The Scarecrow is an operatic adaptation of Hawthorne's tale of a living scarecrow, created out of malevolence, as he discovers love and what it means to be human and to determine his own fate. Hello, Jerry! A special engagement concert celebrating the songs and lyrics of Broadway legend Jerry Herman as performed by some of today's biggest Broadway stars. THEATRE The Lost Ones is set in a post-apocalyptic future and tells the story of two boys who have lost their childhood to war, while offering an affirmation of the resilience, optimism and generosity of the human spirit. Haroun and the Sea of Stories, a bold theatrical adaptation of Salman Rushdie's novelistic celebration of storytelling, tells the tale of a boy's love for his father, punctuated by messages about the importance of free speech and independent thought. Festival of New Work premiers four new plays by ASU graduate students with two productions, Skylark Dreams and The House Where Nobody Lives, and two staged readings. The Lost Ones runs Sept. 21, 23, 24, & 28-30; Oct.!. Haroun and the Sea of Stories runs Oct.13-15 & 19-22. Festival of New Work runs Nov. 9-19. DANCE Rhythms of Life: Drums and Dances from Africa explores African influence on Western dance with visiting artists Agbe Nunya, Axe Capoeira, Cuban Connection, Joel Valentin-Martinez and Sule Wilson. Moving Ground features guest choreographer Nora Chipaumire of the Urban Bush Women, who sets work combining the spiritual elements of traditional African and Caribbean dance with contemporary, Western dance. ORGAN An Italian baroque organ built by Domenico Traeri in 1742 joins the Fritts organ this season.The King of Instruments Meets the Instrument of Kings marks the first public performance on the Traeri organ, exploring the sounds of organ and trumpet. It Takes Two to Tango is an evening of duets showcasing the magnificent Fritts organ, with four hands and feet! The 4th Annual Organ Christmas Concert celebrates the music of Christmas in the Organ Hall, appropriately decorated for the occasion. Duo: Agitato Petr Eben Biographies Janette Fishell holds degrees in organ performance from Indiana University and Northwestern University; her teachers include Wilma Jensen, Wolfgang Rithsam, Richard Enright, Anita Werling, Robert Byrd and Clyde Holloway, Named Young Organist of the Year by Keyboard Arts, Inc. while still an undergraduate, Dr. Fishell is a recitalist and teacher of international standing. She has performed in many of the world's greatest concert venues including Suntory Hall, Tokyo; King's College, Cambridge; Berlin's Schauspielhaus; the Liszt Academy, Budapest; the Prague Spring Festival and has been a featured recitalist and lecturer at four previous national conventions and four regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists. The author of numerous articles and a book on service playing published by Abingdon Press, she is widely recognized as a leading authority on the organ music of Czech composer Petr Eben. Her numerous compact disc recordings include performances of the music of Marcel Dupre, Petr Eben and J.S. Bach as well as duet literature performed with her husband, British organist Colin Andrews. She has been featured in live radio broadcasts worldwide, including a live recital broadcast for the BBC from St. Marylebone Church, London, and for NHK, Tokyo. A frequent adjudicator, she has been tutor and artist three times at the Oundle International School for Young Organists and was a judge for the recorded round of the 2000 National Competition for Young Artists sponsored by the'American Guild of Organists. She is now Chair of the NYACOP committee. Dr. Fishell is Distinguished Professor of Music at East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., where she heads the Organ Performance and Sacred Music degree programs and is Chair of Keyboard Studies. Her students have distinguished themselves in academia and the performance stage, including first place honors in the AGO Competition for Young Organists, the MTNA National Collegiate Organ Competition and at the Oundle International Summer School for Young Organists. Her former students success-fully serve churches and serve on university faculties throughout the US and Asia. She is Founder and Artistic Director of the East Carolina Religious Arts Festival, now in its tenth year, and from 1990-2005 was Director of Music/Organist at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Greenville, NC where she oversaw a full schedule of choral services, including monthly evensong. In July, 2000 the St. Paul's choir, under her direction, sang a choral residency at Gloucester Cathedral, and two concerts in honor of the Queen Mother's one hundredth birthday, performing before an estimated audience of 12,000. In May, 2002, the choir recorded its first commercial compact disc of British, French and American sacred music, Love Bade Me Welcome: Music from St. Paul's; in critical reviews the choir's tone and blend are praised as sounding "fully professional." In 2005 she requested a shift that would allow her to focus more on playing, teaching and research, and assumed the role of Principal Organist at St. Paul's where she now presides at the church's new C. B.Fisk, Opus 126 organ. Most recent and upcoming engagements include tours of Asia, Australia, South Africa, England, Europe and many engagements as a recitalist and teacher in the United States. Among her recent engagements were performances at the AGO Regional Convention in Columbus, Georgia, a teaching and performance residency at the Oundle (England) International Organ Week, solo recitals at Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, the Goteborg (Sweden) International Organ Academy and at the Cathedral of Lausanne, Switzerland. Her most recent compact disc, the first commercial recording of Fisk, Opus 126, will be issued later this year. Since his debut at age eighteen, Colin Andrews has been recognized as a musician of great versatility, power and artistry. Born in Bristol, England, Andrews initially studied organ with Garth Benson of St. Mary Radcliffe Church. At sixteen, he entered London's Royal Academy of Music for four years of organ and piano study under principal professors Douglas Hawkridge and Margaret McDonald. He later moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he was a student of Professor Lionel Rogg. Following his return to Britain he studied privately for two years with Dame Gillian Weir. Andrews has been the recipient of many awards; most notably, he was a prizewinner at both the 1980 and 1982 Dublin International Organ Competitions in Ireland, and, in 1993, The Royal Academy of Music, London, bestowed an associateship upon him in recognition of his distinguished performing career. Andrews has toured worldwide both as a solo recitalist and in solo and ensemble concerts with his wife, American organist Janette Fishell. He has appeared at a number of the world's most prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall, London; King's College, Cambridge; Suntory Hall, Tokyo; Hong Kong Cultural Center; The Moscow Conservatoire; the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris; the National Conventions of the NZAO and the American Guild of Organists; Yale, Duke and Stanford Universities, plus leading halls and cathedrals in Taiwan, South America, Iceland, Finland, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa and most of Eastern and Western Europe. Future engagements include concert tours of Asia, Europe and numerous engagements in the US. In addition to his recitals, Andrews is an active teacher and lecturer, and has given presentations at, among other venues, the Franz Liszt Academy, Budapest; Taiwan Theological College; Pipe Organ Encounter, Pittsburgh; Oundle Summer School for Young Organists, Oundle, UK; Emory University; and at the 1998 AGO National Convention. He has recorded 20 broadcasts for the BBC and has appeared on local and national television and radio in Russia, Poland, the UK, Japan and New Zealand. Commercial compact discs are available on the Priory and Zig Zag labels. Andrews has served as a jury member for the International Organ Competition at the University of Michigan and for both the 1995 and 1997 J.P. Sweelinck Competitions, Gdansk, Poland. He has also served as a national councilor and local President of the I.A.O., UK and currently serves as Organist/Master of the Choristers at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC, USA, his country of residence. In the summer of 2004 he led the choir of St. Stephen's in their first international concert tour, conducting concerts in the cathedrals of Wells, Bristol and St. David's, UK. During the 2000/2001 academic year Andrews was Visiting Lecturer in Organ and Sacred Music at East Carolina University, fulfilling all teaching duties during his wife's leave. In the fall of 2005 he joined his wife on the East Carolina faculty when he resumed Lecturer status, teaching in the areas of Applied Organ and Organ Literature.
