As a single movement work, it is comprised of an overall palindrome structure: A B C B 1 A l . The outer A sections contain the most rhythmic and melodic vitality while the calmer B sections surround the more intimate center with its highlighting of the soloists. The composition is his exploration of how music, like all art forms, can be used to bring concrete expression to one's sense of life. In light of this, Music for Strings is an attempt to bring expression to his own sense of gratitude towards both of life's vigorous and intimate moments. Mark would like to thank Dr. Rockmaker and Dr. DeMars for their invaluable input into this composition as he composed it under their teaching guidance, along with the additional input of Dr. Rogers. Mark would also like to thank his family and friends for their years of influence, and especially for his wife's constant inspiration and support. Thank you. Jacob Harrison is an active conductor and teacher in the Phoenix area. He was recently appointed music director and conductor of the North Valley Chamber Orchestra in Paradise Valley and has begun his first season of working with this outstanding ensemble. Mr. Harrison has also worked regularly with other orchestras in the valley such as the Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra, the Scottsdale Community College Chamber Orchestra, and the Summer Sight Reading Orchestra. A passionate supporter of composers and the arts of our time, Mr. Harrison has conducted numerous works by young composers. In addition, he will be a part of the Phoenix Experimental Arts Festival, X-Fest, in 2008 and is a guest conductor for the Arizona Contemporary Music Ensemble. Jacob Harrison currently studies orchestral conducting with Dr. Timothy Russell and opera conducting with Dr. William Reber while pursuing a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting at Arizona State University. He is a conductor of Sinfonietta and an assistant conductor for the ASU orchestra program. While attending ASU, he has received numerous awards including being named as a Regent's Scholar, an Artsbridge Scholar and a Special Talent Scholar. Before moving to Arizona, Mr. Harrison lived in Chicago where he worked with groups such as the Peoria Youth Orchestra, the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra, the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and the Mason Youth Orchestra in Michigan. He has also worked with the Poston Junior High Orchestra Program in Mesa and the Highland High School Orchestra Program in Gilbert. Biographies Biographies Brandon Stephen Matthews is pursuing a doctoral degree in orchestral conducting at Arizona State University, studying with Dr. Timothy Russell. He is currently a conductor of the ASU Sinfonietta, and an assistant conductor for the ASU Orchestra program. Matthews received a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting at Brigham Young University under the direction of Kory Katseanes. During his time at BYU, Matthews conducted the University Orchestra and BYU Strings and was assistant conductor of both the BYU Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras. He also led the world premiere of Dr. Murray Boren's The Joseph Sonnets, directing an ensemble of BYU faculty members at the famous Assembly Hall on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Among Matthews's other conducting mentors is Harold Farberman with whom he studied at the Conductor's Institute at Bard College in New York. Matthews made his opera debut at BYU, conducting Gian Carlo Menotti's The Old Maid and the Thief as well as P. D. Q. Bach's The Stoned Guest. He also served as music director for Center Street Musical Theatre Company in Provo, Utah for the 2004-2005 season, conducting six productions including The Mikado, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and Annie Get Your Gun. Matthews continues his opera conducting studies with Dr. William Reber at ASU. Born in Spokane, Washington, Matthews started his musical training as a pianist and later began playing viola. His musical studies continued during summers spent at the Brevard Music Center (North Carolina) and the Marrowstone Festival (Washington). He received his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at BYU. Matthews now resides in Mesa with his wife, Meghan. Chamber Orchestra. She conducted a series of concerts with the Army Symphonic Orchestra and Choir in Belgrade and worked as a conducting assistant. In addition, she directed many public concerts with the amateur choir "Belgrade Madrigalists." Minov also worked with church choirs for a two-year period during her studies and conducted several highly acclaimed concerts in Serbia and abroad. Before coming to Arizona, Jana worked as a music professor at the music high-school "Mokranjac." She is currently a doctoral student in orchestral conducting at ASU, studying with Dr. Timothy Russell. She is also a conductor of the ASU Sinfonietta, and an assistant conductor for the ASU Orchestra Program. Jana Minov graduated with a degree in conducting from the Conservatory of Music in Belgrade-Serbia where she studied with Jovan Sajnoviá for six years. During her studies, Minov attended master classes and seminars with prominent conductors such as Emil Tabakov, UroK Lajovic, and Mladen Jagust. In addition to conducting, Jana is also an accomplished pianist and vocalist, having studied piano for over ten years and voice for six years. Minov's academic honors and work experience include the first prize and a special award at the International Choir Competition in Shanghai, China in July 2004. She led a series of concerts with the Nis Symphonic Orchestra as a guest conductor. Jana is the youngest conductor to conduct an opera (Mozart's Magic Flute) in the National Opera Theater in Belgrade. She also conducted stage music for many operas which were part of the standard repertoire in this prestigious opera house. Minov had the privilege of organizing, supervising, and conducting a series of performances with some of the most talented students within the Music Academy in Belgrade, who were assembled in the school's String Mark Jansen was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1981 where he began piano studies in second grade with Cecilia Whitby and continued with University of Arizona piano graduate, Angelina Ng, in his last year of high school. Following this, Mark attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa from 2000-2004 where he received a liberal arts education with a major in piano performance. While Mark studied piano under Dr. Joan Ringerwole, Dordt College afforded him the opportunity to perform his piano composition, Prelude, for his junior recital along with a performance of his choral work, Psalm 30, by Dordt's Concert Choir, conducted by Dr. Benjamin Kornelis. In addition, Mark received four meritorious awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his musical compositions and sound design in four drama productions. From 2004 to 2006 Mark attended Arizona State University where he completed work for his Master of Music Composition. He studied composition under Dr. James DeMars, Dr. Jody Rockmaker and Dr. Rodney Rogers. His master's thesis work, Music for Strings, was selected for the annual ASU Composition Competition to be performed this evening by the ASU Chamber Orchestra. Mark Kleine is a graduate of Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. He received his Bachelor of Music degree under the instruction of Lisa Oberlander. Mark has performed as principal clarinet with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and the Columbus State University Orchestra, as well as second clarinet with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. In 2006, he performed as soloist with the CSU Orchestra. Mark attended Le Domaine Forget Music and Dance Academy in 2005 and 2006. He has performed in master classes for Todd Palmer, Julia Heinen, Karl Leister, Marie Picard, Robert Riseling, Larry Combs, and Maurita Murphy Mead. Mark is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance and is a student of Robert Spring.
