Deater O'Neill began making her mark as a well-respected musician
and jazz singer in Washington, D.C. in 1981. The Smithsonian
Institution presented O'Neill in a concert celebrating the great female
vocalists of the swing era of the 1930's and 40's. The J.F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts appointed O'Neill, along with partner
Mike Crotty, as artists-in-residence presenting them in four concerts
in March, 1999. Other credits include performances at the first
annual Ella Firzgerald Music Festival in Newport News, Virginia, the
Jazz Times Convention in New York City, the Kool JazzFestival held
at the J.F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Corcoran
Gallery of Art jazz series, MOBIL's "Concerts at Fountain Square" in
Reston, Virginia for eight consecutive seasons, the Cherry Bloosom
Festival Ball and annual performances at D.C.'s famed jazz club,
Blues Alley for 17 years. In 1986 the Crotty & O'Neill Quintet
represented the nation's capital in performances in Bangkok, Thailand,
under the auspices of United Airlines and Sister Cities International
in the Royal Pacific Cultural Exchange. Their 1998 CD, "Turning
Point," was described by the Washington Post's Mike Joyce as
"swinging... elegant and eloquent"; her voice as "sensuous, sultry and
sensitive."

Since 1995, O'Neill has traveled throughout the nation,
presenting pops symphony orchestra concerts, including her recent
2001 New Year's Eve performance with the Mesa Symphony
Orchestra. She continues to present clinics and concerts as part of her
work in jazz education at universities and colleges, in an effort to
bridge the divide between classical and jazz vocal departments--and
her own classical vocal training and life's work as a vocalistin jazz.
