ASU budget proposal
to be passed by council
falls $13 million short

After enduring a m arathon m eeting late Tuesday in an ef­
fort to approve a state budget far the 1983-84 fiscal year,
Arizona legislators were expected to approve a $130.6 million
budget for ASU.
The amount allotted by the Lejgslature is about $13 million
short of the requested budget presented by Univereity Prési­
d ait J. Russell Nelson.
Rep. Doug Todd, R-Tempe, said university budget pro­
posals issued by the Senate and the House are close in com­
parison, including alm ost $100 million in state funds for ASU.
The remaining portion of the University budget is to be
made up from student tuition and registration fees, and other
University collections.
The allotm ent is considered favorable by the Arizona
Board of Regents, according to Robert Huff, the board’s ex­
ecutive director.
“It’s wonderful news com pared to w hat we thought we’d be
getting a month ago,” he said.
Todd said although the University’s budget is fairly clearcut, he expects some argum ent over a request for a lump­
sum appropriation which would allow m ore flexibility than
item-by-item listing.
Approval of the $130.6 million, budget would mean the
University will get about the sam e am ount it received last
year, before Gov. Bruce B abbitt’s lo-percent across-theboard appropriation réduction took place.
Although the 10-percent cutback has helped reduce
Arizona’s deficit, Todd said the state still faces an $80 million
shortage.
In an effoit to help die state regain its funding shortage, the
Board of Regents voted earlier this month to charge a one­
time $95 surcharge to all students attending Arizona univer­
sities.
The surcharge is expected to generate between $2.5 million
and $3 million next year, according to Board erf Regents
estim ates.
The Legislature has recommended a budget of about $150
million for U of A and about $40 million for NAU.
The Senate and House appropriations committees are
scheduled to m eet through Friday to solidify a tentatively ap­
proved $1.7 billion budget for the state for next year.

Ticket office, lounge vie for MU space

The layout of the lower level vacancy in the MU has been
decided upon by its three future tenants, according to the
vice president for business affairs.
Frank Sackton said the northern most area, the prim e loca­
tion in the lower level of the 14,000 square-foot form er home
of the ASU Bookstore, will be divided between two of the
tAnnnta — a central ticket office and a student lounge and
study area.
However the third tenant, the Dean of Students Office, was
also required to discuss the layout before an agreem ent was
reached.
“It (the decision) was a compromise plan that was derived
out of the old plans A and B,” he said.
Plan A proposed the northern space be exclusively oc­
cupied by the ticket office, while Plan B placed the student
lounge and study area in that sam e area.
The various plans for the vacancy were reviewed by
members of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Renovation of
Space whose most recent task, after deciding the future
lAnanto, was to decide how those tenants would specifically
be located.
Sackton said the decision to use the compromised plan

came out of a m eeting he held Tuesday, attended by
Associated Students President Neil Giuliano, Dean of
Students Leon Shell, Jim O’Connell, coordinator of e m its for
Gammage Center and members of the Department of Plann­
ing.
However, that decision differed from the original decision
Sackton m ade based on a report from the Committee.
Last week, after reading the report that included a con­
troversial vote on the use of the space, Sackton had decided
that the space would be solely dedicated to the ticket office.
He presented the idea to the vice presidents council, and
although no form al vote was taken, no further consideration
of the m atter was called for.
However, partly because of the uncertainty in the commit­
tee’s voting, President J. Russell Nelson requested that
Sackton “ make one m ore effort to get an agreem ent,”
Sackton said.
“Everybody was unhappy with the (committee’s) 5-5 vote
on the space,” Sackton said, adding “the three (future
tenants) cam e to the new agreem ent on their own.”
The compromised plan is currently in the Planning Depart­
ment, according to Sackton, “where they will co n e up with
detailed design specifications and architectural drawings. ”

as acceptable,” Flys said, adding that the

However, according to Flys, Kinsinger
has not yet outlined how the acting chair­
m an will be selected.
H e said Kinsinger was concerned th at it is
too late in the year to find a perm anent
replacem ent for Flys, who will vacate the
p^itin n May 18 to conduct research work in
Spain.
Kinsinger’s proposal was preceded by his
rejection of P eter Horwath, foreign
lpngiugA professor, who was nominated for
the position by a search committee con­

sisting of foreign language faculty
members.
Kinsinger declined to comment on why
the Horwath nomination was rejected.
However, he said for future consideration of
the vacant position, “I don’t think there is
anybody that’s excluded.”
Kinsinger also proposed that he meet with
each member of the departm ent of foreign
language faculty to discuss options which
exist in choosing toe future chairman.
“Each departm ent member will have the
opportunity to express his opinion concern­
ing the new chairm anship and whether to
search inside or outside the University, or a

combination of boto,” he said.
He added, “At toe interview, we would
like departm ent members to express their
wishes on whether they would like to con­
tinue as one departm ent. ”
Flys said Kinsinger will compile the data
collected during toe interviews and “com­
m unicate those findings and leave it up to
the departm ent for their decision. ”
However, he said he tod not know how
long the interviewing process would take, or
when a decision would be made concerning
to e chairm anship and the possible division
of the departm ent.

Senate committee edits bill
regarding deaths of unborn

PHOENIX — The Senate Judiciary
Committee yesterday rew rote a House
b ill th at .proposed m anslaughter
penalties for anyone guilty of m urdering
an unborn baby by injuring the mother.
A Maricopa County prosecutor argued
that the House Mil was essential to close
a gap in state law regarding wrongful
fatal deaths.
In other action, the committee en­
dorsed House Mils prohibiting local
governments from enacting gun control
ordinances and removing conflicts in the
state’s new m otor-voter law.
- The committee approved unamended
another House Mil removing some am­
biguities in the state’s new motor-voter
law.
“We need a law that deals with the in­
tentional death of an unborn child,” said
deputy Maricopa County attorney Joe
Fuller. “We don’t have anything now.”
He cited die case of a Cochise County
m an who hired a Mt m an to kill his preg­
nant girlfriend, who was only an hour
away from delivery when she and the un­
born child were killed.
“The Supreme Court said we were
unable to do anything about the death of
a fetus under state law,” said Fuller.
But E d Novak, a defense attorney, said
the proposal was based on “hypothesis,”
requiring th at the fetal death be defined
as m anslaughter if the injury to the
m other would have been murder.
“It requires proof of two crim es, and
I’d have no trouble defending such a
case,” Novak said.
Tucson Republican John Mawhinney
supplied the compromise amendment
which would m ake the death of a fetus an
“aggravating circum stance” to any in­
jury to the m other. The final version

went to the fiill Senate by an 8-1 vote,
with Phoenix Republican Tony West
dissenting.
Two county recorders and a Motor
Vehicle Division spokesman urged
passage of the House changes in the con­
troversial new law allowing Arizonans to
register to vote when they apply for a
driver’slicense.
“It cleans up the contradictory parts of
the law,” said Coconino County Recorder
Helen Hudgins.
As adopted, Mrs. Hudgins said exam inos were unable to register all ap­
plicants in Sedona, split between
Yavapai and Coconino counties. The bill
would give examiners the sam e autho­
rity to register residents of other coun­
ties as recorders.
Pim a County Recorder Richard Ken­
nedy said the changes also would relieve
his office of sim ilar troubles in Ajo,
where registrars were from Maricopa
County.
“I’ve had to send a man over there a t a
cost of $100 a day to do the registrations,"
said Kennedy.
Meantime, Terry Stewart of the MVD
said a compromise between Maricopa
County Recorder Bill Henry, who refused
to deputize examiners as registrars, has
been worked out.
By a surprising 9-0 vote, the House Mil
went to die full Senate. The sam e com­
mittee, chaired by Phoenix Republican
Peter Kay, endorsed a referendum call­
ing for repeal of the law. That proposal is
now in the House.
Without discussion, the committee sent
to the full Senate the House Mil pro­
hibiting any local government from
adopting ordinances requiring registra­
tion or restraining transportation of
firearm s.

"Macho-right" distorts truth
Editor:
Jay Heiler’s columns on defense policy,
especially the one on March 29, are a sad
com m entary on the present state of the con­
servative mind- The distortions of the truth
amount to no more than unthinking Cold
W ar dogma and anti-Soviet hysteria; and
the deceptive use of language is rem iniscent
of the 1964-ish Johnson-Nixon appeals for
peace through war.
The attem pts of the Weinbergers,
Reagans, Kirkpatricks and their supporters
among the macho-right to relate the Munich
appeasem ent to the peace movement is a
display of a reactionary and dangerous
m isunderstanding of the changed state of
the world and the qualitative difference in
arm am ents since the first use of nuclear
bombs on the civilian populations of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Claims that peace people are dupes of the

Soviets or that they are “openly looking to
Andropov for idea logical leadership” ignore
the fact that peace activists have consistent­
ly condemned brutal, repressive regim es
whether they were communist or anti­
communist.
Hysterical clamoring about “M arxist in­
doctrination” in our schools seems like a
prelude to attem pts to deny inquiring
students the opportunity to learn about
alternative ideas and to make their own
decisions.
Let us hope that m illion s of patriotic
Americans will continue to demand through
town meetings, churches, schools, the ballot
box, their state legislatures, and in the
streets th at their government pursue a
policy of strength through peace—not war.

In the movie “Network,” the main
character, a highly disgruntled newsman,
raves on national television that be is “mad
as hell” and be “can’t take itanym ore.”
Though I too am a bit dismayed, I will
take no such drastic steps. This editorial
should be sufficient.
I’m dismayed by all of the criticism s
which have been heaped on almost all facets
of ASU by various individuals over the
years.
We’ve all been guilty of making cracks or
j oking about humorous situations which oc­
cur a t this University.
But some people aren’t joking; they are
leveling accusations, making statem ents
an d charges in addition to sounding the w ar
cry of ‘mayhem, disaster and pathos’ while
riding upon their white horses.
These self-appointed guardians of civil
decency and regality make a loud noise, but
they don’t help to alleviate any of the situa­
tions which they decry.
Now, I’m not naive enough to believe that
no problems exist a t ASU. TCiis is reality.
However, ASU is constantly striving to
take problems by the proverbial horns and
constructively deal with them, unlike some
people who offer criticism s without solu­
tions to the ASU community.
The ASU community is a group of people
with common goals — to educate, to re­
search, to grow, to enjoy and to strive for
the fullest of our human potential.
And while those offering criticism s may
not see it, this goal is being achieved.
The College of Business Administration
serves approximately 11,000 students, and is
expanding to serve the needs of more

students and ultim ately m ore business con­
cerns across the nation.
The College of Engineering and Applied
Sciences, now inittie process of striving for
“Engineering ExoeOence,” is also expan­
ding to provide m ore reseach for industry,
and consequently, b etter learning oppor­
tunities far students.
Associated Students of ASU (the student
government for the sixth-largest university
in the nation) provides legislative represen­
tation, a film series, a speakers’ program, a
bicycle repair cooperative, and an intram urab program , among other services.
The Memorial Union Activities Board pro­
vides m ore of the sam e—such as a film pro­
gram , activities and m ore.
The ASU Housing Office also is important,
providing m ore rooms so that less students
have to search for off-campus housing every
year.
H ie sports program offers athletes the
chance and facilities to perform , and offers
spectators the pleasure and enjoyment
derived from their school’s athletic con­
quests.
The ASU police provide order and peace
in this creative atm osphere, to permit the
goals of the University to be reached by all,
and obstructed by none.
And, last but not least, the ASU ad­
m inistration coordinates all of the above
and much m ore for nearly 38,000 students.
Certainly, when you think about it, this all
seems to be the im pressive work of a small
city.
With this realized, those who wish to
criticize ASU should be taken aback a little.
Perhaps, instead of taking a negative
stance, they will take a positive one and pro­
pose to ASU w hat can be done, instead
m erely m m p lain in g about what isn’t being
properly done.
Maybe I’m dream ing of Utopia under the
Arizona sun.
But I don’t think so.

Sports writer's view of basketball needs more thought
Editor:
Never have I read a m ore unknowledgeable piece of sports
journalism th an that w ritten by Tom Blodgett in Thursday’s
State Press.
F irst and foremost are the cheap shots you take a t the
NBA. Certainly the Lakers, 76ers and the Celtics are the
cream of the crop, followed closely by a half-dozen or so
team s, including our own Phoenix Suns, who are striving to
become p art of that elite group. But to call a collection of the
world’s finest basketball players “sad” is downright ir­
responsible. Name another m ajor professional sport that
shows any greater degree o f parity. If there is no parity in the
NBA, why is it that no team has repeated as die League
champions since the 1968-69 Celtics. Yes, a half-dozen or so
team s are in dire straits. But tins has m ore to do with poor
m anagem ent and fickle fan support than poor entertainm ent
or less-than-100 percent performances.
Second, you call Georgia and NC State “nobodies.”
Cinderella team s, yes. But to call these two basketball team s
“nobodies” only reflects your lack of knowledge and respect
for these two fine schools. Georgia battled their way to vic­

tory in the post-season tournam ent of the SEC, as well as
defeating some fine team s to get to the Final Four. NC State
has a fine basketball tradition. Call tbem team s of destiny,
tbe fortunate, or ju st plain lucky if you wish. I’d save the
word ‘nobody* for those persons who adm ire your basketball
sense.
•Finally, your rem arks on die gam e itself show a case of
haskettiafl ignorance. To label shot clocks and three-point
goals “gimmicks’’ is ludicrous. H ie shot dock is a logical
step forw ard for the college gam e. A 20-second dock for all
NCAA games would put tbe gam e back where it belongs, in
die hands of die players. Witilout the dock, players are merely pawns in the hands of the coaches. G reat coaches will earn
their stars on their own, not a t the expense of the players and
die gam e. Without a shot dock, inferior team s can jump to an
early lead and sit on tbe ball, milking tbe clock for all its
worth. Anyone who is thrilled watching a four-corner «• stall
offense for three-quarters of a gam e should be banished to a
desert island with nothing m ore than copies of your brilliant
editorials.

As for the three-point goal, this is a legitim ate means to
keep games dose near the end, allowing one team to cl<*e a
large deficit in a short time if they have die talent. A 25-foot
three-point shot will make college basketball th at much more
exciting, particularly in games where it is the only means for
one team to get back into a contest
And since when did “run-and-gun” basketball come to be
associated with die shot-dock and the three-point shot? A
fast-break offense requires ju st as much, if not more, of the
fundamentals such as pausing, defense, rebounding and
shooting. No, passing, thinking mid coaching are not the sole
province of undocked games.
I hope you won’t lose you incentive to w rite about sports. 1
do suggest you stay within you sphere of knowledge the next
time you wish to enlighten us on some sport. As for your ques­
tion, “When was the last tim e I saw a shot clock in a park or a
schoolyard?” Probably when I saw a coach, a stall offense,
or you in a pick-up game.

Re-entry series helps adults

For student« older tta o 35, entering o r re­
entering the world of higher education can
be difficult and som etimes confusing.
According to J o Anne O’Donnell,
associate dean of students, a series of
sem inars has been prepared through the
Dean of Students Office to aid these students
in their education a t ASU.
The series is composed of three separate
sem inars: C areer O pportunities and
Preparation throujÿi Education (COPE),
Stress Management Workshop and TestTaking and Study Skills.
The second of two sem inars in the COPE
series, which is Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30
p.m. in the MU Pim a Room, deals with
career opportunities for students in the area '
of high technology and will feature a panel
of professionals in various areas of
business, engineering and com puter
science.
The sem inar is aimed a t the over-25 age
group but is open to any interested student.
The need for this sort of program was
realized when the num ber of older students
enrolling a t ASU w as increasing, O’Donnell
said.
The increase of returning students can be
attributed to several filings, according to
O’Donnell.
“People are living longer and are also
wage earners longer, and they don’t want to

stay in the sam e type of work for 40 years,”
she said.
The returning student does not always go
back to school for money.
O’Donnell said that on file average, adults
between the ages of 25 and 40 want to ac­
quire m arketable skills, while those
between the ages of 40 and 50 are more in­
terested in personal growth.
The sem inar on Thursday will offer
students a chance to meet and hear profes­
sionals in the- areas of personnel and
employment management from companies
such as G arrett Carp., Motorola and Intel,
as well as two members of the ASU faculty.
The panel members will give an overview
of their fields, and what the future job
m arket looks like.
The whole series of seminars is aimed
specifically a t the older students because
the needs and concerns of the returning
students are varied from that of the student
just out of high school, O’Donnell said.
The student who is returning to finish an
undergraduate degree.or just starting a
university career has fears that a younger
student might not have.
The older student often bolds a stereotype
Of the traditional 18- to 25-year-old student,
and even though the stereotype may no
longer be true, returning students often feel
unusual and out of place, O’Donnell said.
The cost of the sem inar is $2, and tickets
are available a t the door.

Kush declined comment an the ruling,
. but Kuril’s attorney, M ichael Gallagher,
said, “I would rath er have won it than

Unemployed workers in the United States should have
“sharply improved” chances of finding work in the next
three months, with a slight improvement of the job situation
in the West, according to a nationwide survey conducted by
Manpower, Inc.
The firm surveyed more than 11,000 leading companies in
SO population cen to s regarding their employment plans for
April, May and June 1983.
Phoenix and other cities ip the Valley, as well as Tucson,
were included in the survey, according to Jerry Tuerff, presi­
dent of Arizona operations for Manpower.
Tuerff said his company's survey is “usually pretty ac­
curate” because it does not attem pt to interpret the data, but
only ask leading companies in the area what their plans for
increasing or decreasing their employment force are.
Tuerff said the results of the survey indicate a “good, lively
quarter.” Prelim inary findings for the next quarter point to
an even better outlook for July, August and September, he
said.
Employment levels in the western region are expected to
be a t dwir highest since the fourth quarter of 1981.
Of all industries surveyed in the w estern region, which en­
compasses the 12 westernmost states, including Hawaii but
excluding Alaska, 23 percent said they expected to increase
their employment while only ll percent said they would
decrease i t
There was no change predicted by 65 percent of the western
region industries, and 2 percent said they did not know their
plana.
Nationally, 21 percent of all industries said they expected
increased employment while only 8 percent planned to cut
their employee levels. That is the highest level of industry
planning increases since 1981.

“cautious but very solid” rise in business confidence, accor­

pected to occur in those sectors which were hardest hit dur­
ing the recession — construction and manufacturing goods,

Of the four regions highlighted in the survey, Northeast,
M idwest South and W est the South showed the best employ­
m ent outlook, with 23 percent of all industries planning in­
creases and 7 percent expecting decreases.
Significant increases were shown by companies in the con­
struction industry, with 33 percent of these companies in the
Western region planning increased employment and 20 per­
cent planning decreases.
M anufacturers of durable goods also intend to augment
their work forces during the next three months. Of those com­
panies in this region, 29 percent said their employment would
increase while 14 percent said their employee levels would go
down.
Tuerff said that industries such as construction and
manufacturing of durable goods were toe main indicators of
an employment upswing, and that increases in their employ­
m ent would lead to higher levels of employment in service
and other industries.
Gains were also shown by the finance, insurance and real
estate industries in the West. TTieir employment predictions,
22 percent of companies increasing and »percent decreasing,
indicated toe best level for that sector since the first quarter
of 1981.
Manpower based their results on telephone interviews with
m ore than 11,175 public and private employers in 348 cities in
the m ajor U.S. population centers during the last two weeks

Decline of college rolls
to reverse, survey says

WASHINGTON — Last tall private colleges shuddered in
what they feared was the first stage of a long-expected
decline in enrollm ent, while public schools managed a
m arginal nationwide gain of27,000students.
But a just-completed study of freshm an applications for
file fall 1963 term suggests ju st the opposite might happen
next year.
The number of freshm an applications a t private colleges is
up 7 percent over this tim e last year, according to the Chroni­
cle of Higher Education’s annual survey of admissions
trends, while applications to public schools have dropped by 8
percent
If those application figures hold, observers said, they
represent a dram atic and unanticipated reprieve for many of
the nation’s 1000independent colleges and universities.
“We certainly w eren’t expecting (the increase in applica­
tions), and a t this point aren’t quite sure what to make of i t ”
said Bill M cNamara, spokesman for the National Association
of IndependentCoUeges and Universities (NAICU).
“We hope it’s a good sign,” he added, “but early applica­
tions aren’t really a reliable barom eter of what could happen
next September.
“Out of all those students who apply, there’ll be a lot of noshows and a lot of cancellations, so it’s very difficult to say
what will happen in the end,” he said.
Public colleges, which expect their student populations to
hold level next year, are sim ilarly baffled by the early ap­
plications dropoff of 8 percent
“We aren’t expecting any kind of a drop of that magnitude
hi actual enrollm ent next fall,” said Gary Hudgens,
spokesman for the National Association of State Universities
and Land G rant Colleges.

predicted. But once you get a downturn like we had this fall,
it’s extrem ely hard to pull out of it in one year’s term . ”
H ie downturn was dram atic. Private college enrollment
fell by nearly 4 percent since the 1961-82 school year.
Observers attributed the decline to a student migration
from the m ore exp en sive independent campuses to cheaper
four- and two-year public colleges.

involved with the National International Student Association
spoke about international dimensions of ASU and the pro­
blems of foreign students on Tuesday. NISA is coordinating
groups working with foreign students.
“Our basic problem is trying to bring Americans and
foreign students together as a whole,” said Dr. Nemi Jain,
faculty adviser for the departm ent of communication. “The
students lim it themselves to their own language and food.”
Charlene Schumacher, candidate for activities vice presi­
dent, said she would like to see a center for foreign students
on campus. She cited a need to let foreign students know
they’re welcome.

languages are until they’ve been to a foreign country,” Chris
Harrison, president of NISA, said.
Ted Groves, candidate for Activities Vice President, said
there are foreign language floors in some residence halls.
Groves said we m ust learn th at not everyone speaks English.
“Approximately 4 percent of ASU’s population is foreign,”
Harrison said. “These people are from 126 different nations
but only about 20 nations are represented on campus. That’s
where the problem is.”
Schumacher added that an international reception for
students was held and only four Americans attended. “There
are very few program s offered for international students. I
would like to gather people together to talk and set up com­
m ittees of students from different clubs to work together to
decide what speakers they would like to hear,” she said.
“There is a great need for togetherness. There is no global
society a t ASU. The foreign students have good organizations
but we need to broaden the horizon so American students can
see global term s,” Jain said.
Jain said that if American students learn about other
cultures, tiie possibilities for them to work abroad teaching
or with the Peace Corps will be greater.
“There is a real desire among Americans to reach out

Harrison said he would like to see the overall community

'Butterflier'plans to swim English Channel

Countless people have boated, floated, sailed and swam the
icy tides of the English Channel, but an ASU swimmer wants
to fly across i t
Butterfly, th at is —the hardest stroke known to swimmers.
It is Brad Hering’s specialty.
“I’ve always wanted to be the fastest butterflier in the
world, but why not the furthest butterflier also?” he said.
“In my swimming career, I have experienced short
distances and short glories,” he said. “This would be more
impressive than a gold m edal a t the Olympics.”
In the past decade, over 215 people have challenged the
waters of the English Channel. Ten years ago, the odds of
success were one in ten. Today those odds have improved to
one success in every five attem pts.
In 1981, two twins, the DiDonato brothers, set out to be the
first to “fly” across the Channel, but because of the chill fac­
tor, they both failed.
Hering, convinced th at failure is not in the picture, has his
reasons for accepting the challenge.
“Just recently I have beenjnqre aw are of the need for food
in the world,” he said. “ I think I can be an instrum ent to help
the needy by using my God-given talent.”
Bob W eiland, the legless m an ‘‘walking” across America
for world hunger, wad Hering’s inspiration.
“I saw a strength in him th at I didn’t have. That is, he’s do­
ingsomething that gives directly to people,” he said.
Over one billion starving and m alnourished persons are
suffering today, according to a United Nations Development
Forum.
“I’d rather spend seven hours of fatigue, cold, sickness,
aching and loneliness to help even one person who is ex­
periencing a lifetim e of it,” Hering said.
Hering’s m arathon, from Dover, England, to the French

“I will get sponsors for every stroke I m ake,” he said. “It
would total over $20,000, which will go toward hunger relief
programs.
“If the doors open for me a t the Olymines, I will use that as
my platform to attract sponsors,” he said.
Hering has chosen to swim the channel in the summer mon­
ths, when the w ater tem peratures reach a chilling 57 to 62
degrees. But cold w ater is the least of his worries.
According to Sports Illustrated, “Those who do make it
must contend with fog, debris, jellyfish, seaweed, oil slicks,
diesel fumes and seasickness, not to mention the hazard of
some 700 ships that pass through each day.”
Hering’s training program will consist of 10 to 15 mile
workouts daily. Ratlmr than in the pool, he will practice in
the lakes and canals of Arizona.

Tournament winner goes
to great lengths to spell
success at Scrabble game

It very well could be the only gam e in which the word
“quit” is worth twice as much as the word “win.”
An expert like Greg Lewis, who has won tour­
naments in Mesa and Scottsdale, and his teacher, who
has won 17 such tournam ents, knows th at “problems”
means an awful lot while “ease” is rath er disappoin­
ting.
For in the game of Scrabble, it is not the definition of
the word, but the length and letters used th at can spell
victory.
But the successful tournam ent player knows that
there is m ore to winning a gam e of Scrabble than using
the J, X, Z and Q tiles.
“The gam e is a lot m ore than just forming words,”
Lewis said. “There is a lot of strategy involved—mak­
ing sure th at your opponent opens the board, and you
close it again.”
Lewis explained the key to winning is making sure an
opponent is left few possibilities on the board and forc­
ing the opponent to allow use of bonus spaces which
double and triple the score.
To win the two tournam ents he has to his credit thus
far, Lewis has had to beat a m an he describes as “a
real heavyweight in Scrabble circles.”
The m an happens to be Lewis’ teacher, Stan Rubinsky.
By beating this m aster of toe Scrabble board, Lewis
became the first person to defeat Rubinsky in con­
secutive tournam ents.
Rubinsky has dominated Jocal Scrabble tournaments
for a long tim e now, according to Lewis, and will par­
ticipate in die national championship this year.
“He to one of toe few people in this area who studies
not only the words but the strategies,” his protege said.
Now Lewis, who says the gam e can be habit forming,
is seeking Scrabble enthusiasts to join a club compris­
ed of word-wizards from Mesa and Tempe.
“This gam e has as much strategy as chess, but with
an average vocabulary, anyone can knock off a really
excellent player,” he said.

rently 6-0 for the Sun Devils with a 0.91 ERA.

White, who has been a pleasant surprise
for the Devils, is the only freshman hurler
Littlewood has on her squad. She is 5-3 with
a 0.37 ERA and three Shutout victories. She
also has 50 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched.
Littlewood said the pitching staff has
made steady improvement throughout the
season but added that a tough part of the
schedule still remains.
Kelly Jackson starts for the Devils a t first
base. She is one of the key defensive players
in the infield. She will be a key to the Sun
Devil hopes for the remaining part of the
season.
Arizona State will travel to Tucson today
to take on the archrival Wildcats in a con­
ference game. The gam e against the U of A
is the first of six road games for the Devils.
ASU will return April 20 to host Cal StateLong Beach in another conference game.

Lady Sun Devils host
top-notch competition

The highly coveted Lady Sun Devil Collegiate Golf Tourna­
ment will sw ing'into action April 11-13 at the very tough
Mummy Mountain Golf Course.
This year’s 21-team field will include five of the top eight
team s in contention for the 1983 national team title.
Arizona State, Tulsa, SMU, Texas and Texas Christian will
be among the top team s in the tournam ent as they are among
the finest in die nation.
The Southeastern powers Florida, Florida State and
Geòrgia wifi be the only top team s in the nation not to be
shooting for the tourney championship.
This year’s tournam ent is loaded with the finest am ateur
women golfers in the world, and a dogfight will continue to
the finish.
Rounding out the rest of the competition are Arizona,
Brigham Young, California State-Long Beach, Hawaii,
Lam ar, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, S a n .
Jose State, Scottsdale Community College, Stanford, Texas
A & M, Washington, Weber State, UCLA and U.S. Interna­
tional.
“This annually is one of the top tournam ents in the coun­
try ,” ASU Head Coach Linda Voilstedt said. “We can’t
possibly accommodate all the team s who want to {day. It’s
also one of the largest fields in the country, and with some of
the top players, it is one of the strongest too.”
Joining the fine team s who are competing are also the top
five best women golfers in the collegiate ranks.
Sun Devil freshm an Heather F a rr and senior Nancy Taylor
will lead the Devil team while competing for their individual
title hopes. F arr is the current USGA junior champion, the
Arizona am ateur athlete of the year and junior golfer of the
year, according to both the P ro Golfers Association and Golf
Digest. Taylor is thè current USGA Public Links champion
and has a little more in the experience category.
This year’s ASU women golfers will have a good opportu­
nity to finish strong as they are on home turf and are playing
well of late.
Both Tulsa and Oklahoma are defending champions and
will prove tough in defending their previous honors.
SMU, who is a strong favorite in the tournament, will be led
by Curtis Cup members Amy Benz and Caty Hanlon. Another
Curtis Cup player, Kathy Baker of T uba, will lead her team
for the tourney honors.
Play on the par-72 championship course will begin at 8 a.m.
daily, with tee-offs scheduled through 10:15.
Spectators are allowed to watch the action and admission
is free.
ASU ran into trouble earlier this year in a tournament in
Tulsa. Tulsa was able to ride out a storm of bad weather to
outdistance ASU in the final tally.
This tim e though, ASU seem s ready for revenge. The field

Writers pick top teams
in baseball's divisions
The national pastim e is back. And after the fantastic
season last year, it will he well received.
How could any team hope to top the Atlanta Braves’ fast
start or the hitting of the Milwaukee Brewers? St. Louis’
defense was the tops last year, and Gene Autry’s California
Angels alm ost went to the World Series.
Today I decided to allow the rest of the sports desk to offer
their op*™«« on the upcoming season. Then after the other
writers tell you their lies, I will let you know how the season
will finish up.

I have bad news once again for all those die-hard Cubbie
fans in the Arizona State populace. The long-awaited World
Series entry w ill not happen this year, although they had
their winningest season last year since World War II. In­
stead, look for the California Angels and the San Diego
Padres to trad e off sending towering home runs over each
other’s outfield fences in a California World Series.
American League E ast: The “True Blue Brew Crew’’
(Milwaukee) should outlast the pack behind its error-less in­
field. Watch out for the Cleveland Indians who had a 69 per­
cent base-stealing average last year and will really scoot
down the base paths this season. The team has improved its
pitching as well.
American League West: The Angels of Anaheim will be
back this year after choking a two-game lead over the
Milwaukee Brew ers in last year’s pennant race. The Angels
will be led by thé m ajor league’s most productive eight-nine
batting combo behind Tim Foli and Bob Boone. Boone was
also the AL’s best catcher nailing 58 percent of all would-be
stealers.
Windy City fans m ay have reason to get excited this year
as the Chicago White Sox will be a power to contend with. The
Sox out-homered opponents 136-99 last year as well as had 51
hall« caught on the warning trade. “Deposit a ball here”
signs will be b arraged with balls this season in Comisky
Parte.
National League E ast: The Cubs will finish 21 games ahead
of their counterparts only when you turn the sports page up­
side down. The Phillies will be a power to be reckoned with
after their fantastic acquisition of form er “Big Red
Machine” standouts and should give Montreal a run for the
pennant.
National League W est: The San Diego Padres after signing
Steve Garvey now bave a winning combination and can’t help
but win behind M anager Dick Williams. Second place will go
to either the B raves, Giants or Dodgers. All three could win
and it will be a photo finish in this pennant race.

Since half the population of this school is from Illinois, I’m
sure I will m ake a lot of friends by being the only one to pick a
Chicago team to win its division. Other than that, I may make
only enemies, but who cares.
American League E ast: The Orioles will win despite the
loss of M anager E arl Weaver. Joe Altobelli is an able
replacement and will get along better with the players. The
O’s don’t have a lot of stars, just people who get the job done.
The Yankees added nearly 200 RBI’s to their lineup with Don
Baylor and Steve Kemp and will finish secMid. The loss of
Vukovich and Fingers will drop Harvey’s Wallbangers to
third.
American League W est: The White Sox will overcame the
sieve that is the left side of their, infield with- the strong
pitching of Floyd B annister and Lam ar Hoyt. The Angels will
challenge until their ages catch up with them, and the Royals
will be a contendor, but don’t have the stuff to catch the
Chisox. Seattle will be mediocre, and the rest of the division
is dog food.
National League E ast: St. Louis has the perfect team for
its billiard table stadium . Speed, pitching and defense will
carry the Redbirds to the pennant. Montreal has the person­
nel but m ust «i«» have a complex about having blown the
division so m any tim es. The Phillies can only go so far with
the “Wheeze Kids,” the oldest team in baseball» even with
Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton. The Cubs will have their se­
cond straight y ear out of the cellar, in fourth.
National League W est: The only thing that makes me hap­
pier than saying th at the Dodgers will finish fourth is saying
that the Giants will win i t The loss of Joe Morgan and Reggie
Smith isn’t th at bad, and they have the best outfield in
baseball — Jack d a rk , Chili Davis and Jeff Leonard — as
well as good pitching H ie Braves don’t have the pitching,
and the Padres need m ore than Steve Garvey to finish higher
than third.

darn dose to im possible. With injuries and surprise teams,

just never know. H iere are too many variables. But I will be
foolish and plunge ahead.
American League E ast: Baltimore appears to be a good
choice in a traditional AL E ast showdown with everyone else,
particularly the powerful Brewers and Yankees. Milwaukee
probably cannot repeat without Vukovich and Fingers.

American League West: This may be the weakest division
in baseball, but I believe a healthy Kansas City club will
prevail. The Royals were in the bunt until the end after hav­
ing Dennis Leonard gone most of the year, and Ibis year
they’ve added some pitching and some bench strength. I
believe California’s pitching to be suspect, and Chicago just
doesn’t have any defense.
National League E ast: S t Louis has the pitching, speed
and defense to repeat as champs. M ontreal should also be
very strong. Philadelphia can go a long way on Steve
Carlton’s arm , but I don’t believe that will take them far
enough.
National League West: This will be wide open because no
one is strong enough to come forw ard and take it. San Diego
is counting too much on Steve Garvey, and LA is counting too
much an Albuquerque. Atlanta does not have much pitching
beyond Phil Niekro, and San Francisco has lost Reggie Smith
and Joe Morgan. But I’ll take toe Giants as the best off in that
pack.

But I will not let that cloud my judgment. Each of toe above
w riters picked his favorite team s to win the respective divi­
sions. I will be more objective.
American League E ast: Sorry Billy, not this tone. The
Yankees will be struggling to finish third. This will be a battle
between Baltimore’s balance and Milwaukee’s power. I
would have to give the edge to Baltimore, only because the
Brewers pitching is falling fast.
American League West: The weakest of all the m ajor
league’s divisions will be a battle of the mediocre. California
is on the way out, Chicago has swiss cheese for defense, and
Kansas City has forgotten how to win. I will go out on a limb
(maybe a twig) and pick Seattle.
National League E ast: The Phillies have lost all of their
once great pitching. With only Carlton remaining to carry
them, look for the Cardinals and Expos to battle it out to
perhaps the end of the season. I choose toe Expos because
they have better pitching.
National League West: My heart says “goB raves,” butm y
head says, “not again.’’ This is the m ost balanced league
with only one certain thing — the Dodgers will not win it. The
Padres seem to have the best balance that may just squeak
them by the Braves and Giants. Speaking with my brain, I’ll
take the Padres.

WSU assistant chosen
as Cougars' new coach

PULLMAN, Wash. — Len Stevens was named today to
replace George Raveling as Washington State University’s
head basketball coach, WSU officials announced.
Raveling announced Monday he was leaving to take over
the basketball program a t the University of Iowa.
Stevens has been Raveling’s assistant for the past two
years and was Raveling’s choice for the top job at WSU.
Raveling, Pacific 10 Conference Coach of the Year, said the
decision to leave Washington State after 11 years was “the
hargest I’ve ever made in athletics.”
He replaces Lute Olson, who accepted a s im ilar position
last Tuesday a t toe University of Arizona.
There are many reasons for his decision to accept Iowa
Athletic Director Bump Elliott’s offer, Raveling said. Ravel­
ing, 45, reportedly m et with Elliott for six hours last Friday
in Colorado.
“There was some financial consideration,” he said Mon­
day evening, as he prepared to board a private je t in
Pullman, Wash., for toe flight to Iowa. “The opportunities to
win are greater there, and the geographies are better. ”
The Iowa package is believed to be in the neighborhood of
$200,000 a year for five years. His annual salary a t WSU was
$46,500, but was bolstered by revenues from a successful
sum m er basketball cam p that netted as much as $100,000.
When asked for a recommendation on someone to replace
him, Raveling said he urged Jankovich to consider Stevens,
the former head coach a t St. M artin’s College in Lacey,
Wash.
“The kids would like th at,” Raveling said of Stevens’ selec­
tion. Stevens was in his second year as a Cougar assistant
coach.

a junior high physical education class. He wasn’t very good,
