Form er Iranian ambassador Fereydoun Hoveyda was forced to step speaking after approximately IS minutes of jeers and bedding by approximately 300 Iranian pro testers. Hoveyda served in the regime under Shah Mohammed Reas Pahlavi from 1871 to 1179. “We want to clarify to the a tta r two bodies involved whet the events were as we perceive them, and why the event was canceled,” Tum or said. Tam er said die letter was In the rough stages of (hraftim and refused to comment on the specific content of the letter. Meanwhile, a group of Iranian student have threatened that their protests "would be worse” if the official is brought back to speak. Wayne Smith, director of the ASASU Speaker’s Pro gram , said he is considering inviting Hoveyda to return. “The only reason that it (rescheduling the event) would be considered would be on principle,“ Smith said. “It was wrong that Hoveydah was denied the opportuni ty of free speech.’’ Saied Aikary, a member of the Iranian Students Association, said he did not know yet what the group would do, but that it would not allow Hoveyda to speak. “He doesn't represent the Iranian people,” Afkary said. “They (ASASU officials) have to respect the Ira nian student opinion ta re .” Doan of Students Leon Shell said if Hoveyda was asked to return, “any steps to insure that he would be able to spook would be taken.” “We don’t plan to see that (a cancellation) happen again.” But Afkary said even if more security measures were taken,‘I t doesn’t m atter to us. We would not allow it (bis speech)." Hoveyda’s speech was sponsored by the ASASU Special Events Board. Smith said the event cost ASASU approximately $3,000, and that more than $700 will have to be refunded to people who attended the speech. Hoveyda had planned to speak about the current state of affairs in Iran, his projection for that country’s future, and discum Us book, “The Fall of the Shah. ” Afkary said Hoveyda is supported by the CIA and is on his current speaking tour “Just looking for money ” frid ay March 7, 1900 stale press Tem ps, Arizona Voi. 62, No. 8 f Arizona State University G Copyright, Stato Proas, 1000 __________________________________________________________ tv tawJ Sun always rises Attorney general : A S A lobby illegal By BBsa Haggerty A legal opinion from the board itself says,” he added. If we have to move, they’ll probably buildup subdivisions all dose together," Clinton Pattea said Wednesday. "We don’t like living dose together." The propoeed Orme Dam, which m d d be built a t the con fluence of the Salt and Verde rivers, would flood 17,000 acros of the 25,000 allotted for the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation. The tribe would receive $33 million for the land aad 2,500 ad ditional acres from the Tonto Na tional Foroat P attea said the 2£00 acres would not be enough and the government-picked site would not be suitable. "All that land is Just rock. It would be like living on r>«iMihMt Mountain We, as In dians, don’t like to live like that," b e s a il Pattea added that the economic impact of Orme Dam would put 25 percent of the Indians on the site out of wash. “We have leas than 10 percent unemployment now. All these people who only drive a couple miles to work would have to find a job somewhere else,’'h e said. Rep. Daniel Poaches, RWindow Rock, said if the McDowell IwMana, whose 58» members occupy the land that would ba flooded, were Corced to leave, all Indiana would suffer tneetttccs. “It would eel back precedents for IndUn people that the American governm ent could push Indhms around,” P eaches said. Pattea sakl, "We’ve been living in that area for the past hundreds of years. We’ve been relocated and mislocated from all this years before, and 100 years later it’s happening again." Though the gin is anient pro posal of $33 million would yield $120,000 for every man, woman aad child on the reservation, Pat tea said the Indians are not in terested in the money. "Soma of us could live on that money all our Uvea, but a good m ajority of our people would never make it throu^i the first week or two,” P attm said. “Money is way dawn on our priority lis t Our priority is our land base and preser ving our life etyle.” Ponchos said the P o rt McDowell tribe is “very much com ssitted" to opposing Oram Dam. Bruce Babbitt took office in 1578, he told the McDowell Indians that Orme Dam would not be built without considering available a lte r natives. Peaches said the etudiee being made will not be completed until 1582. “Governor Babbitt committed himself to waiting for the recom mendations for alternatives. Now he says he is very much con vinced th a t som e kind of structure will be built a t the confluence of the Salt and Verde rivers," Peaches said. Some of the alternatives being studied include the building of higher, b ig p r aad "bettor" bridges, constructing the Rio Salado project, or raising ex isting dams te hold more water. Rio Salado would allow the Salt River to flow year-round and in cludes a system of parks and recreational facilities along the river banks through Phoenix. “I believe the general public ia not aware that Orme Dam is very costly. It will take five to eight years to build and cost between $260 million and $300 million. As opposed to that, there a te better alternatives to resist flooding,” Peaches said. Orme Dam eras originally pro posed in IMS as a part of the Cen tral Arizona Project to bold back w ater from the two rivers. In 1877 President Carter ordered Orme Dam be excluded from the pro ject and the CAP continue ody if alternatives to the dam were studied.
