It was an open rehearsal of the premiere, which officially took place the next day for an invited audience of the crème of Viennese society. Public performances were given nearly a year later, in March of 1799. An instant success, the work has been performed continuously since. And yet no beloved masterpiece has a more complicated history. Inspired by the music of Handel he heard during his two sojourns in London (1791–92 and 1794–95), Haydn sought to write a large-scale composition along the lines of Messiah or Israel in Egypt. The impresario Salomon presented him with an old libretto for an oratorio based on the Book of Genesis and with poetry by an unknown author who drew inspiration from Milton’s Paradise Lost. (The text was rumored to have been presented to Handel.) Haydn took it home to Vienna, where his friend Gottfried van Swieten undertook to translate the words into German. It was that German text that Haydn set to music. After the music was written, van Swieten restored the English words, making necessary adjustments in both the words and music to make Haydn’s music singable in English. From its first performances in England in 1800, the music of The Creation was profoundly admired, but the English text was much maligned. It was thought that the main problem was van Swieten’s imperfect command of the English language, but closer and more thorough examination of the text reveals that this is not, in fact, the case. Many of the “faults” in the libretto seem to stem from the now-lost English original. Our performance is based on a new edition of the work prepared especially for this concert. It restores most of the original English text, which is nuanced in ways that have perhaps been overlooked. Others have attempted to restore the English words from the first edition, but their solutions to the challenges it poses were not always vocally workable. We hope that this performance presents both the words and the music in a manner faithful to the original conception of the work. ON THE IMAGERY The media design and animation for this performance endeavors to be as multivalent, as deeply steeped in wonder and as open to perception and interpretation as the inhabitants of creation themselves. Through sensor technology, animation, videography and illustration we have created a visual tapestry with the goals of driving imagination and paying homage to the glorious beauty of our universe.
