So we don’t mind when people don't come out. Oqr publicity is mostly word-of-mouth anyway, so we’ll soe them next tim e.” Scott-Heron’s mind seem s always focused on the future. “Since I e ra ’t af fect yesterday, I’m interested in af fecting tomorrow, " b e said. For example, he w rote the aong “ 1980“ in 1978. But as he «plained, “You either got to stay ahead or gat behind.” 8tih, he reoHaes the importance of the past, especially as it relates to m usk. Speaking about jasx m usk, wMch has influenced Mm Mrongiy. he conjectured why a wider audience cannot ap preciate the maro “avant-garde” idiom. “Yen can’t put a six-year-old Md in the seventh grade without Mm knowing what happened before that,” he raid. “If you’re going to listen to John Col trane, you can’t sta rt with ‘Ohm’ or ‘Africa Brasa.' You have to have the background of Mm with Miles (Davis) and Ms early quartets. “Som eone without a background can not get on when the train (Trane) is go ing full speed,” ha added. “ If you listen to the progression, it helps you catch on. The only problem is that we lack the incentive to educate people about the m usk.’’ He added that he listens mostly to the m usk of prograaMve musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Julius Hemphill and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. From that, it is easy to speculate Scott-Heron’s feelings about disco. “WeH, people have always liked to dance,” he said. “But anything as aim less as that should not dominate people's hves." The thing about Scott-Heron’s music is that you can dance to it, as wail as listen to it for a massage that goes a bit deeper than Teddy Pendergrass' hot oil. And there aro a m yriad of messages that Scott-Heroa projects. “ If I had only ana message, I’d have only one song,” he added. “There’s f^ S U M N V SUNJUNS Light, bright, comfort-loving canvas SUNJUNS* in now sun-time stylos from America's quality shoemaker SU N JU N S— only by BASS ’ W oman’s M an's THE BACKDOOR SHOE SHOP “W e Carry Many Stylos of Fam ous Brand Shoos” 787 S . Some athletes must undeserv ingly deal with this stereotype such as former ASU gridder Don Hendricks who will graduate this May with four years of football, four years of college and a S.0 grade paint average under his belt. When he was recruited he was offered a five-year scholarship and encouraged to take Ms education slowly in order to devote more time to athletics, said Hendricks. “I knew from day one that I wanted to finish my education in four years. I never spoke to John Rehfield. I went to my own counselors, picked my own classes and made out my own schedules.” Hendricks, a business manage ment major, attended Brother Rice High School in MicMgan where he was required to wear a tie and jacket every day and discipline was rigidly enforced. . He played football at Brother Rice, leading his team to state victories at quarterback his junior and senior years. His high school coach A! Fracassa, who demanded demanded academic excellence of his players, was of fered the position as head offen sive coordinator a t Michigan State when Darryl Rogers and Ms men came to ASU, but turned it down to rem ain at Brother Rice. “The discipline that Frank Kush expected on the field was reflected in my studying,” said Hendricks. “It took a lot of selfmotivation, but I knew exactly what I had to do. The reason is obvious and the exposure is the reason. Anderson, the editor of the Arizona Silver Bek, who along with the Globe Chamber of Commerce invited Ruiz, said he didn't believe Ruiz’s presence and the publicity about her “non-marathons” would detract from the Globe race. Boston Athletic Association officials, the- sponsors of the Boston Marathon, said they proved "beyond a shadow of a reasonable doubt” that Ruiz did not complete the Boston run. “ I don’t think so because we run a very tight ship here.” Sinpe the invitation was extended, Anderson said he has received inquiries from Dallas and other parts of the country. “There are two or three considerations” why Ruiz was invited Anderson said. “One was that she is very much in the news and would give us some favorable publici ty...If she really is a m arathoner her appearance could benefit both of us.” If she accepted the invitation, Ruiz would receive $1,900 cash for running the up-and-down course in 3:16.54, which would better the old course m ark set by Linda Donkelaar by 12-minutes, 36 seconds. With Ruiz, Anderson is expecting “upwards of 500” runners. “W e're just barely getting up to 150 runners,” Ander son said. “It's a tough course, (for its type) probably the toughest in Arizona. “We don’t run it as a qualifier for Boston, that’s for sure.” The highest men’s finisher, Dr. Tom Rotkiss of Tuc son, a two-time Globe winner, has run the course in 2:40.39. “No we really haven’t had a ‘name’ male runner but we have had a fine runner in Rotkiss," Anderson said. “The more publicity we get (from Ruiz), the more chance we have to get fast runners. ” For Ruiz to collect her money, she must run the specified time or under, Anderson said, and marathon money will not be used to bring her to Arizona although transportation could be arranged for her. “No, that’s (paying Ruiz’s way to Globe) not included. If she werfe to communicate to us, 'yes, I can run,' I have a source (of transportation). ” The Globe course starts outside of the San Carlos reservation then meets U.S. 70 and progresses to U.S. 60 east to Globe High School. May 2,1960______________ _______________ _______________ N e w error b e g in s Before I crack the books I bought last January, I'd like to reflect on the 197940 school year just a little b it As far as sports goes, to say it was an active and interesting year is the understatement of the decade. Never before has the sports program of this Universi ty so occupied the minds of the campus community — and in fact the nation. I thought about using this space to recap the top 10 sports stories of the year. But I think we’ve just about beat to death the off-fieid events of the ASU athletic pro gram — to the point where you are as tired of hearing about them as I am of writing them. So what I would like to do is stick to the fields and the gyms and recall the top 10 games and events of the year These are the things you saw unfold in front of you, the moments you remember. No. 1 — Washington football game, Oct. IX There cer tainly hasn’t been a more emotional athletic event in Sun Devil history, but if you remember the game, there haven’t been too many better football games either. The Huskies came into Sun Devil Stadium the No. 7 ranked football team in America and got caught up in the swirl of emotion of Frank Kush’s firing. ASU won the game 12-7. The game itself featured a m asterful defensive effort by the Sun Devils and the sight of Kush being carried on to and off of the field will stick with Sun Devil fans always. * , No. 2 — UCLA basketball game. Feb. 18. The Sun Devils moved back into the Pac-10 lead with a 90-82 win over the Bruins, who later advanced to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament. The Devils beat UCLA for the second time during the season, only the second time the Bruins had ever been swept. The game was televised on the Pac-10 network throughout the West Coast and the Sun Devil fans showed they can be as vocal as any in the conference. No. 3—San Angel Track Classic. April X This event on a beautiful spring day featured one of the best collection of athletes ever to grace the ASU campus. World-class athletes such as Houston McTear, A1 Feuerbach, Mike Tully and Dwayne Evans, to name a few, enjoyed a day in the sun at the first annual meet, which promises to grow in the future. No. 4—Loyola M arymeaat basketball game, March 7. The Sun Devils won an impressive 90-71 game over the Lions in the first round of the NCAA tourney in the Ac tivity Center. Ned Wulk’s team scared the most one-sided win in the entire NCAA tournament and capped a 22-7 season The Devils lost to Ohio State in the next round. No. 5 — Iowa State wrestling meet, Nov. 29. The Sun Devils won a match Coach Bobby Douglas called their biggest ever by beating perennial power Iowa State 84-18 in the Activity Center. No. 8 — Stanford baseball game. March X The Sun Devils opened “Six P ac” play with a 34-2 blasting of the then No. 1 team in the country. ASU is in the m idst of the conference season now, involved in a tight race but challenging for the championship. No. 7 — Utah State football game, O ct 27. This ana ranks up there far two things that stand out in my mind. First, it was another of those beautiful afternoons that Arizona is famous for, and second, Mark Malone’s school record 98-yard run from scrimmage. ASU woo U« sam e 28-14 an regional television, but again had to forfeit because of ineligibility. Na. 8 — Southwest Cap gymnastics, rob. 28. This was the prem ier gymnastics event of the season a t the Ac tivity Center. It marked the first Arizona performance of world-clam gymnast and Sun Devil assistant coach Kurt Thomas. The ASU women won while the men finished second to Indiana State. No. 9 — UA basketball gaaae at TUcsea, Jan. 28. The ASU team dealt the 'Cats their worst loas ever a t McKale Center with a 97-72 win. ASU did what college basketball team s have found almost impossible — beat an opponent three times te a «ingle season. The feat is even more impressive when you do it to your arch-rival. Na. 18 — UA featbag game, Nov. 84. This one is in cluded for two reasons — to prove that my glasses have no maroon and gold tint to them and because it was one of the more exciting games in the intrastate rivalry. UA won the game 27-24 with a late field goal. The Wildcats advanced to the Fiesta Bowl where they lost to Pittsburgh. So those are the memories that stick out in my mind. I’ve spent a lot of hours in the Activity Center and on the various athletic fields that I probably should have spent studying or accomplishing something. But I wouldn’t give up a single minute of it. I’ve been fortunate to work under a talented and enthusiastic sports editor this spring. We’ve tried to bring you a different lock a t ASU sports, and I’ll be back next fall to do more of the sam e and to in stitute some new features and ideas I hope you’ll enjoy. Today will be the garden-variety student’s chance to be a prime-time prim a or don na. That’s Incredible, an ABC ripoff of NBC’s Real People, will be filming part of the Sun Devil gymnastics team go through an “incredible” feat in the men’s P.E. gym. “We would appreciate a large, noisy crowd for the taping,” said ASU men’s coach Don Robinson, who will orchestrate the stunt. “ It’s the average student’s chance to be on television. ” Robinson said the television ap pearance will benefit ASU through the exposure and ABC will also put money into the gym nastics fund. The stunt consists of a large group of people flipping onto a sm all table and staying there. The taping begins around noon in P.E. West and the public is in vited. This will be the second na tionally televised, prime tim e ap pearance for the Sun Devil gym nastics team.
