Herberger Institute ~OR DESIGN AND THE ARTS ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY School of Music Thomas Stevens, composer of Variations in Olden Style, played trumpet in the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1972-2000, and in that time, he met the prolific tubist Roger Bobo. This piece "in the style of Bach" was dedicated to Bobo and helps to fill a gap in repertoire from a time period that the tuba did not exist. In 1982, Astor Piazolla, Astor Piazolla recorded Oblivion for the soundtrack of the movie Enrico IV. The New York Times described Piazolla as "the world's foremost composer of tango music." His performances of his compositions with a plethora of ensembles gave him a reputation for "singlehandedly inventing the new tango." Galacidalacidesoxyribonucleicacid is a painting by artist Salvador Dali currently in the collection of the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Struck by the painting, John was inspired to write a piece reflective of the awe-inspiring nature of the work. The museum's online archive describes the background of the piece: "The contrasting forms on the left and right sides of the painting reinforce the cyclical theme of birth/death/rebirth. On the right, the cubic structure ... is a molecule of self-annihilation. In contrast, on the left side of the canvas is a DNA molecule structure. This form contains the genetic code of life and has a double helix spiral shape. Thus, the "life" spiral contrasts with the "death" cube." From the composer: Bodacious, a title inspired by an email correspondence with James Grant, is rhythmically inspired by non-classical genres of music such as funk and rock and is meant to emulate the nimble but compact profile of an electric bass player, before setting off into seemingly dichotomous "soaring" lyrical sections where the music unfurls the singing quality of the tuba. James Barnes is an American-born composer that has taught at the University of Kansas since 1977. At the university, he met the professor of tuba, Scott Watson, for whom he composed his Concerto/or Tuba. The premiere took place in February 1997 with Watson as tuba soloist and the United States Army Band as the accompanying ensemble. Best known for his family values and ostentatious flat-top haircut, Guile is the embodiment of "American stereotype" in the video game Street Fighter 2. Perhaps due to his high rank with the United States Air Force, Guile's signature move is the Sonic Boom: a move in which he slashes his arms inwards so rapidly that the movement creates a shock wave, debilitating opponents. *Stephen Senseman is a candidate in the Master of Music program. This recital is the first of two required recitals for the degree program. A511. Herberger Institute FOR DESIGN AND THE ARTS ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY School of Music
