A wealthy Viennese gentleman has commissioned two entertainments, a serious opera and a Commedia dell'Arte troupe, for his evening's festivities. But, most importantly, the fireworks must occur at 9 pm. Dinner runs late, so he decrees that both entertainments must be performed simultaneously. So, the serious opera based on the Greek legend of Bacchus and Ariadne is performed while the comedy group satirizes the action.
