B u r THCy DON'T*AN yM ORB ; Seeing the future in Iran's past Ed itor’s note: this is the second and last a rtic le on “ Understanding Iran." There is in S U ’ite Islam a history both sacred and secular of oppres sion that must be opposed. The conflict has been less between S U ’ite and Sunni M uslim s than between Persians (and other Muslim m inorities) and central governments. There is a specific S U ’ite world view of opposition of Sunni Caliphs, Persian Shahs, Western oil companies, intelligence agencies and diplomats who in the past have copiously m aUpulatsd and interfered in the national destiny of the Persian people. Tho two Pahlavi Shahs, who ruled Iran from UBS to I f , preferred a HHitin— i monarchy. The traditional offices of divine kingship were thereby altered to accomodate the modernisation and westernisation that swept die Middto E a st in the twentieth century to acmeve modernization, the Pahlavi ¡»nans exploited the strategic importance of Iran as a buffer between the Ea st and W est The chief quid pro quo for Western technology has been oil—and the Shahs’ political frtandridp. Beth nationalists and traditional S U ’ite Muslims rw sntsil the 8hahs’ heavy handed control of Iranian society. The recently deposed Shah welcomed considerable Western—par ticularly Am erican influence and support Western business suits replaced the traditional robes and hate. Women were encouraged not to wear the traditional chadors (veil) and peasant gown. To fortify U s power, the Shah termed a secret police force known as S A V A K In 1M7. Trained by the CIA, FB I, and a form er Chicago pohco chief, SA V A K became the Stub’s terror against U s own people at home and abroad. Reprissls were swift and certain. Continued rsfonuo in education, health cars and law were always at the rip e a si of tradMtenallrmn. B y the late 70s, it was possible for foreign analysts, especially those whose governments had a stabs in the Shah, to see U s reform as heavy-handed but enlightened; Iran was secure Inside, those who suf fered the rapid changes were ripe for revolution. As it had in ths past, SM’tte Islam became the laUfying Ideology of oppstitton to repression and fnrUtei involvement in Persian affairs. Perhaps it aO canse too fast. It csrtaiaiy cam e with wwelsnting im perious force. Than each hopeful met with a six-person editorial board. A p parently, advocacy advocates do not take their respon sibility lightly ASASU President Susie Eastridge said she agrees with the Tucson policy, which she says “ helps the d o c torate.” She said a State Press endorsement would give a can didate “ more credibility.” She also said ‘ i t would he hard to measure, but I think it (endorsement for an op ponent) would be a liability.” The fact that a veteran campaigner in ASASU ejection battlefields finds a newspaper endorsem ent either a source of credibility or a cam paign liabhty Is positive proof that newspapers do not belong on a Hot of en dorsements. A candidate’s credibility o r liability should be based on U s or her. ability, not the decision of a fa lli ble editor or editorial board. There are some pretty loony reasons to vote for a can didate— including the cofors on a poster and such an apathetic electorate is bound to sleet a bim bo once in a while. Perhaps endorsements can prevent such blind deci sions. But that isn’t enough to overcom e our grave philosophical reser vations. The State Press isn’t going to interfere with a citiasns’ right to be governed by incom petents. l* r* © d » te fo e ftfe s and that's the way it is!'
