ASU African Drum Ensemble
Dr. Mark Ellis Sunkett was born April 19, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA
and passed away June 26th, 2014 in Mesa, AZ. Mark grew up in
Philadelphia and receiveJ degrees from The Curtis Institute of
Music, Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh where
he earned a PhD in Ethnomusicology. As a percussionist, he
performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Ballet
and Opera Orchestras, "The President's Own" United States Marine
Band, the Phoenix Symphony, Ballet Arizona and Arizona Opera.
A member of our School of Music faculty since 1976, Dr. Sunkett
contributed greatly to our school, our community, and to his
discipline. Dr. Sunkett's areas of research were African-American
and African music, percussion practices and aesthetics. His "Drums
of Senegal" project documented the rhythms, history, and
performance practices among the various ethnic groups in Senegal,
and contributed greatly to our understanding of the rituals and
traditions of this music.
