Thank you. David Hickman, Regents Professor of trumpet, is considered to be one of the world's finest trumpet soloists. He has appeared with over 400 orchestras throughout the United States and Europe and has given workshops and master classes on over 200 major university campuses. He has served as president of the International Trumpet Guild and is founder and president of the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute and the acclaimed Summit Brass. He taught at the University of Illinois and has been a member of the Baroque Consort, Contemporary Chamber Players, and the Saint Louis Brass Quintet. He taught at the Banff (Canada) Centre for the Arts and the Korean Brass Festival. A noted clinician and author, Hickman has published 15 music texts and written over 40 articles and editions of music for the trumpet. He has released a dozen solo albums plus over 20 albums as a member of the Saint Louis Brass Quintet, Summit Brass, Baroque Consort, and the Contemporary Chamber Players. Hickman joined the ASU faculty in 1982. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist. Sam Pilafian is perhaps best known as a founding member of the internationally renowned Empire Brass Quintet. He has also recorded and performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Lionel Hampton and Pink Floyd. As a solo jazz artist, Pilafian has recorded twelve CDs. He is also a member of the large brass ensemble Summit Brass. Recently, he became a member, arranger and recording producer of the Brass Band of Battle Creek. Solo recital and concerto performances during recent seasons have taken him to Canada, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Italy, Austria, Germany and England. In 1967, Pilafian won the concerto competition at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, becoming only the second tubist in over fifty years to do so. He subsequently won fellowships at Dartmouth College and the Tanglewood Music Center. While at Tanglewood, he was invited by Leonard Bernstein to perform on-stage in the world premiere of Bemstein's MASS, which opened the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Ile is currently Professor of Music at Arizona State University, having previously served for twenty years on the faculties of Boston University and its summer Tanglewood Institute. Pilafian has won the Walter Naumberg Chamber Music Award, the Harvard Music Association Prize, the University of Miami's Distinguished Alumni Award and the annual Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Fine Arts, Arizona State University. As a past president and chairman of the board of the International Tuba Euphonium Association, Pilafian now serves on its board of directors. He is a Besson Performing Artist.
