Preface
This publication presents meteorological data collected by the Flood Control District of Maricopa
County (FCDMC) automated ALERT system. Forty telemetered weather stations are included in
this report. Thirty-five of the stations are located within Maricopa County, three in Yavapai
County, and two in Pinal County.
The weather data contained in this report were collected, compiled, and edited by the FCDMC
Flood Warning Branch. The information contained herein is as accurate and complete as possible
within the limitations of real-time data collection technology currently available. Wherever
possible, footnotes indicating periods of questionable and/or missing data have been added to the
appropriate weather summaries. Although every possible means has been taken to provide
accurate data, the liability for using this data falls upon the user and not the FCDMC.
This report is Volume 3 of a 3 volume suite entitled “Annual Hydrologic Data Report – Water Year

Introduction
This publication is part of a three-volume report containing hydrologic and meteorological data
collected by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County during Water Year 2022. This report is
Volume III and contains weather station statistics. On-line users of this document have additional
resources available by selecting hyperlinks. Weather Station names will link to the FCDMC web
page for that weather station. Other hyperlinks will link within the document.
All weather stations report temperature and relative humidity; many also report a combination of
wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure and solar radiation. In addition, dewpoint
temperature is calculated every 15 minutes at all weather stations using the temperature and
relative humidity data. The temperature, relative humidity, and wind sensors transmit data every
15 minutes; the barometric pressure and solar radiation sensors every 30 minutes.
The following paragraphs describe the arrangement, collection, and compilation of the monthly
weather station data contained in this report:
•

Weather station data presented in the monthly weather summaries are based on the “2022 Water
Year” which began on Oct. 1st, 2021 and ended Sept. 30th, 2022. Each monthly summary represents
one weather station and lists daily weather station statistics by sensor. The monthly summaries are
arranged chronologically and by station name.

•

An index of ALERT System weather stations, code names, locations, and installation dates is located
on page viii. This is followed by a sensor id number matrix listing the available sensors at each
weather station. Both indexes are sorted by station name in alphabetical order. Station names are
hyper-linked to additional weather station information and climate summaries (where available).

•

The monthly weather summaries contain daily maximum, minimum, and mean values for
temperature and dewpoint. The monthly summaries also contain daily maximum and minimum
values for relative humidity and barometric pressure. Finally, the monthly summaries contain daily
maximum peak wind and solar radiation values. All of the ALERT System weather stations record
precipitation; however that data is located in the FCDMC Hydrologic Data Report Volume I.

•

The unit of measurement for daily maximum, minimum, and mean temperature data is in degrees
farenheight (˚F). The daily maximum, minimum, and mean dewpoint data is also in degrees
farenheight (˚F). The daily maximum and minimum relative humidity data is in percent (%). The
daily maximum peak wind data is in miles per hour (mph). The daily maximum and minimum
barometric pressure is in millibars (mb). The daily maximum solar radiation data is in watts per
square meter (w/m2).

•

All data presented in the weather summaries areis rounded to the nearest whole value. Additional
and/or more detailed sensor data in hard copy or electronic copy are available for the weather

Brief Summary of Water Year 2022
Water Year 2022 started on the heels of the third wettest monsoon season on record for the
Phoenix area according to the ALERT network (trailing only WY 1984 and WY 2014). Furthermore,
below average tempeatures were recorded during the months of July, August, and September.
Monsoon activity quickly came to a hault near the start of September with the pattern quickly
transitioning towards fall. Mostly dry conditions and above average temperatures were observerd
durning October and November. La Niña conditions re-emerged across the Equatorial Pacfic
during the autumn months before peaking during the winter and lasting into the subsequent
spring. Drier conditions were obsevered during early winter before several wet systems brought
widespread lower desert rain and higher terrain snow in both late December and early January.
The spring season was once again highlighted by warmer than normal temperatures.
Unfortunately, precipitation events remained few and far between through most of the spring.
Drier than normal pericpitation was observed in consecutive months from January throughout
May. Given the prolonged dryness of the previous six months, short and long term drought
conditions continued to spread across most of Arizona. The state experienced another ehanced
wildfire season similar to what was observed in WY2020 and WY 2021. Several devastating
wildfires occurred across Arizona’s higher terrain regions with the focus within Coconino National
Forest. June got off to a very hot start with multiple daily heat records being broken during the first
two weeks of the month. Luckily, the onset of the summer monsoon arrived over a week early for
most of the state. Several early season storm events occurred the last two weeks in June lending to
above average precipitation for the month. Any worries of a false start to the season were quickly
laid to rest as the region experienced an incredibly active July and August with multiple
widespread rain and flooding events. When all was said and done, above to well above normal
precipitation was recorded for the majority of southcentral AZ in July, August, and September to
go along with above normal temperatures. More detailed weather and rainfall information on the

Table 6 above shows temperature data averaged across the entire ALERT weather station network.
Values were calculated using WY2022 data. Anomalies and ranks were calculated using data from
the entire period of record. Overall, the average temperature across all stations for WY 2022 was
73.3˚F, which was 1.5˚F warmer than the long term average of 71.7˚F. This ranked as a tie for the
second warmest water year on record (data back to WY 2000) with WY2017. Looking at the
anomaly data (not shown), thirty-six of the weather stations were warmer than average with six
stations experiencing their warmest average temperatures on record.
The average maximum temperature across all stations was 84.7˚F, which was 0.9˚F warmer than
the long term average of 83.9˚F. This ranked as the third warmest water year on record (data back
to WY 2010). Thirty-two of the weather stations were warmer than average with six stations
experiencing their warmest average maximum temperatures on record. It’s worth noting, no
weather stations set daily maximum temperature records as shown in Figure 2 above.

The average minimum temperature across all stations was 61.7˚F, which was 1.0˚F warmer than
the long term average of 60.7˚F. WY 2022 ranked as the fourth warmest on record (data back to
WY 2010). Five of the weather stations experienced their warmest average minimum temperatures.
Interestingly enough, six of the weather stations average minimum temperatures were colder than
the long-term average but none registered their coldest minimum average temperature on record.
None of the weather stations set daily minimum temperature records as dentoed in Figure 3 above.
