, I identify HAI’s and
MDRO’s on a daily basis in patients who are simply trying to recover from an illness. There are other countries that have been able to conquer this
problem and I believe we can do it too in the United States, but some important changes are needed to make that happen- specifically placing patients
on a pro-active contact precaution to prevent transmission of pathogens. I believe HAI’s are preventable but I recognize how convoluted prevention isfrom disinfectants to antibiotic use, patient decontamination processes and employee monitoring for colonization. This project focuses on a crucial aspect
of prevention- proactively creating a barrier to reduce fomite transmission of pathogens between patients via hospital staff. There is potential for
continuous growth and expansion of this program, incorporating the many practices that have been proven to be effective against HAI’s. I believe this
project can help the hospital once again become a place where people can go to recover safely from illnesses, not contract an illness which leads to
further complications or even death.

Complimentary Strategy
Complimentary strategies are needed for the IT strategy to be successful, however, they do not necessarily have to involve IT (Glaser & Salzberg, 2011).
In this case, an aspect of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 can be applied, which is the formation of an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). ACO"s
strive to provide high quality care at the least possible cost by improving clinical performance, customer service and avoiding repetitive services and
fragmented care (Nowicki, 2011). Implementing this IT strategy during the healthcare reform could prove to be financially beneficial as there are
incentives to becoming an ACO.

Data
In order to implement this strategy, a database would need to be comprised consisting of HAI’s and current medical evidence
connecting certain demographics with HAI’s. Once data is collected, the information can be connected to patient demographics. If
certain rules apply, then a ‘trigger’ for at-risk HAI would flag the medical staff to use interventions and practices that can help reduce
risk of HAI in this patient or help prevent transmission of HAI’s. For instance, if a patient has a condition associated with
immunosuppression (diabetes, chemotherapy, post-anesthesia) or perhaps tube placement duration or incidence (multiple IV catheters,
urinary catheters, or endotracheal tubes, etc), then certain rules would apply for managing care with an emphasis on infection
prevention.

how to measure and interpret the measures, as well as monitoring care through measures (Dlugacz, 2006).
