The prepared statements of the m inority caucus (es) have bean lib e ra lly interspersed with rum ors and guesses disguised as fact. The “ report” of the Select Committee of the Faculty Senate contains ob vious inaccuracies and ignores inform ation that has been public record throughout the controversy. Aad the Faculty Association feels a need to get its oar in, but does so on the basis of another group’s un documented statem ent Statements emanating from tbs Law College indicate a w illingness to accuse, try and convict via the media. A ll of this seems very contradic tory to our accepted responsibility as members of the U niversity faculty. The applicants choseh fo r these posi tions were recommend to the president [of die U niversity] by the ICA board—and that is a m atter of record. Going after someone w ith statements of rum or, distor tions of truth, and half-truths is the very kind of reprehensible behavior we protested such a few short years ago when we thought someone else was doing it in the S ta n ky Is thto behavior new acceptable because it is turned in the other diiecdon? Regardless Of the direction this kind of action takes, it can be just ss destructive to the U niversity and the integrity of a ll of us In addition to violating our trust as scholars, it i to me we are getting our values a ll m essed up. O r maybe you have taken a clasa w ith a profeoaor who is senile but continues teaching in order to fu lfill his contract. A U niversity professor says these are Just two examples that have him concerned about the quality of teachers at ASU. “ Students should not put up w ith shitty teaching,” said P ro fessor Roger Addson. “They should shop for professors lik e they shop tor cars or shoes." Addson is chairm an of the L ib e ra l A rts Q uality of In struction Committee. He teaches history claeees at ASU and form erly taught a t Oxford and' H arvard universities. It is currently preparing to select outstanding tea ¿here tor the seventh annual Dean’s Quali ty Teaching Awards. “ Lots of horror stories come to m y m ind when you to ft about teacher quality here," Addson said. “ B u t how can students im prove the situation if they don’t do anything about it when they have a problem w ith a teacher?” Adels on said when a student does poorly in a class, it is a bad reflection on the teacher, not the student “ Teacher quality is dependent on the content of what is taught as w ell as the form in which it is taught,” Adelson said. “ We don’t want to te ll pro fessors what to teach. But teachers are not being sensitive enough to students’ needs and wants. “ There are teachers who do not hold office hours, and there are those who have their TAs (teaching assistants) grade the exams. How can a professor know if the students are learning if they don’t even grade their own exam s?” Addson said students should check out professors before sign ing up far classes in order to avoid problems or conflicts. “ If a student is thinking about signing up for a class, he should go and s it in on one or two of the lectures so he can see what the teacher is lik e .” Adeieen said there are courses of action a student can take when he has a profeaenr whom he does not fe d is doing a good Job. “ The firs t thing they should do is go to the ch air of the depart m ent If that doesn’t work, go to the dean of the college. “ I tru ly believe that if someone is net ddng the teaching they are paid to do, then I think the U niversity w ill do something in the University. Adelson said it takes a good teacher an hour or more to “ come down” after a morning of classes. “ Two or three classes w ill make a good teacher exhausted. These are teachers who get ex cited about the m aterial, and teaching for a couple of hours lite ra lly wears them out. ” R og er A delson about i t ” Adelson said students should also w rite letters to the Stale Press and mention names. “ There w ill be em barrass ment,” be said. “ But if the stu M esa man arrested for alleged exposure A 19-year-old M esa m an aw ay and contacted police, he allege dty exposed him self to a said. fftn a le A 8U student Wednesday She provided a description of and was prom ptly arrested by the suspect’s car, Including the A SU police. The Sun D evils opened 197*80 as an uncertain entity, a team floating on a raft of anim osity in a sea of adversity. Its captain was a coach who had one fin al year to show he could s till win, its crew had lost a few of the dissenters overhoard, but was fighting a new wave of opponents. The future looked m urky, at best But the Sun Devils surprisingly routed themselves in the right direction almost from day one of the season and — in turn — have given a beaten, battered and bruised athletic program a fresh start. It wasn’t an easy task to turn tfae D evils into an N CAA playoff team. Included in the rolling credits were some new faces, some old ones, and one other — forward K u rt Nim phius — who has seen anonyim ity, anim osity, adversity and fin a lly sue case, since coming to ASU in lf78. During his freshman year, no ooe knew who Nim phius was, f ine* Long Beach high school phpinsp Johnny Nash was the prise Sun D evil recruit that season. B y the tim e his sophom or e season rolled around, no one knew where he came from. Bob Baker, who h a n d « the P A at ASU home games, thought he was from Milwaukee. (Actually he's from South Milwaukee.) And throiM h most of M s firs t three seasons as a Sun D evil, Nim phius was battling to find him self, both as a basketball player some 1,800 m iles away from home, and as a student wrestUng w ith the w orld of eUm atokgy. He wasn’t too suc cessful. “ Yeah, I had m y doubts. I was confused,” said Nim phius, now the senior cornerstone of the ftm D evils, who play F rid a y night against Loyoia-ICarymount in one of two West Regtanak at the A c tiv ity Center. “ M y G P A (grade point average) took a dive m y freshman and sophomore years. There'S been a lot of in decision, a lot of regrets. But there have also been a lot of good tim es, too.” Most of those good tim es have taken place during his senior ysar, as Nim phius has establish ed him self as one of die Pac-iO’e top players. He was selected to both the All-Conference team as w ell as the West squad f$r the Pim a Hut C lassic collegia to aD- star game. He loads ASU w ith a 17-point scoring average. And he did weB in school last fa fi, too, am assing a S.18 G P A.
