Carl Reinecke was born in Altona (Hamburg) and was one of the most influential personalities in
the world of late nineteenth century German music. Reinecke began as a child prodigy on the
piano. Even when adult he was admired for his abilities on the piano, by no less than Franz Liszt.
Reinecke also began to compose at an early age. He eventually produced nearly 300 opusnumbered works, including large amounts of music for the theater, symphonies, concerti
(including a flute concerto), piano music and chamber music. His early models as a composer
were Mendelssohn and Schumann, and they stayed with him long into his life. Thus to his
students at the Leipzig conservatory he appeared conservative in his taste. Reinecke's students
included the Norwegian composers Greig and Svendsen, Sullivan from Great Britain and
Albeniz from Spain. Like Schubert, Reinecke only produced one work for flute and piano, the
Undine sonata. Although it is by no means programmatic music. Reinecke tries to create an
atmosphere by referring the listener to the poem by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouque about the water
nymph who sacrifices her soul for the love of a man who eventually betrays her. This sonata,
Reinecke's most frequently-performed work, was composed in 1883 and published like all this
prolific composer's work, by the well-reputed Leipzig music publishers Breitkopf & Hartel, a
couple of years later.
