What began over thirty years ago with a simple grant has turned into a town funded, out-patient facility that is licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services and provides screening and counseling services to hundreds of people each year. GYAR’s dedicated professional staff is comprised of a Counseling Manager, six licensed counselors, and an administrative assistant, who all work together to provide for the various mental and behavioral health needs of victims, offenders, and citizens. GYAR’s Professional Staff: Pictured above from left to right is Karen Gregorski, Sarah Steen, Keith Bradshaw, Amber Lee, Juliene Williams, Jennifer Hood, Maria Bushard, and Rick Foss. GYAR provides a wide range of service delivery programs which are summarized as follows: Э Individual Counseling – GYAR offers short-term, solution focused therapy for individuals experiencing temporary psychosocial stressors whose treatment needs can best be met by using this intervention. Those needing a higher level of care are referred to outside community treatment providers. Э Court Ordered Counseling – GYAR screens defendants who are mandated to complete court ordered counseling for misdemeanor charges. GYAR monitors their treatment compliance and reports back to the court to promote rehabilitation and ensure accountability. Э Juvenile Diversion Programs – GYAR completes a comprehensive assessment with juvenile offenders and their parents to determine appropriate diversion requirements. As part of those requirements, GYAR counselors run three different diversion groups which focus on issues such as substance abuse, incorrigible behaviors, and other life skills training. Э Crisis Intervention – GYAR counselors provide 24/7 on-call coverage to give victims of crisis or a traumatic event immediate support & resources on scene to help stabilize them. Э Victim Assistance Services - GYAR counselors also work with individuals referred to us by the police, particularly those victims of domestic violence (DV) where their risk of lethality is scored at elevated or high level by officers completing the DV Lethality Assessment (DVLA). GYAR outreaches DV victims within 24 hours to provide safety planning, resources, and ongoing support to ensure victims are empowered and remain safe. 6 | News and Events News & Events Э Information & Referral - GYAR counselors triage the needs of citizens who call in seeking mental or behavioral health services by providing resources and referrals if GYAR is unable to provide the needed treatment. These various service delivery programs promote a high quality of life for the people GYAR serves and enables them to have access to the mental and behavioral health services that will meet their needs. Below are some of GYAR’s FY21 statistics which highlight the successes of the service delivery programs: Э GYAR counselors served a total of 2,636 clients Э GYAR counselors responded to a total of 51 crisis call outs in the community for a total of 75 hours helping citizens in distress and supporting the officers on scene. Э Arizona peace officers use the standardized Arizona Intimate Partner Risk Assessment Instrument System (APRAIS) when meeting with victims of domestic violence (DV). The victim’s responses to these questions are included in the police report which GYAR counselors review each day and score to determine the level of lethality risk to each victim. If the lethality risk for serious injury or death by an intimate partner is elevated or high to the victim, then GYAR counselors will outreach the victim within 24 hours to provide DV education, resources, referrals, and counseling as appropriate to mitigate these dangers to victims. During FY21, GYAR counselors reviewed a total of 814 police reports containing the APRAIS, 272 of which scored elevated or high and were therefore outreached by GYAR counselors in an effort to assist these victims. Additionally, as a community based outpatient licensed facility, GYAR works hard to establish strong professional relationships in the community among the many stakeholders that share involvement in the various social causes that GYAR also espouses. These include things such as mental health fairs, CIT trainings, and events and donation drives for domestic violence awareness month. As GYAR unites with the community to participate in these and other activities, we hope to continue to keep Gilbert a safe and healthy place to live.
