The ASU Facu lty Association hand delivered the resolution to Schwada’s office Jan. 31. M urray Stride, president of the faculty association, said the document was sent without a cover letter. “ It was an oversight on our part but I’m preparing a brief letter apologising fo r it and resubm itting a copy of the resolution, ” he said. He added that there w ill be no changes in the resolu tion. M iller was fin d as athletic director Jan. S by Schwada without a University bearing. The resolution states that M ille r’s rem oval is bound to have dsa isgtng eonnotatiewB due to the controversy ever the football program and be is entitled to an opportunity to refute any allegations before an im partial body. The resolution also includes reference to the rem oval of form er head football coach Frank Kush without a bearing. “The need fo r a public hearing goes w ell beyond any personal right or privilege of M ille r or Kush and is sure to continue despite any personal settlements or the h ir ing of replacements for the two dism issed parties,’’ the resolution said. ASU Professor of Law W illiam Canby drafted the resolution. He said it was done in fairness to Kush and M ille r. "The association also would lik e to see the principle established whereby no one can be dism issed sum m arily (without a bearing),” he added. The resolution said, “ Only a public hearing can deter mine die v a lid ity of the various charges in a manner that w ill perm it the entire a ffa ir to be put properly to rest. “ The entire U niversity com m unity suffers from the cloud hanging over the athletic program ." “ It is an injustice to the community and Arizona to dism iss two of the contending principal figures without ever holding a fu ll and im partial inquiry into the facts of the controversy,” the resolution said. The proposal asks Schwada to convene an im partial committee to investigate the controversy, provide an op portunity for s hearing for the involved parties and make findings of fact and recommendations regarding the K ush-M iller controversy and other relevant issues. "O nly three studonts showed up.” The forum was part of a cam paign by the Arixona Students Associa tion to ask the Ariaona Board of Regents to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages at the throe state universities. ASA director K u rt F reitag said at the forum that the group w ill sup p o rt the serving of liquor at special events on campus. Those events in clude Homecoming activities, faculty and alum ni events and student organization gatherings that now tend to meet off campus. However, the proposal would not allow the sale of alcohol at sporting events, F reitag said. " I f we Included the sale of liquor at sports events, the .regents w ou ld defeat us on that im m ediately. “ Thfe board fears drinking at these functions would be d ifficu lt to monitor. Also, there are some studenteat these events who are under 19," F reitag said. He added that the proposal would be a "foot In the door” for future student leaders who could push for the sale of alcohol at athletic events. F reitag a b o said there would be no competition with local binlnoosrs beeiww* liquor only would be available during special events. ASA proposed that a special committee from various sectors of the « m p be farm ed to handle the liquor license and the M U would be the only location whore alcohol would be available. "U liquor were to be available for sports events, then the football stadium would need its own license, the baseba ll stadium would need one and eo on. Our proposal puts the alcohol in one location," Freitag said. Student regent Joel Stiner said he supports the proposal and thinks there probably would be some support from other members on the board. “ I'm just speculating on what the regents m ight do,” Stiner said. “ O f course, the board would be sensitive to any controversial action but I don’t think the issue to that controversial. Since the semester began, his class has changed rooms four tim es because of faulty room schedul ing, he sakL Hoffm an’s class was originally scheduled for room 140 in R itter. However, three architecture courses also were scheduled for that room, so he and the 14 other students in his class moved to room 180 in R itte r on Jan. 18. The follow ing Tuesday, his class had to move outside because two other 16-student classes also needed die SO-eeat room. Hoffm an’s class “ sat on the asphalt" outside the building and sketched in the fog that day, he ankl. He said that two days later, his class got to stay in room 198, but another class had to leave. On Tuesday, there was no space again for Hoff man’s class in room 198. However “ we heard there was a possible empty room in the Language and Literatu re B uildin g,’ ’ Hodman said. The class found an open room there, but had to leave after 90 m inutes to give the space to another fle a s scheduled for the room. “ F o r two weeks we’ve daoe absolutely nothing,” Hoffm an said. “ It’s not just a fun class. It’s very im portant to m e.” None of the faculty members who teach D ES 180 and 181 (advanced sketching) could be reached for comment. Dr. Rushia Fellows, the coordinator of pre professional studies in the College of Architecture, said he is trying to find extra rooms for TuesdayThursday and Monday-Wednesday classes. “ Space is a big problem on this campus,” he said. “ We really, don’t have space unless it ’s shared (between the sketching classes). ” Fellow s said the beginning sketching classes are designed so that each class spends one day draw ing inside and one day outside a week. However, he said, the rainy weather has prevented the classes from working outside. He said that “ as soon as it stops raining” the D ES 160 classes can begin alternating between the rooms and outside; Fellow s said the classes need sketching tables to work on, so m any rooms are not suitable to move to. “ I did fin d a -room in the L anguage and Literature Buikhhg,” he said, but since that room can only be used on Mondays and Wednesdays, “ we’re s till looking,” Fellow s said. Fellow s said the teachers were told about the situation. He said that even after the weather clears up, he would like to keep the extra classroom s Just in case they are needed later in the semester. Fellow s said the-weather was good until w ell in to last semester and there were not as many space problems. N BC also challenged the relevance of the com parison. The M obil com m ercial, which has run on stations in New Y ork, Washington and Lae Angeles, features a well-dressed man, described by M obil as a "security analyst-type," saying M ob il's profits were "b ig ,” but then noting that M obil spent more than $2.5 b illio n last year to find and produce o il and gas. Charles L. Schultze, the chairm an of C arter’s Council of Econom ic Advisers, acknowledged to reporters that “ should o il prices rise significantly more’ ’ than the forecast, “ it would cause us some trouble.” Schultze also said the adm inistration projects the increase in domestic o il prices at about 30 per cent. Domestic o il prices would rise more than the world pr ice as the result of Carter’s program to lift existing controls from domestic prices. The annual economic report, which was prepared by the Council of Econom ic Advisers, was even more explicit about how another m ajor increase in o il prices could affect the economy in USO. “ A s in 1171, a m ajor threat to the outlook is that O P E C decisions about prices and production may lead to increases in world o il prices that go w ell beyond those announced recently,” it said. “ such a development would, in the short run, add to the restraint on the economy exerted by o il pricee, exacerbóte inflation and lead to lower economic growth and higher unemployment,” it added. The report said the increase in O PEC prices last year was equivalent to a tax increase on Am ericans of $53 billion. U C L A is m u a live m athem atically, but math is not one of the better subjects far mast Pac-10 basketball players. It is highly unlikely that the three front-runners — Oregon State, ASU and Washington State — w ill jo in in a mass collapse, which is what it would take for the Bruins to even tie for the con ference title. There are five seniors on the team, led by Vandewegbe, centers DarreD A lla n s »mt G ig Sim s and forward Jam es W ilkes. MTs - VISA - ~ Thursday, January 31,1960 Stata Prass Papa 17 Russian aggression sours A SU miler Scott By Charlie M a t If the world is a ghetto, as one singing group suggests, then Moscow, in the eyes of some Western countries, is a shim . Red Square is a tenement, the K rem lin the equivilant of a dilapidated firetrap. Like any seedy spot, a place to be avoided. Moscow, the site of the 1M0 Summer O lym pic Games, and the rest of the Soviet Union is under Qre from the United States and other Western countries and some Moslem nations fo r the m ilita ry “ intervention” into Afghanistan by an estimated 100,000 Red A rm y troops. President C arter's deadline for a Soviet w ith d ra w a l from Afghanistan is Feb. 30, hardly tim e enough, some experts say, for the Soviets to move 100,000 troops and their equipment even if they intended to do so. A boycott, w ith the United States Olym pic Committee’s recent support, appears imminent. Canada, West Germ any and Saudi A rabia have expressed their support of the U.S. stand. “ I have some very m ixed emo tions about a boycott and pro bably would have to preface my statement by saying the situation in Afghanistan is probably a lot worse than it seems,” ASU women’s track and O dd coach Roger K e rr said. “ Two weeks ago, I would have said T hope we don’t boycott,’ now because of the w orld situation, a boycott is alm ost inevitable.” The A fg han people are prisoners w ithin their own coun try, and in a way, Am erican athletes training fo r the summer games are prisoners in their country also — they probably won’t get to go to the Olym pics. Moscow, tf the Games are s till held there, w ill be a city without children. AD school age children reportedly are to be sent out of the city for the length of Games so they won’t be exposed to Western influence, decadence and politics — something that is not supposed to be a part of the Games. “ We’ve (U.S.) been influential in m aking the O lym pics a p o litical football,” K e rr said. “ In IMS in M exico C ity we had the M ack athletes (boycott).. .in ac tuality, aD three past O lym pics and this one have bean p o litically involved.’’ Steve Scott, the No. 3 1,300 meter man in the w orld and best m ile r in the U .S., said he is in sup port of a boycott “ I kind of feel the same way as the articles (State Press stories on the boyostt in w hich coaches and athletes have been largely in support of the action) printed,” Scott said. “ I’ve fe lt that way from the beginning, especially after President C arter’s State-ofthe-Unionaddreas.” “The Russians are going to go along with the games,” Scott said. “I don’t think the sits will rhnngs because the Internationel Olym pic Committee Is too chicken to move. Lord Ktllanin has the power to move them." So, the Soviet capital w ill be chHdMw and boycotted by a large part of the, intamational community. And rightfully so Scott thinks. ‘Thegoalaf the Olympics is to bring together aD peaceful natieos of tbs world. It’s wrong to hold them In Russia haanuee they’re an aggreeer and dsee to cutting off eur oil suppiias.” NBC has installed a multi mllMea dollar system to talevtao the Games which wiD bo loft ia fhs Soviet Union after their cemplotku. Anwricaa dollars and tadmakgr apparently wIB net ha , uaatf to televise Am erican atldalm. ‘1 think it would be a good idea If a ll gw tejevietre would pull out,” Scott said. “ They (Soviets) want to show the rest of the world what a great nation they are, which is a bunch of baloney.” One argument against the boycott is that the athletes, not the Soviets, are the ones hurt by the boycott. ‘T o devote an entire life to that one moment in four years is not a sm art thing to do,” Scott said “ I’ve got a number of goals, I Railroad Ties I I and Power Polos | THE UPSTAIRS PUB SPECIAL CAB LE SPO O LS IWTY HOUR 4-7 EMI, M l Owf Qraat for Dorma 4 Apt*. •s EM Tabla«, Plant Stand«. Open Weekdays 9:09 to 9:09 Saturdays 19:00 Is ?W9 10:09 le I M Thursday, January 31,1960 S tats P ress Papa I t More about PAC race tightening, but where's m rntm m t Bern peg« M Oregon S tate does not have the schedule in its favor, however, still having to face UCLA and Southern Cal on the road, not to inention W ashington S tate in Pullm an. Then the last weekend of the season, ASU will visit C orvallis for the gam e th at could decide the league crown. Washington S tate m ight be playing the best basketball in the con ference right now. The Cougars rolled up an im pressive victory over the Bruins last Saturday. They still m ust m ake the Los A n g ela trip, but have the top two team s in the PAC, OSU and ASU, a t home. The schedule favors W ashington State. Now as for ASU, the Sim Devils have ju st two road trips rem aining, but they indude both the B eavers and Cougars. The Devils have ju st com e off th eir biggest victory over UA since 1971, only to be dropped out of the U PI top 30. ASU’s only conference loss cam e a t the hands of Oregon S tate without the services of sta rte rs Alton L ister and Sam W illiams, who w ere declared ineligible for the gam e. The first round of the NCAA regionals this y ear a re in the Activity C enter. It is yet to be determ ined w hether the PAC champion will go to W eber S tate for the first round or come to Tempe. In aU liklihood, BYU will win the W estern A thletic Conference crown. Should th at happen, the Congers would go to W eber State, where gam es will be played Thursday and Saturday. The Tem pe gam es will be played on a F riday and Sunday form at. BYU will not play on Sunday. Should the Pac-10 race end in a tie, there will be a one-gam e playoff to determ ine the champion for NCAA seeding purposes. A coin toss would determ ine the site of the playoff. So if ASU and Oregon S tate ended up in a tie, there would be a playoff, even if the B eavers had already beaten ASU twice. If there is a three way tie, coin tosses will determ ine which of the three gets a bye and the sites of the gam es. The reason for all this m m confusion is th at the champion gets a bye in the first round of playoffs. Two team s each will advance from the Tem ps and W eber S tate regionals into the F a r West Regional a t Tucson. A nnounc»m»nt» H alp Wanted_____ DISCOVER ECKANKAR.
