ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY School of Music Program Notes Euphonium Concerto by Martin Ellerby Martin Ellerby is a British composer who studied composition at the London College of Music and the Royal College of Music and currently lives in Manchester. Steven Mead asked Ellerby to write a euphonium concerto that showcases all the technical and lyrical capabilities of the instrument at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in 1994. As a result, this concerto is one of the most difficult and best works in the euphonium repertoire. The first movement contrasts a rising augmented scale with beautiful lyrical melodies throughout the movement. Movement two is a lighthearted movement with the primary melody being major seventh arpeggios rising in minor thirds (CM7-EbM7-GbM7-BbbM7) followed by a descending major scale in fourths. One of the most beautiful melodic movements in the euphonium repertoire, the third movement is dedicated to Luis Maldanado who passed away shortly after completing the brass band scoring for the premier of the work. The final movement can be described as "5 minutes of pure, intense rhythmic drive." Set Adrift by Thomas Kelly Irish composer Thomas Kelly wrote this piece for Canadian euphonium player Carina Lam while both were studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The piece explores the idea of a person being "set adrift" in space and having no human contact, and the three sections illustrate the possible emotions that person might experience as they come to accept their fate. The first section shows the loneliness that can only come from complete isolation from everything and everyone familiar. The middle section focuses on the enjoyment and awe of seeing the majesty of the universe coupled with cries of help with the introduction of the Morse code S.O.S. rhythm. Finally the piece returns to loneliness that transforms into despair as the piece fades into the unending universe. Vibrant Colors by Chris Lamb Each movement of this new concerto is written to represent two colors of the LGBT Pride Flag and their symbolic meanings. The original LGBT Pride Flag was flown in San Francisco in 1978 with the following colors: Hot Pink (sexuality), Red (life), Orange (healing), Yellow (sunlight), Green (nature), Blue (magic/art), Indigo (serenity/harmony), Violet (Spirit). The final movement, "Black: In Memoriam," is written in memory of all the victims of the AIDS epidemic and to commemorate their battle with the disease. This piece is dedicated to Liz M. Canon and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Rainbow Alliance for H.O.P.E. for their hard work in creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all LGBTQ people within the UWO community.
