Wickenburg Weather Station Annual Hydrologic Data Report Volume III: Weather Statistics Water Year 2023 Preface This publication presents meteorological data collected by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCDMC) automated ALERT system. Forty telemetered weather stations are included in this report. Thirty-five of the stations are located within Maricopa County, three in Yavapai County, and two in Pinal County. The weather data contained in this report were collected, compiled, and edited by the FCDMC Flood Warning Branch. The information contained herein is as accurate and complete as possible within the limitations of real-time data collection technology currently available. Wherever possible, footnotes indicating periods of questionable and/or missing data have been added to the appropriate weather summaries. Although every possible means has been taken to provide accurate data, the liability for using this data falls upon the user and not the FCDMC. This report is Volume III and contains weather station statistics. On-line users of this document have additional resources available by selecting hyperlinks. Weather Station names will link to the FCDMC web page for that weather station. Other hyperlinks will link within the document. All weather stations report temperature and relative humidity; many also report a combination of wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure, and solar radiation. In addition, dewpoint temperature is calculated every 15 minutes at all weather stations using the temperature and relative humidity data. The temperature, relative humidity, and wind sensors transmit data every 15 minutes; the barometric pressure and solar radiation sensors every 30 minutes. The following paragraphs describe the arrangement, collection, and compilation of the monthly weather station data contained in this report: • Weather station data presented in the monthly weather summaries are based on the “2023 Water Year” which began on Oct. 1st, 2022, and ended Sept. 30th, 2023. Each monthly summary represents one weather station and lists daily weather station statistics by sensor. The monthly summaries are arranged chronologically and by station name. • An index of ALERT System weather stations, code names, locations, and installation dates are located on page viii. This is followed by a sensor id number matrix listing the available sensors at each weather station. Both indexes are sorted by station name in alphabetical order. Station names are hyper-linked to additional weather station information and climate summaries (where available). • The monthly weather summaries contain daily maximum, minimum, and mean values for temperature and dewpoint. The monthly summaries also contain daily maximum and minimum values for relative humidity and barometric pressure. Finally, the monthly summaries contain daily maximum peak wind and solar radiation values. All of the ALERT system weather stations record precipitation; however, that data is located in the FCDMC Hydrologic Data Report Volume I. • The unit of measurement for daily maximum, minimum, and mean temperature data is in degrees Fahrenheit (˚F). The daily maximum, minimum, and mean dewpoint data are also in degrees Fahrenheit (˚F). The daily maximum and minimum relative humidity data are in percent (%). The daily maximum peak wind data are in miles per hour (mph). The daily maximum and minimum barometric pressure are in millibars (mb). The daily maximum solar radiation data are in watts per square meter (w/m2). • All data presented in the weather summaries are rounded to the nearest whole value. Additional and/or more detailed sensor data in hard copy or electronic copy are available for the weather station sensors listed in this report. During October 2022, an active Pacific storm track interacting with available moisture led to near seasonable mean temperatures and portions of western and central Maricopa County achieving wetter than normal precipitation. The Desert Southwest region trended cooler than seasonable and much drier during November 2022. Numerous locations in south-central Arizona registered 30% or less of monthly climatological values. Despite ongoing La Niña conditions in the Equatorial Pacific that statistically lead to drier winters in Arizona, the region experienced multiple significant wetting precipitation events during the winter and early spring months, particularly during the month of March when multiple atmospheric river events were directed into southern California and portions of Arizona at times. Ultimately, historic snowpack and bouts of heavy precipitation from frequent Pacific weather disturbances in the mountains north and east necessitated the controlled and prolonged release of upstream reservoirs well into the month of May. The prevailing cool and wet weather pattern with unusually and widespread saturated soil conditions across southern and central Arizona facilitated both short-term drought relief and a suppressed wildfire season. By late April and May, stronger spring season daytime heating potential combined with anomalously high available water vapor content in the atmosphere that led to a “false” monsoon signal with convective thunderstorms developing over the higher terrain, especially when atmospheric instability was enhanced by passing low pressure troughs. Much drier, but seasonably cool, weather conditions persisted between late May and most of June. A delayed and drier monsoon circulation has been linked to abnormally wet and cool winter/spring months. This verified with a historic lack of rainfall at some observation locations in Arizona. For example, Phoenix Sky Harbor’s 0.15” of rainfall between June 15th and September 30th was the driest on record going back to 1896, while the ALERT network experienced its 2nd driest monsoon on record since 1982. The monsoon period not only lacked the usual daily thunderstorm opportunities, especially over the lower deserts, but was dangerously hot at all locations. Record heat quickly gripped the region by late June and early July and was sustained well into August and lingered at times for September. An extensive list of new daily and streak heat records was established throughout the monsoon season. Only a few severe thunderstorm outbreaks between late August and mid-September, aided by remnant tropical moisture interacting with upper-level low pressure troughing, finally offered relief from the heat and general precipitation deficit for some favored locations. More detailed weather and rainfall information on Monsoon 2023 can be found here. Table 6 below shows temperature data averaged across the entire ALERT weather station network. Values were calculated using WY2023 data. Anomalies and ranks were calculated using data for the period of record. Overall, the average temperature across all stations for WY2023 was 70.7˚F, which was 1.0˚F cooler than the long-term average of 71.7˚F. This ranked as a tie for the 6th coolest WY on record. Looking at the anomaly data (not shown), thirty-five of the weather stations were cooler than average with seven stations experiencing their coolest WY average temperature Annual Hydrologic Data Report, Volume III – Weather – 2801 W Durango St., Phoenix, AZ 85009 (602) 506-1501 Page 18 on record. Despite the cool dominant departures across the ALERT network, the Horsethief Basin site registered its warmest average temperature on record (62.1°F: +5.2 anomaly). This ranked as the second coolest WY on record (data back to WY2010). Nearly all weather stations (38 of 40) were cooler than their respective long-term average maximum temperatures with eleven stations experiencing their coolest WY on record. No new daily high temperature records were set in WY2023; however, the Horseshoe Lake site tied a previous record (see Figure 2). The average minimum temperature across all stations was 59.5˚F, which was 1.1˚F cooler than the long-term average of 60.6˚F. Water Year 2023 was tied for the third coolest on record (data back to WY2010). A majority of stations were anomalously cooler; however, six stations had an average minimum temperature above their respective long-term means. There were seven stations that set new cool WY average minimum temperatures, while only one station (Horsethief Basin) set a new warm WY record. No new daily minimum records were set during WY2023 (see Figure 3).
