Snow Devil bus crashes en route to ski trip
Cuts, frostbite suffered
five miles from slopes
By Mike Humphreys and Sandy Sistek
Staff w riters
' A Trailways bus carrying 46 m em bers of the Snow Devil
Ski Club overturned into a ditch early Saturday morning out
side of Telluride, Colorado, leaving students with cuts,
bruises and one case of frostbite.
According to Ann Hughes, an em ergency medical techni
cian in Colorado, die bus slid off an ice-covered road and
landed on its side in a ditch five m iles south of Telluride on
Colorado Highway 145, on a stretch of road called “Lawson
Hill.”
Hughes, along with other em ergency personnel responding
to the accident, said there w ere no serious injuries.
Colorado State Trooper Al Tebrink said heavy snow and
high winds were prevailing a t the tim e of the accident. He ad
ded roads were covered with snow and ice in many spots
amid “generally rotten w eather.”
Tebrink said the bus was traveling down Lawson Hill when
the driver was forced off the road to avoid an oncoming vehi
cle which was sliding into the wrong lane.
He said the bus turned over and lay against a snow bank on
its right side.
According to club m em ber Sun Shawl, a junior manage
ment m ajor, the bus left F riday evening a t 7:30 for a threeday trip and had been traveling all night. The accident occur
red at 7:15 the next morning.
“It is a 12-hour drive to Telluride and we had been driving
all night when it happened,” she said. “The bus swerved to
the right and flipped onto its side in to a ditch.”
She said the windows shattered and passengers were
thrown to one side of the bus.
Shawl said the Telluride tran sit system transported
members of the ASU club to the slopes in order to continue
with the trip.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a return to a landm ark libel
case, the Supreme Court left intact Tuesday a $400,000 award
to a Chicago lawyer falsely accused of being a Communist in
a John Birch Society magazine.
The case began in 1968, when Chicago police Officer
Richard Nucdo shot and killed Ronald Nelson. 17. and
lawyer Elm er Gertz was hired by the Nelson family to help
sueNuccio.
American Opinion, a magazine affiliated with the John
Birch Society,' published an April 1960 article which said Nuccio was being “railroaded” as part of a Communist con

The magazine, published by Robert Welch Inc., accused
Gertz of being a Communist who was taking part in a con

A jury awarded Gertz $50,000 in a 1970 libel suit based on an
Illinois law that said it was autom atically libelous to falsely
accuse someone of being a Communist.

their lifetime.
The purpose of ABS is to maintain an ade
quate community blood supply to assure
blood will be readily available if needed.
Anyone in good health, age 17 to 66 and
weighing at least 110 pounds is eligible to
donate. Women who are or who have been
pregnant within the past six weeks cannot
donate.
According to Fort, a single unit of blood
can be broken down into components and be
used by as many as three patients. For ex
ample, a burn victim may receive the
plasm a and a leukemia patient can use the
blood platelets.
Arizona Blood Services is the sole supplier
of blood and blood components to all 52
hospitals throughout eight Arizona counties
and "the Im perial Valley area of
southeastern California.
Donations will be taken in the MU Cochise
Room and in a mobile van adjacent to Danforth Chapel each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Additional sites will be set up in the dor

According to ' Chris Moffatt, a donor

Sara Fort, director of donor resources for

“Virtually everyone would be willing to

Crisis center offers alternatives to abortion
By D w u t H itfth w

Many women who become pregnant with an unwanted
child think th at abortion is the only answer.
But accorthng to Lisa Sutton, director of the new Crisis
Pregnancy Center in Tempe, there are other alternatives,
and the center was started to provide them, free of charge.
‘‘M ostwom entbink abortion is a quick, easy solution,” she
said. “But abortion dim es do not teO them the bad effects of

The center does many things, including giving pregnancy
tests, helping the women find a job and a place to live.
The idea behind the center is th at “having the baby is the
safest and m ast natural alternative,” Sutton said.
“Many women think th at after the abortion, they are never
going to think they were even pregnant,” she said. “But there
are trem endous psychological and physical repercussions.

KAET to broadcast heart operation tonight

Although heart operations have evolved
from im possible to common over the past 40
years, they still intim idate prospective pa
tients.
But tonight KAET-TV and the Arizona
H eart Institute will attem pt to reduce the
m ystique of heart operations by providing
viewers in about SO public television outlet
cities the opportunity to see a Valley doctor
surgery live on televi-
The operation takes about 90 minutes, but
the show runs two hours because it also will
show the surgical team grafting — a pro
cedure in which a section of vein is
transplanted from one p art of the body to
another — from the patient’s leg to his
heart, according to KAET Public Relations
D irector Kathy Banfieki.
Bob Ellis, general m anager of KAET,
said, “We feel there will he people viewing
the program who have put off this type of
surgery for many reasons, but mainly
because they sim ply could not face the
thought of surgery.”
Because the operating room is a com
pletely sterilized environment, all KAET’s
equipment m ust be sterilized.
“Every piece of equipment needed for the
production m ust be swabbed down with
alcohol,” said KAET Engineering Super
visor Ernie Flotto. “There’s a line near Ore
operating rooms which cannot be crossed
unless you’ve scrubbed down, so we m ust
deliver the equipment to the line, scrub
down the equipment as well as ourselves
and then move it across the Hne.”
The operating room is equipped with three
cam eras: one directly over die operating
table to allow viewers to follow along with
the doctor as he narrates, one hand-held
cam era enabling other members of the
surgical team to explain duties and identity
apparatus used during the procedure, and
one high atop the operating room.
iw u> With Your H eart,” a
month-long project undertaken by KAET to
inform the public about all aspects of heart
attacks, culm inates tonight a t 7 p.m ., when,
for the first tim e, opendieart surgery will be
perform ed on live television.
Dr. Edw ard Diethrich, medical director
of AHI, will perform the operation at S t
Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix.
Viewers will be guided through the opera
tion by cardiologist Sam Kinard, M.D., and
Rick D’Alli, the science editor of KAET’s
“Horizon” program , while Diethrich nar
rates from the operating room.
They also will have the opportunity to
phone in questions while the surgery is in
progress.
The station will follow the patient into the
intensive care unit after the operation, and
will interrupt regular programming about
three hours later to check the patient’s pro
gress from his ro an .

L. William Seidman, dean of the ASU College of Business
Administration and co-chairman of a White House con
ference on productivity, said the conference will help in re
establishing the United States as a competitive industrial na
tion.
The conference was mandated by Congress to bring
together representatives of business, labor, academ ic,
government and private organizations to develop recommen
dations for stimulating productivity in the United States.
According to Seidman, who assum ed the cochairm an posi
tion last week, the conference has a specific concern.
“The fundamental issue is what needs to be done to im
prove U.S. productivity to make us more competitive in
world industry and to improve our standard of living,” he
said.
A series of four pre-conferences, chaired by Seidman, will
be presented prior to the main conference scheduled to be
held in October in Washington, D.C.
Seidman said the pre-conferences will cover a variety of
topics including the accumulation of capital, private sector
productivity, research development and technology and the
role at government in productivity.
The series of pre-conferences will begin in April, Seidman
said. Each will be held in a different regional area, although
specific locations have not been decided upon. He added that
one of the pre-conferences “may beheld in Phoenix.”

:o-chair of national conference
“The public will be invited to the pre-conferences,’’ Seidm ansaid.
“We have a productivity institute here (at ASU),” he said.
“I would think they would be involved as well as others with
appropriate backgrounds.’’
Seidman said the overall effectiveness of the conference
will be reflected in changes in federal laws and in the private
sector.
The legislation enacted to establish the conference pro
vides that a report of the recommendations generated from
the conference be sent to President Reagan (who will be in
attendance) within 120 days after the conference closes.
The president will send his own recommendations to Con
gress within 120 days of the time he receives the report.
Seidman said “acknowledged authorities” will report the
findings of the pre-conferences at the final conference.
In addition, there is a possibility that a media campaign,
sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters, will
N presented, according to Seidman. P a rt of that campaign
may include the televising of the final conference.
Seidman said he knows of no previous White House con
ference on productivity, although others have been held on
such topics as inflation, Social Security, science and
technology.
The chairm an of the conference is William E. Simon, who
served as secretary of the Treasury during the Nixon and
Ford adm inistrations. Simon heads the National Productivi
ty Advisory Council, of which Seidman also is a member.

Devils find outthat they can win
without superstar Scott's buckets
B y Ken Sain
Sports editor
B yron Scott casts a tall shadow.
And that shadow’s nam e is Brock Brunkhorst. Scott found
him self being followed ‘on Saturday night as the ASU basket
ball team defeated Arizona 77-70.
The Wildcats used a bax-and-one, a defense designed to
lim it a player of superstar stature. One player, Brunkhorst,
would play a man-to-man defense on the. other team ’s
superstar, Scott. The other four players would ¡day a box
zone around the bask et
The Cats, 3-19, used the technique to perfection, but could
not stop the rest of the team .
The strategy did lim it Scott to only six points, but Scott took
advantage of the defense to open up shots for his team m ates.
“I thought Byron reacted very w ell,” ASU Head Coach Bob
Weinhauer said. “He should accept it as a compliment to his
ability, and work hard to open up shots for the other people.
“We expected somebody to use it somewhere down the
line.”
.. - i- ..
. V;
Two of Scott’s points cam e by way of the free throw line.
Another two cam e on a slam dunk. Scott was one for five
from the field in the first half.
The Devils fell behind 7-2 after the first three minutes of the
game. But by midway through the first half, ASU was able to
puU to a 19-18 deficit.
Walt Stone took up some of the sewing slack by scoring 10
points in the first half to lead the team . Paid Williams added
eight firsth alf points. ASU took a 33-30 lead into the locker
room a t the half.
In the second half Chris Beasley and Williams combined
for six early points to put the Devils up 41-35. The Cats con
tinued to battle back, and scored six straight points to pun to
within three points, 48-45, with 13 minutes left.
The Sun Devils were able to hit their free throws late in the
game to prevent a comeback by the Cats.
“We were 18 for 20 from the free throw line, until the game
was already decided,” Weinhauer said. “We did not want to
be Arizona’s number one (win) in the Pac-10.”
The Devils have won five of their last six games, including
three straight. Guard Chris Beasley and center Jim Deines
were inserted into the starting line-up sue games ago.
Beasley has averaged 14 points a gam e since he becam e a
starter.
ASU is currently in fourth place in the Pacific 10 Con
ference. Weinhauer feels that if the Devils are able to win
five of their last six games, they could receive a NCAA Tour
nament bid.
The NCAA will invite 52 team s to the post-season tourna
ment.
