We build orchestras, bands, and choirs in lowincome neighborhoods with the vision that each child in the program will become a productive, responsible and caring citizen. Students receive 6 hours a week of instrumental music instruction and one instrument at no cost. The scholarship offering is dependent upon students and families participating in community service as a way to pay back for their participation in the program. About this Collaboration ASU Concert Band and the Harmony Project Phoenix arejoining forces to provide a unique and lifechanging opportunity to remarkable young musicians. 1 8 Harmony Project Phoenix students will be featured as soloists for the first time in collaboration with the prestigious ASU Concert Band. Concert Band is an inclusive ensemble comprised of students in varying disciplines. The pieces in this concert have been commissioned to ASU composition sfudents who took on the challenge to compose multilevel solo concertos for band and soloist. Tr:night is the world premiere of five of these works. The middle section is slower and more contemplative before returning to the original fast-paced theme. On the Edge starts with a bold statement from the ensemble. The xylophone enters subdued and gradually builds to the middle section. In the middle section, the xylophone takes turns with the ensemble melody and leads the ensemble to the climax. After the climax, the ensemble and soloist softly retum to the original idea before making a final unison statement. Eric Xu is a Chinese-American composer living in Phoenix, Arizona. When The Footlifter was written in 1929, the united States was in a major depression. At the same time, as a result of their popular concerts and radio broadcasts, the Fillmore Band was already well established as one ofthe top musical groups in Cincinnati. When the stock market crashed in 1929, many businesses in Amerioa were in serious financial trouble. However, with the popularity of the radio and the Fillmore Band's radio broadcasts, some successful businesses had learned the importance ofadvertising. It was this advertising that supported and sponsored the Fillmore Band concerts which were broadcast olVer Cincinnati station WLW, as advertisers hoped tlat the popularity of the Fillmore Band would, by association, be transferred to their products. Henry Fillmore wrote this march at the request of on of the sponsors of his popular radio program. One night, after listening to one ofthe band's broadcasts, the president ofthe company asked Fillmore to compose amarch that could be tied into the companies advertising slogan. Fillmore completed the march four days later, and when the president ofthe agency heard the new piece, he told Fillmore that it was certainly a "footlifter." That became the very appropriate name for this classic Fillmore march. 1F *ry$*ww UPCOMING EVENTS March l, 2017 ASU Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra Size Matters Jason Caslor and Gary W.
