Those experts w ere right. On Tuesday, Arizona Cardinals head coach Vince Tobin named Plummer the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Oilers. Plummer earned the nod over the injured Graham and third-year pro Stoney Case, who failed to impress Tobin in last week’ s game. “T he bottom line is th a t w e ’re 1-6 at th is p o in t in tim e,” Tobin said, “W e need to w in a foo tb all gam e. I think that Jake will give us the best opportunity at quar terback to win this ball gam e.” A lthough the change w as w ildly rum ored before th e announcement, Plummer said he was thrilled at the decision, . “I t’s ex citin g . I t’s a g re a t o p p o rtu n ity fo r m y se lf,” Plum m er said. “It w asn’t som ething that I w asn’t sitting there, chewing my nails, wondering about. B u t once the deci sion was made 1 was happy. It’s a big step in my career.” The switch comes on the heels o f Plummer’s impressive pro debut last week against the Philadelphia Eagles. Plummer relieved Case with die Cardinals pinned on their own twoyard line and calmly led the team 98 yards. The drive culmi nated with a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kevin Williams, giving Arizona a short-lived 10-7 lead. P lum m er finished the day 5-for-9, fo r a total o f 95 yards. He also rushed three tim es for 22 yards. E ven w ith the notable perform ance, T obin isn’t ready to declare Plum m er the savior for the C ardinals’ offensive w oes. H e shuffled the starting lineup, inserting Johnny M cW illiam s at tight end and Jam es D exter al right guard. He also prom ised that running back D errick M oore and offensive linem en M att Joyce and Aaron G raham w ould see m ore playing time. T obin said he realizes m ost young quarterbacks strug gle during their first few years in the league. “W e ca n ’t throw it all on Ja k e ’s sho u ld ers,” T obin said. “In order for Us to be a better football team, and to win gam es — the tw o or three changes that 1 made, those guys have obviously got to play well. “M ost quarterbacks have struggled for a year o r tw o w hen they’ve had to com e in and play their first year.
