A SU would not get any ef the proceede because the prism baa been designated by the state as the beneficiary of the land, said G ary Smith, a state Land Department official. But Chuck Adame, legal nwmealnr. for the Arisons Board e f Regents, said he wee not aware tbs prism would receive the revenue from the land when the request for the land was filed. “W e know that ASU would have to pay rent, but I don't think we ween aware that the prism was the beneficiary,’' Adame m id. The regents filed an institutional taking (a re quest to lease the land) with the governor’s office several months ago. The proposal originated last summ er when the regents, who wanted to consolidate the ASU and U A farm s, determined that the Waddell Ranch site fiewest Phoenix met the mdversitiee’ made. The declaim *> let ASU lease the land Is being delayed by a lawsuit cto Baagtag the legality of the original land owhango. The Waddell Rand) land, which was owned by Caterpillar L ift Trucks, was traded for state-owned land in the White Tanks a rm west of Phoenix. Smith eakl the decishm to lease the land to ASU is "a n hold” until the litigation is resolved. “ It is not prudent to issue an institutional taking and then find out the exchange is void,” Smith said. “ Butooce the litigation is squared away, the institutional taking by ASU would very likely h iv e a favorable recommendation." ASU has requested to lease approxim ately 1,800 acres adjacent to the prison site. Sm ith said farm land in the surroun ding area rents for 100 to I N par acre annually. Regents’ executive coordinator Robert Huff said the site “ seemed to be a gbod place to con solidate agricultural research.” “ B uttf that piece of land ia not available, we w ill look for something ehm. The regents’ plan for tbs consetidatim of the aftricriteral farm s is a long term plan. It "is not anything that w ill coma crashing down around our sixndders,” Huff said. Howeve r, Adam s said it would be poarible to loom another piece of state-owned land where ASU could be named the beneficiary. Any presidency must uphold certain designated and undesignated responsibilities, such as an attempt at balancing the nation’s astronomical budget, or safeguarding the U.S. m ilitary status. These are deeipiated responsibilities. Lesdersfaip, though, falls within the undesignsted category. In today’s world, the presidency itself is obligated to present a father — nay, a God-like — image to the Am erican people, and imagea of this sort are sustained through die deifying of pest presidents such as Washington mid Lincoln. It is, on the face of it, quite absurd to expect one chosen r epresentative to be all thing« to a ll people. Neither should the President try. A president earns his country’s r espect through U s and skillftil execution of the tasks he is reqidred to fulfill, as dictated by toe Constitution. When Am erica its Judgement of the President on the ha«hi of charism atic appeal, upon U s ability to “ lead” rather d»«n an impassioned evaluation of some of the tasks described above, the choice is a dubious one. The persistent cry far leader sh ip in the face of recent international events has been voiced by many as a ca ll to war. If true, as history seems to indicate, pitohc approval of presidents has skyrocketed when plans of mortal combat are announced and, except for other rare occasions, rem ains the only criterion for wide spread public approval. F o r instance, Fran klin Roosevelt's brilliant restoration of the Am erican capitalistic economy was applauded by m any, but jeered heartily by a sim ilar multitude, often with cries of “ S o cia list” It is essential to have pride in one’s country and one’s president. However, the current emotional dependence upon the office bodes ill in maintaining and strengthen!!« national morale. It removes the actual problem — the unpredictability of foreign affairs — from the spotlight where it belongs in order for a viable stability to be reached. Only through a soul-scarring search can Am erica rediscover itself. Only through the rediscovery of its pride in its self-reliance and w ill can it endure greet hardship with determination, rather than alibis. To scream at the father to D .C . m ay be beeutifaUy cathartic, but Ineffectual. The road ahead for Am erica and its people, as the road behind once was, must be forged out of courage and persistence. Nothing less w ill bear fruit — — perfsny the sour diatribes currently directed toward the President. But then again, courage and persistence has always embodied and exemplified Am erica. Letters Where is sorority row? Editor: Where is sorority “ row” ? It certainly be found an the A SU campus. T V s University is now 37,500 students strong, and yet shy die proper facilities for its sororities. The need for fraternity housing r eceived attention to the early M ’s with the building of Addphi D rive. The sum m er of ’61 marked the construction of Alpha Drive. Here it is, 1000, and ASU sororities are exactly where they began to ISM, with the comple tion of Palo Verde Main. A SU ’s housing shortage is anothar consideration. The hous ing office has 2,500 new ap plicants to fill the 1,000 vacancies for next fa ll. Juat imagine how m any m ore «paces would be open if the sororities were to be taken out of Palo Verde Mato. Each floor bouses «7 giris. There are twelve floors. I would be more than happy to give up my space to the process of building a “ row” for the sororities. I contend that we are equally deserving of the tam e advan tages the University has provided for the fraternities a ll these years. A dormitory is hardly the respectable destination for a strong body of organised in dividuals. Considerations have been given to building a satellite M em orial Union, a science library, and a multi-level parking garage. I would like to make the addition of planning a “ raw” for sorority housing. I fe d strongly that such a development is essential to m atching our U n iv e rsity ’s reputation. The longer we ignore the issue, the more likely the sororities w ill be restricted by dorm itory living indefinitely. I propose that the planning of a sorority raw be given serious con sideration to the future growth of ASU. Afieea L.Sudth W hy is he so popular? P layers’ union boas M arvin M iller and Ray Grebey, the chief negotiator for the owners, are in the m kkt of talks aim ed at form ulating a new four-year basic agreement and avoiding a threatened players’ strike. The Federal Mediation and Con ciliation Service, at the owners’ request, Thursday agreed to became involved in the talks. The fe d e ra lly m ediated meeting w ill take place Sunday in Palm Springs, C alif., said Kennedy E . Moffett, deputy (ire cto ro f the service. M ille r said the ta& s so far have been stalled by owners’ demands that should not even be an the table. “They cam e in with a demand that no player can be offered more than a one-year contract if he has loss than five years service,” M ilw w r said. “ They don't have to offer more than that now. They want us to take over m anagem ent’s respon sibility.” M iller said it is for a sim ilar reason that owners are seeking a change hi the free agency system. The owners, he said, want to “ change free agency to a trade. The free agent in some cir cumstances could not be signed by a club unless that d u b gives u p s regular.” Such a change would "break the back of the free agency system, and the savings to the owners would be in the tens of m illions of dollars, " M illar said. Grebey has rsg sa teily refused to comment on the specifics of the negotiations, but said the owners see no reassn why the season should not open on time, A p r il», even U an agreement has not been reached. The players, though, fear that if they perform without a contract, the owners could declare an hnpasse end Piper w ill wafe into the sea . Thomas said he’ll probably return to ASU next year, and said he is looking for a house in Arizona. “ I’D pretty much play it by ear and see how long I want to com pete. When I’m finished, I’m finished.” Arizona could be considered one of the saving graces far the 12-year old sensation. Thomas said be was getting “ stale” at In diana State, where he competed for four years, and that he “ needed a new group of guys to work out with.” But with the boycott, the edges have been shaved a Dttle from the medals won and the accolades rained down. Gym nastics is a guiding light to Thomas, obviously. Where would he be without a blur to twist bn? “ I don’t know. I don’t even know if I would have gone to col lege. I definitely wouldn’t have had the money to go. It’s been so much a part of m y life, I have no idea where I would be now. ” Gym nastics has made Thomas, and vice-versa. A ctu a lly , Thomas might be getting the short eod of tha stick. But it has provided him with travel and op portunities he probably would not have had. C a ll it a draw. Question: V K u rt Thomas were in cap and gown and graduating from high school, how many talent scouts out there would be waiting at the end of the aisle with a sign-on-tbe-dotted-line scholarship offer? The country is Thomas was not recruited out of high school, because “ I wasn’t that good.” But he wasn’t in sulted. He got a scholarship from ISU, and they get the perception award for the day. Now he’s good. The best — maybe. Despondently Thomas mufls over the fact of the Olym pic boycott. Thé thought brings paiaftd words. About politics, the answer is sim ple, “ I try to stay away from them.” The irony friend, is he’s staying away from something that is a ll but wiping away his Ufe-long goal — the Olym pic gold.
