He has premiered numerous new works for orchestras and chamber ensembles. In 2007, Mr. Harrison was appointed Resident Conductor of the Chapparal Music Fest, a new music festival in Prescott, Arizona. At the festival, he premiered Kenneth LaFave's latest work for solo percussion and chamber orchestra, Canto del Alba. Pavane: La Battaille Jacob Harrison, conductor Two Lively Dance Shorts: Seis Manuel from "Islas y Montalias" Mock Morris Tielman Susato (c.1500 – c.1562) Jacob Harrison's opera conducting debut was in 2006 with the ASU Lyric Opera Theater in a semi-staged production of Bela Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. He followed this as assistant conductor with the Lyric Opera Theater's 2007 production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos. Before moving to Arizona, Mr. Harrison lived in Chicago where he worked with groups such as the Peoria Youth Orchestra, the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra, the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and the Mason Youth Orchestra in Michigan. He has also worked with the Poston Junior High Orchestra Program in Mesa and the Highland High School Orchestra Program in Gilbert. Jacob Harrison studies orchestral conducting with Dr. Timothy Russell and opera conducting with Dr. William Reber while pursuing a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting at Arizona State University. He is director of the ASU Sinfonietta Orchestra and assistant conductor for the ASU Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. .Shelley Hanson Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) Steve Martin, conductor Dance of the Jesters from The Snow Maiden After being appointed Music Director of the North Valley Chamber Orchestra in 2006, Jacob has increased the ensemble's visibility in the Valley through the development of the ensemble's programming and by reaching out to the community of North Phoenix. In addition, Mr. Harrison has worked regularly with other orchestras throughout the Phoenix area such as the Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra, the Scottsdale Community Orchestra, and the Arizona Repertory Orchestra. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Jana Minov graduated with a degree in conducting from the Conservatory of Music in Belgrade-Serbia where she studied with Jovan Sajnoviá for six years. During her studies, Minov attended master classes and seminars with prominent conductors such as Emil Tabakov, Urog Lajovic, and Mladen Jagust. In addition to conducting, Jana is also an accomplished pianist and vocalist, having studied piano for over ten years and voice for six years. Biographies Biographies Minov's academic honors and work experience include the first prize and a special award at the International Choir Competition in Shanghai, China in July 2004. She led a series of concerts with the Nis Symphonic Orchestra as a guest conductor. Jana is the youngest conductor to conduct an opera (Mozart's Magic Flute) in the National Opera Theater in Belgrade. She also conducted stage music for many operas which were part of the standard repertoire in this prestigious opera house. Minov had the privilege of organizing, supervising, and conducting a series of performances with some of the most talented students within the Music Academy in Belgrade, who were assembled in the school's String Chamber Orchestra. She conducted a series of concerts with the Army Symphonic Orchestra and Choir in Belgrade and worked as a conducting assistant. In addition, she directed many public concerts with the amateur choir "Belgrade Madrigalists." Assistant Conductor of the Orchestra of Southern Utah. While at SUU, Mr. Smart conducted the Symphony Band, brass ensemble, and athletic bands, and taught classes in advanced conducting, applied brass, and music education methods. In April of 2006, Mr. Smart conducted the SUU Wind Symphony in the world premier of Raag Mala: the music of India through Western ears by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Michael Colgrass. Mr. Smart organized the fully funded commission and composer residency. Minov also worked with church choirs for a two-year period during her studies and conducted several highly acclaimed concerts in Serbia and abroad. Before coming to Arizona, Jana worked as a music professor at the music high-school "Mokranjac." She is currently a doctoral student in orchestral conducting at ASU, studying with Dr. Timothy Russell. She is also a conductor of the ASU Sinfonietta, and an assistant conductor for the ASU Orchestra Program. Conductor James Smart has a broad repertoire in wind, orchestral, and opera works and is particularly interested in promoting new music. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music Education from Arizona State University where he is also currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting. Mr. Smart's conducting teachers include Gary Hill, William Reber, H. Robert Reynolds, Timothy Russell, Kevin Sedatole, and James Tapia. He has continued his conducting studies in workshops with Michael Gielen, William Lame Jones, Kenneth Kiesler, Craig Kirchhoff, Allan McMurray, and Franck 011u. In September of 2007, Mr. Smart was invited to attend the International Ensemble Modern Academy master classes and study under the tutelage of conductors, Michael Gielen and Franck 011u, as well as the musicians of Ensemble Modern. The experience resulted in two public performances with IEMA at the Klangspuren New Music Festival in Schwaz and Innsbruck, Austria. Before coming to ASU to pursue his doctorate, he was Director of Bands and Brass Studies at Southern Utah University and Mr. Smart taught public school in Lapeer, MI. He has conducted and/or adjudicated ensembles in Austria, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Michigan, Texas and Utah. He has also been a participant in the International Ensemble Modern Academy Masterclasses (Schwaz, Austria), Conductors Retreat at Medomak (Washington, ME), the International Workshop for Orchestral Conducting (Graz, Austria), and the Band Conductors Art Symposium (Ann Arbor, MI). He and his wife, Amy, currently live in Chandler, AZ. Steve Martin is currently pursuing the Doctorate of Musical Arts here at Arizona State University. He holds a Master of Musical Arts in Conducting from the University of Nevada, Reno and the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from California State University, Fresno. Mr. Martin taught high school in Northern California for three years and has worked as a clinician and designer for several high school and university programs across the western United States. In 2005, Mr. Martin composed and produced the entire score to the full-length, independent motion picture Compadres. He has composed and arranged for marching band, jazz band, and concert band and his music is published through Gary P. Gilroy Publications, Inc. which provides original works for marching band and custom drill design.
