ByM ariaK han Staff w riter The 100-150 parking space extension af­ forded by tiie destruction of the WigWam Lodge will be ready for use sometime this sum m er, according to the associate vice president for business affairs. “Realistically, we’ll probably get it all done this sum m er,” Bill Phelps said. “I’d like to get it done sooner, but the planning departm ent is sm all and they’ve got a lot of backlog.” He said the cleared space created by the dozing of the three wood-framed teepee structures wifi be used to extend Lot 40, which is bordered by Apache Boulevard and R ural Road, rath er than establishing it as a separate lot. However, Phelps added, the designation of the lot, including the newly created spaces, m ay be changed. That possibility is contingent on a new overall parking plan which is currently being drawn up by the Parking Services Committee. He said the virtually empty WigWam lot will have to be leveled, curbed, lighted, sur­ faced and striped before it would be con­ sidered a usable parking facility. However, before proceeding with those steps, the plan­ ning departm ent m ust design the new lot. Under this new legislation it would lower youth minimum wage to <2.50. I feel th a t this kind of legislation is totally unfair to stu d en to ^to y M tfw h o to w iffii« to w o rk . Some economists and others argue that lowering minimum wage wiBhelp out depressed fast-food businesses and this bill also will reduce unemployment among American youth. Recently, businesses received m assive new tax break under Reaganomics. Ju st how many breaks are we to give them ? % agree that this bill probably will reduce unemployment among American youth. But unemployment among adults will eventually will go up because will take advantage of cheap labor by hiring American youth. Why pay others $5 an hour, when you could hire someone else for 12.50? America has grown this far because of our educational system. This kind of bill will ju st discourage students like myself from getting further education. Hey I’d assign stories and accept free passes to all the spor­ ting events in town. Easy as shooting a free throw. I had planned on giving the most ink to the winning teams in the athletic depart­ ment. People would much rather read about winners than losers. Sure I would cover the losing team s, but the winners would get the most coverage. But there a re no losing programs a t ASU. No m a tte r' how many pages I have to cover this campus, it isn’t enough. Now I knew Quit ASU had ex- cellent athletic program s, but it does hit the point of disbelief. Take a look a t all the pro­ grams that are winners. • The ASU football team lost its last two regular-seas«») games and still finished sixth in the country. • The volleyball team had an excellent year qualifing for the NCAA tournam ent. • The wrestling team went into the year with high hopes, but a rash of injuries ruined them. Still, Gary Bohay finished second in the nation in the NCAA tourney. • The ASU m en’s basketbidl team finished the year strongly and seem to have turned the program around. • The women’s basketball team is currently in the NCAA tourney and if they can upset Southern Cal on Thursday they have a good shot a t making it to the final four. • Both men’s and women’s track team s have moved up in the top ten in the nation. • The women’s gym nastics team is ranked first in the n atio n . • The men’s gymnastics team finished second in the conference and should finish in the top ten in the nation. • The ASU baseball program is the best in the nation. This year they are struggling through a rebuilding year, but next y ear—look out. • The archery team has na­ tional cham pions every year. • Both men’s and women’s swimming team s are among the best in the natioo. And I have not begun to go into the club sports. Trying to .satisfy all of these coaches and athletes is impossible. The ASU athletic departm ent is the second best overall in the nation year in and year out. Unfortunately the best overall athletic program is also in the sam e conference. UCLA is sometimes too good. But it is not just UCLA that offers tough competition for the Sun Devils, but the e n tire P acific 10 and W estern Athletic Association conferences. The Pac-10 and the WCAA have more national cham­ pionships than any other conference. The battle for the conference champion­ ship might as well be the bat­ tle for the national title. And when I arrive a t the State P ress office today, the phone will be ringing off the wall as coaches of winning team s «mil to tell me I didn’t mention them.
