Of the two completed movements, the first one is often performed on ihe bossoon. ln some woys, the piece seems like it wqs olwoys iniended for the bossoon since it ploys strongly lo the instrument's strengths. lt feotures mony color chonges throughout the work ond exploits the bossoon's extensive ronge. The piece is o wonderfulexomple of high Romontic composition with its long, flowing lyricol lines ond intense dromo. Glinko ond his fomily were fierce Russion notionolists ond thus did not foce the discriminqtion ond ongst thot Russion composers ore typicolly known for. This piece is somber ond oftentimes even ongry, with repeoted use of the bossoon's dorkest iimbres ond extreme ronges. Smoll islonds resting on the precipice of the 2.7-kilometer-long Porono Ploteou creote mossive cotorocts ond woterfolls thot ronge from 60-82 meters high. Woter coscodes down ond either flows into the upper or lower lguozu. The woter in lower lguozu empties into the Porono River ond the woter in upper lguozu flows into q norrow chosm colled The Devil's Throot before moking its woy into the Porono.
