The faculty and administration are committed to the training and development of professional orchestral performers (instrumentalists and conductors), orchestral music educators and therapists, musicologists, theorists, composers. arts administrators and future arts supporters. The students share in this commitment, aspiring to the highest possible standards of musical excellence. Currently the program includes three ensembles: the University Symphony Orchestla, the Chamber Orchestra and the Sinfonietta. The Univelsity Symphony Orchestra presents many concerts on campus each year in the internationally acclaimed Gammage Center for the Performing Arts, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Soloists with the orchestra include renowned faculty performers, as well as such visiting guest artists as violinists Glenn Dicterow, Szymon Goldberg, Dylana Jenson, Ani Kavafian and Edvard Melkus; cellists Colin Calr, Stephen Kates and Lazlo Varga; pianists Ursula Oppens and Jeffrey Siegel; guitarist Manuel Lopez-Ramos; soprano Faye Robinson; the Roger Wagner Chorale; guest conductors Lukas Foss and Vincent Persichetti; and the hilarious PDQ Bach and Victor Borge. Annually, the Orchestra combines with the Universiry Choral Union to present a "Holiday Concert" to sold-out houses featuring such works as Handei's Messiah, the Vaughan Williams Hodie, Bernsteiis Chichester -Psalms and other great choral works. Outstanding student soloists, chosen through a rigorous competition on campus are presented in a "Concert of Soloists" each February. This concert also rformance of the work, which has won the annual ASU Student Composition Contest. The Orchestra has a commitment to the performance of contemporary music and has recently premiered pieces by Michael Conway Baker, Randall Shinn and Chinary features the world premiere pe Ung, and performed a concert with visiting composer Joan Tower. The Orchestra has also produced wo CD recordings, one of works by EugeneAnderson called Perceptiaz, available on d'Note Classics, and the other of works by Pulitzer Plize winner George Walker, entitled Lilacs and available on the Summit label. BIBLIOGRAPHY A native of Japan, Kayoko Dan grew up in Texas, where she received her musical training as a flutist and conductor before beginning her study at Arizona State University. In 2000, she received her Bachelor's degree in Music Studies (or Music Education) with irrstrumental emphasis from the University of Texas at Austin. Thele she studied conducting with Glenn A. Richter and flute performance with Karl F. Kraber and Jackie Hofto. At Arizona State University, Kayoko is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Music Education with an emphasis in conducting under the guidance of Dr. Timothy Russell. She is also a Teaching Asistant for the ASU Orchestra Program and a co-conductor of the ASU Sinfonietta. Nicholas Ross is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University, studying conducting with Dr. Timothy Russell, Director of Orchestras. Mr. Ross has held the position of Conducting Assistant with The Phoenix Symphony, conducting educational concerts in schools throughout the vailey. In addition to the educational series, he assisted Music Director Hermann Michael and other guest conductors. This year, Mr. Ross served as Music Dilector for the ASU Lyric Opera Theatre's production of Gian Carlo Menotti's Tbe Mec/iutn. He also served as an Assistant Conductor last year, leading performances of Mozart's Cosi fan Twtte. Mr. Ross received a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from Ithaca College. He earned a Master of Music degree in Violin Perfolmance and a New York State Teaching Certificate as a String Fellow at Sylacuse University. Prior to relocating to Arizona, Mr. Ross held the positions of Music Director of the Onondaga Civic Symphony Olchestra and Assistant Conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra. In addition, he was an Affiliate Artist at Sylacuse University in the School of Mr,rsic, where he was a private violin instructor and taught string pedagogy for five years. As a guesr conductor, Mr. Ross has appeared with the Sylacuse University Symphony Olchestra, the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, and at area al1-state and all-county festivals throughout central New York. He also has extensive public scl'rool teaching experience, having taught in three school districts in the Syracuse area. Mr. Ross maintains his performance career as a section violinist in the Glimmerglass Opera Company in Cooperstown, New York. His professional experience also included serving as Principal Second Violinist with the Utica Symphony Orchestra, as well as section positions with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the Binghamton Philharn.ronic. Mr. Ross also performs locally with the Arizona Opera Company.
