A representative of the ISC was expected to contact F razier’s office Thursday or Friday, but the ASU negotiator had no update as of late Thursday afternoon. The team s would rent ASU facilities such as University swimming pools, weight rooms and track and field areas, ASU officials have said. — ... , Hhe official also has said that the, athletes could possibly be housed in ASU residence halls. R e g e n ts e x p e c te d to a p p ro v e fu n d s for law ce n te r By Wayne Baker Staff w riter The Arizona Board of Regents is expected to approve a request by ASU to spend Engineering Excellence funds to establish an addition to the College of Law, according to Robert Huff, regents’ executive director. At its February m eeting in Tucson this weekend, the board will consider approving a request to use the "funds to establish a Center for the Study of Law, Science and Technology. t'-. * « Huff said the request “will probably go through;” He said additional inform ation has been provided to the regents since they first heard the request a t the January board meeting. “The regents have raised the question ‘Is this really high-tech?’ ” Huff said. “The answer they are getting back from the out side community is ‘Yes.’ ” If the request is approved, the funds would pay for faculty and staff needed for the first year of the proposed center’s operation. If those funds are not appropriated, the University will either reallocate existing resources or delay the establishm ent of the center, according to a report issued to the board from its central staff. Huff said ASU had included a provision for the c a ite r as p art of its budget request for the 1984-85 Engineering Excellence pro gram previously approved by the regents. At the b o n d ’s January meeting, several reg en ts expressed doubts w hether p u b lish in g an addition to the College of Law is an appropriate use of engineering funds. If established, the cento* will encourage lpgai and interdisciplinary research into technologically-related issues and add new courses relating to law and technology. The regents staff report estim ated $244,000 is needed for the first year of opera tions, including a provision for expanding the Law Library by 750 to 1,000 new monographs and 20 to 30 new journals. The University also has initiated a fund raising campaign to generate private sup port for the center. The regents also will consider: •Approving an agreem ent between ASU and Intercollegiate Enterprises, Inc., a Califor nia corporation, to allow ICE to act as the University’s agent to license the use of the Sun Devil logo on m erchandise m arketed in the United States, its territories and posses sions and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The three-year contract would allow the University to collect on an annual basis 60 percent of the first $50,000 collected, about 66 percent of the next $50,000 and 70 percent of all revenue in excess of $100,000. •A report on Executive Budget Office tand jo in t Legislative Budget Committee recom mendations for univarsity appropriations The EBO and JLBC recommendations are premised on tuition and fee levels of $950 for resident students and $3,700 for out-of-state students a t ASU and U of A. The regents have said they will determ ine the 1984-85 tui tion and fees a t their March meeting. The $143.4 million ASU budget recom mended by the JLBC for the 1984-85 school year is a 4.6 percent increase over the cur rent year. However, the recommendation is 10.8 percent less than the University re quested. in sid e today: The W o r d . . . in words and pictures ASU exercise program fit to be tried Devils hope to skin Cats; avenge 71-49 basketball loss Page 6 Page 10 Page 13 rrr-««IM O ffe r F ro m / w orld rm O lt n n f9 ] v s , j i p ; — UdbMrtÿ «nt i mota r tlW in »«SHINVTJ* «M ie «Baç> i » * E íra e i< [!■ » » ! ï * t e r « # » ,a ( _____ : f*HMBear « n a í « UM VW 3 H M 9M w ÿ o t Kl « rw » « yot jMiWUÉMU TfauiUU; j» * 0 U « u * iU 6 * e laU i* jthiTTT hnhinf' U o H t w w _* U r n e U • * U t UdUtu« M**U? *"*?“ * ' jU L r -Mmne mm U>0 .'U l M c a>U t t a t ru m * » * k r * ÍjmmJ*MUb 6M Ä « E M lllM in * ' NlUtî* to b o o st c r o p ptanrtm gs in 1964 T a rfia tü r uHr •* ■'— —«*-*■-«■«»nfr r s . et&aate-Maa- h« 1MJHM «em aw rau* m u t a i r * » w c .^ ^ «M *UW to « * ' U f c * U te n -M w e n « ttU e 1MÛU > tuet j w a r f c JÉK- * "te Isurtff w y ' ftigr chueawfiiw- «aSHENCTUft .*P>—T te » !* « !» to n * « * « 'U tfa w * a f a n t « w t a u n p a r w i t « ? tm? will i*j*nst £*-*$>f*Ua jjiu MchulMf » jpfartwot BMttt toro, tt* n S 'i t u m m l « j * n a i e n s a if T n ir « » : M .__ o m l «»— » M m ! Police said the n u tte r will be forwarded to the Office of Student Life. Dean Leon Shell said as of Thursday afternoon he had not received a report on the incident, but that the m atter would probably have to be studied to determ ine whether it involved a violation of the University Code of Conduct. Shell added that a variety of actions could be taken if the incident was judged to be a violation, but declined to speculate on any possible consequences the 29-year-old graduate student might face. The Mesa m an was arrested by Universi ty Police shortly after 3 p.m. for investiga tion into charges of disorderly conduct after the staff m ember noticed a m irror sticking out of a bookshelf and aim ed a t her dress. With the help of other library employees, she was able to detain the m an until police arrived The student adm itted to police he had used a mechanic’s inspection m irror, a sm all m irror with a handle, to gaze up the woman's dress. The man was fingerprinted and processed by ASU Police, a system which provides only for reprim and, not prosecution. She said the car was parked in Lot 59 and valued the light green canvas cover at $106. •A woman was involved in a one-car acci dent early Thursday near the intersection of F irst Street and Packard Drive. There were no injuries, but 100 feet of fence along the north side of F irst Street was damaged, ac cording to police reports. •While an ASU student was in the MU Mon day his wallet was removed from his backpack, he told police Wednesday. He valued the w allet and its contents a t $30. •Between Monday and Wednesday, so meone attem pted to break into an ASU stu dent’s car through a window on the driver’s side while it was parked in Lot 53, she told police Wednesday. February 17, Lady netters cruise to victory By Tom Blodgett Assistant sports editor The ASU women’s tennis team continued its strong roll from the previous day by downing the University of New Mexico 8-1 yesterday a t the Whiteman Center. The Sun Devils swept through the first five singles m atches to clinch the victory before dropping their only m atch of the afternoon. , Vanessa Miller, the Devils’ No. 2 player, led the victory by thoroughly dominating her opponent, Kuuki McCalla, 6-2, W>. Miller opened the first set by reeling off five straight games. She lapsed tem porarily before finishing McCalla off. . The Sun Devils’ No. 1 player, Shen N om s, also made short work of her opponent, Leanne Palm isano, 6-2,6-1. The two women split the first four games of the first set before Norris took control. ASU coach D r. Anne P ittm an has said that it is strength throughout the lineup which wins m atches for team s, and that depth certainly helped her out. "M atches are won in the No. 3 doubles and the Nos. 4, 5, 6 singles,” P ittm an said. “If you can win there, anything your strong players do after that is icing on the cake.” ASU dropped only one of the four m a tch e s deemed critical by Pittm an. Jane Paulson, ASU’s No. 5 singles player, locked herself in a struggle with R ath in the first set before falling 6-4. But R ath took control quickly in the second and polished off Paulson 6-1.
