Rehfield quits as adviser;
blames Kush pressure

A cadm ic Adviser John Rehfield resigned Tuesday, saying continued pressure from former foot­
ball coach Prank Kuril forced him to compromise
himself in the m atter of eight players declared in­
eligible.
Rehfield’s resignation is effective Dec. 81.
“My nine-year tenure has come to an end due to
the recent turmoil involving the transfer of credit
from Rocky Mountain College,“ be stated in his
letter of resignation.
"During my five years as academic adviser, I
have always tried to act with the best interest of
the student-athlete in mind. The continual
pressure that Coach Kush put an me in the area of
eligibilty forced me into a situation that I must
now live with the n e t of my life.”

Kush expressed surprise when told of Rehfield’s
resignation. Despite Rehfield’s statem ent after
-the Nov. 19 Pac-lO ruling that Kuril had told Mm,
“get ’em eligible er-you’re fired,” Kush said he
had not applied undue pr essure.
“There was no more pressure on John
(Rehfield) than on me or anyone else,” Kush said.
“There is ahray pressure in a winning program,
and I’m sure John had pr essure like everyone
else. He is a fine young man and I have a lot of
respect for Mm.”
Athletic Director Fred Miller, who received the
letter of resignation, said of Rehfield’s allegation,

Penick said he received the report on the audit in

The Pac—10 allows 1,000 complimentary tickets for
each home game. The audit showed that 2,380 tickets
were **■"«*—* out for the USC game in 1070,2,00 for the
Califorria game and 2,579 for the Stanford game.

tra tickets given out, in accordance with Pac—10 pro­
cedure, an act which cost the University 143,000 in possi­

adherence to Pac—10 policy.
The regent committee recommended a complete
report on any possible improvements in policy before
the Dec. 7 Board ef Regents meeting.
Penick m et Wednesday afternoon with athletic depart­
ment representatives including Athletic Director Fred
Miller end Assistant Athletic Director John Wades.
Miller told the 8tate Press after the meeting that each
of the recommendations made in the audit were examin­
ed.
Penick said the audit brought up several points other
than the complimentary ticket office and that those pro­
cedures also were being examined.

Three fire trucks, three rescue tracks and four squad cars
were
to ASU Wednesday afternoon to extinguish a blaze
in the basement photo lab of the Art Building.
The fire caused little actual damage, according to Tempe
Assistant BataUkm Chief Cliff Jones.
“Evidently the sprinkler system handled it,” he said. “There
was Just a little smoke and a lot of w ater.”
About tan students who were in the basement photo lab
reported that a m atch thrown into a cardboard garbage box ig­
nited the blaze, which triggered the sprinkler system.
Police were called to the scene a t about 3:15 p.m. and ac­
tivated the fire alarm . When the Tempe F ire Department
arrived a few minutes later, the building had been evacuated
and the sprinkler system had extinguished the blase.
A student in the darkroom said she heard the sprinklers come
on and then smelted smoke.

Moslem students stir up
another conflict on mall

An Information table sponsored by the Moslem
Students’ Association became the site of another
hoatrrl debate between Iranian and American
students Wednesday.
An industrial engineering graduate student, who
would identify himself only as “Kazene,” said the
association had set up the table on Cady Mall to
dissem inate information.
The information was pro-Ayatollah RuhoUah
Khomeini, explaining his side of the recent Ira­
nian takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
What hadbeen a qidet morning an the m all turn­
ed into a short-fused argument in the afternoon,
bod) Kazene and a representative of the Beth Sar
Shalom Hebrew Christian Fellowship said.
“A few Jewish people stopped by and made
noise,” Kazene said.

Sid Stern, Phoenix representative of the
fellowship, said a man who was not Jewish stop­
ped by die information table about 1 p.m. and at­
tracted a crowd by using abusive and foul
language.
“The m sn who started it was not Jewish — he
was a hothead, but not Jewish,” Stern said, adding
that he knows most of the Jewish students a t ASU.
As with previous debates on campus since the
embassy occupation, both print and verbal infor­
mation was exchanged, Iwt some students re­
mained anti-Iranian.
“You look a t it this way,” telecommunication
m ajor Jeff Schimmel said,“they say he (the shah)
has killed so many people, but you ask them how
m a n y Khomeini has killed and they don’t
answ er."

ASU’s Financial Aids Office has done it again.
In one of the best scams yet, 55 criminal justice
students were awarded tuition loans under the federal
Law Enforcement Education Program, given time to
spend the money—and then ordered to give it back.
Why? It seems the funds the office handed out weren’t
there.
And it looks as though the victims are going to be
forced to pay for the mistake.
Victor Louis, ASU’s LEEP loan coordinator, is reponsibie for the $45,000 bungle. Apparently not realizing the
federal program was being “phased-out,” Louis doled
out the loans and then allegedly tried to coerce the
students into repaying the money immediately.
The Financial Aids Advisory Committee, as well as
the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare,
is investigating not only the mishandling of funds but
also the allegations of coercion.
Susan Scott, one of the unfortunate students getting
the shaft, said pouis tried to force her to sign a state­
ment promising to give the money back.
“ I would not have been able to come here (ASU) if I
didn’t get the loan,” Scott told the State Press. “I was
told it would carry me through unntl graduation.’’
A lot of students apparently were told the same thing.
Now many of them face severe financial hardship and

was neatly pulled out from under them.
True, many of these students who depended on this
money would have had to make other plans had they not
been awarded i t They might have had to work for a
while, borrow a t high interest rates, or whatever in
order to finance their education.
But the fact is, they were awarded the money, and it’s
unfair to tell them they must pay it back now.
Associated Students President Susie Eastridge said
the HEW audit, which already is complete, cannot be
made public until the University has had a chance to res­
pond to i t That response, according to Eastridge, is
overdue. Neither Roger Swanson, dean of financial aid,
nor the Vice Prosident'of Student Affairs George Hamm
were around Wednesday to explain why.

University fund-juggling might possibly result in the
LEEP recipients being spared having to cough up the
’cash right away. But — ¿ id it’s a big one — she added
she couldn’t see how this could be done without cheating
other deserving financial aids cares down the line.
It would seem unlikely, wouldn’t it? Juggling or no
jugglii*, the fact rem ains that pure incompetence in the
Financial Aids Office has cost a lot of students a lot of
unnecessary grief.
And they can’t take that to the Cashier's Office.

Under the terms of the loans, students aren’t supposed

to have to begin paying back the money until six months
after graduation. But if they get a job after gnukiaton in
the law enforcement field, 25 percent of the loan’s value
is deducted every year. In other words, if a student
works in such a job far four years, be or she has no fur­
ther obligation to pay back one nickel.
It would be interesting hear how the Financial Aids Of­
fice expects these students to get a job and pay back
their loans if they are forced to quit school because the

of Public Program s, supports the rights of those
55 Criminal Justice m ajors affected by the ASU
Financial Aids Office.
These students are being held accountable for
certain gross errors which are absolutely no fault
of theirs. They signed their contracts in good
faith for federal LEEP funds, only to discover
th at the F inancial Aids Office had
misrepresented where these funds would actually
be coming from. They were awarded ASU money
instead.
Students were informed, before being awarded
the LEEP funds, that money was in fact
available. The clause Mr. Roger Swanson cites,
“Each award indicated on the front is conditional

During the past weeks I have found myself thinking like an unin­
formed racist toward the Iranians and their cause. To change this
m anner of thinking, I simply tim ed the tables.
I envisioned the United States as having a leader, installed by a
foreign power, who killed thousands of U S. citizens without mercy.
These citizens could be my friends and family. If this leader was in
Iran after his exile, protected by its government, and U.S. doctors
were not allowed to examine him, my sentiments would be very
sim ilar to those of Iraians today.
The reaction of narrow-minded people in this country is em­

source of anger and hostiility toward Iranians, and put forth energy
toward becoming informed about a subject which creates such strong

schedule, and cancellation clause certainly would
solve this present dilemma.

suspecting student into his office, one a t a time,
and tried to coerce each into taking out a. second
loan to repay the first. It appears that such
inexcuMble behavior by this Financial Aids
Officer is more the rule than the exception.
If the Criminal Justice students had been in­
formed that they were receiving ASU money

many would never have applied for loans in the

Doesn't the Financial Aids Office keep track of
where the money for its various loan programs

It is also about tim e that Associated Students
get involved. What ever happened to that old
campaign slogan we elected, “She’s done a lo t
she’ll do a lot more”? Obviously, all “she” has
done is acquiesce to the University ad­
ministration. ASASU is bady lacking in
leadership and this issue gives it both a cause in
which to reorganize and openly dem onstrate how
it can truly protect the student interests on
campus.
Something has to be done to dean up the
Financial Aids Office, and it’s more than ap­
parent who should be the person to take charge.
The question left unanswered from last year’s
election is: “ Will die?"

As the Campus Affairs Vice President for ASASU, I
am in charge of the Information C oder and the em­
ployees who staff it.
Accusations were made in a letter to the State Press
an Tuesday concerning one of the employees of the
Information Center.
The “author” of the letter, one Bryan Alyn, does not
othu according to the ASU records office, the student
drectory and the Phoenix telephone directory. The
accuser does not even have the decency to use his real

name, thus denying the accused the right of facing his
accuser.
I am curious as to why the letter cam e from a third
party and not the ailedgedty offended woman.
The reputation of this employee has been damaged by
these libelous statem ents and the State Press in­
flammatory headline.
I stand by my employee and our hiring practices
within ASASU. This employee will not be dismimed
because of one anonymous allegation.

If anyone has a complaint against an employee under
my jurisdiction, that person should come to see me. My
door is ALWAYS o p n to ANYONE whs wishes to see
me concerning any m atter.

Status rules deny students
¡n-state residency rehearings

Although a currant lawsuit against ASU
charges that a student should have bean
granted a rehearing for in-state tuition status,
fee-status guidelines say no rehearings are
given.
Susan Ahrer, University Appeals Committee
chairm an, said Wednesday the committee
receives 500 appeals per sem ester from
students originally denied ia-state status.
“We Just can’t hear all of diem (students that
request a second bearing).’’she said.
Ahrer added that there will be people left
over from the fall sem ester who need an
original hearing.
Lisa Herman, an ASU broadcasting m ajor, is
suing the Arizona Board of Regents, the
University and the appeals committee because
she did not receive in sta te status for the lf79
fall sem ester.
In Wednesday’s State Press, it was reported

that she said because of a loan, “I have more
money than I know what to do with. ”
Herman actually is a sophomore. Her loan
and the fact that she lived on campus ac­
counted for her extra money and few expenses
last year—not this year.
P art of the suit s complaint states that no stu­
dent members of the appeals committee were
present a t Herman’s hairing.
However, Alver said the guidelines state that
the appeals committee members may include
representatives from the faculty, staff and
students, but no quota of each group is required
to be present a t the hearings.
She added that a t the beginning of the
sem ester, the committee had problems contac­
t s the student members due to changes of ad­
dress since the spring.
Alver said she explained this to Herman and
in a letter to Herman’s attorney, Steven Yar­
brough.

Carter urges
peaceful end
to Iran crisis
WASHINGTON (AP) - The
president said he still has hopes
for a peaceful solution to the
Iranian crisis, which began on
Nov. 4 with seizure of the U.S.
Embassy in Tehran. But he did
not rule out other remedies.
He said he hoped a United
N ations
Security
Council
meeting on the Iranian crisis,
scheduled for Saturday, would
eventually lead to “a peaceful
solution, because a peaceful
solution is preferable to the other
remedies available — for the
United States and the world.”
R egardless, he vowed to
pursue with “ grim d eter­
mination” the release of the 49
hostages still being held in the
U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
Administration officials, he
said, “will persist in our efforts
until every single American has
been freed.”
And in a stern warning to
Iranian leaders. Carter said,
“The government of Iran must
recognize the gravity of the
situation it has itself created —
and the grave consequences
which will result if harm comes
to any of the hostages.”
The Iranian m ilitants holding
the embassy have threatened to
kill the hostages if the United
States attem pts to take m ilitary
action to free them . The
m ilitants have demanded that
the United States return the
exiled Shah Mohammad Reza
Pahlavi to Iran to stand trial.

Unintentional abuse by able-bodied persons has
caused the breakdown of an automatic door for
the handicapped, but a simple addition should
solve the problem, the Installer said.
- The door is located a t the north entrance to the
MU, and was installed in September. It has been
inoperative twice this month.
" It appears that the door was pushed open with
a great deal of force, causing the operator
(electronic device) to pull away from the header
(doer fram e),” said Jim Micheau, owner of
Horton Doors in Mesa.
“The addition of a m etal door stop to prevent
the door from being opened too far would solve
the problem,” he gdded.
Micheau said the secood breakdown was
caused by a loose screw that apparently was not
Hghtwwd enough during the first attem pt to
reattach the operator.
The cost of the first repair was about $35, but
the door still to under w arranty, so the University
was not charged, he said.

The door to one of four that have been installed
by Micheau for use by disabled persons. Each
door costs about $1,000.
The doors operate when a button, located on a
blue box m arked with » handicap symbol, to
pushed. They also can be operated manually.
“I don’t think we should lim it the use of the
doors to the handicapped, and'I intend to make
the door work as it should,” Micheau said.
He said he already has contacted Physical
Facilities to get approval on the installation of
the door stop, which be said would not cost the
University.
Micheau added that a handicap sticker placed
on the glass at eye level might encourage persons
using the door to be more careful with it.
Bill Jenkins, assistant coordinator for student
services, agreed that education would help.
“People don’t realize that this to a special door.
They don’t mean to abuse it. They’re just
unaware that it needs to be handled carefully,”
Jenkins said.

Players crowded around the full-sired crap
table, hoping for a lucky roll of the dice.
Across the smoke-filled room, others nervous­
ly studied their hands a t a blackjack table.
Attractive young women, d ad in skimpy
outfits, scurried about the room, doling out
free drinks and cigarettes for anyone who
wanted them.
No, it’s not Las Vegas or Atlantic City. It’s
an illegal Phoenix casino in a 32rd Drive and
Peoria Avenue house that was dosed down
last year by the Phoenix Police Department.
But there are others like it still operating.
It is just one of the many illegal gambling
activities that local law enforcement officials
say are thriving in the
Phoenix area. And they
are becoming more and
more prevalent every
day.
Authorities estim ate
that about two out of
every three Americans gamble. Although
mo6t of it is done legally a t pari-mutual race
tracks and Nevada and New Jersey casinos, it
is believed that more than $5 billion is annual­
ly wagered on illegal bets.
And according to Capt. Richard Bequette,
chief of the Phoenix Police Department’s
Special Investigations Bureau, Phoenicians
are contributing more than their share to that
figure.
“Phoenix used to be a pretty d ean city as
far as illegal gambling is concerned,” he said.
“There was a void here and now people are
starting to fill it.
“Right now it’s quite prevalent and I would
say it’s very definitely on the rise.
“There’s a large interest in it locally, and
there’s a lot of money to do i t People are
moving in from other areas of the country and
they want to gamble.’’

legal gambling operations for the Phoenix
Police Departm ent’s Organised Crime
Bureau, agreed with Bequette.
“Illegal gambling is very extensive here,’’

munity in various forms and every year it in­
creases.’’
In addition to illicit casinos, local
authorities aré constantly on the lookout for
bookmaking activity, parlay card operations
and an assorted array of machine-Uke
devices that issue monetary payoffs»- Mean­
while, anyone who wants to gamble can
always find an outlet, a Valley gambler said.
Marvin (he wished to withhold his last
name), a member of Phoenix’s Gamblers
Anonymous chapter, said, “There’s always a
local bookmaker you can call up to place
$1,000 or even |5,000 on a
football game,” he said.
“If you’re a gambler
you can always find
someone to bet with.”
It is during the foot­
ball season that illegal
gambling becomes most widespread around
the Phoenix area, Bequette said.
"Anytime during the football season more
people feel that they can wager successfully,’’
he said.
Boakmaking and parlay card operators are
the main beneficiaries of the increased fall
activity, much to the chagrin of local law en­
forcement officials.
“We’re always on the lookout for the
bookmaker,” Bequette said. “They usually
have a maximum bet of $50 to $100 for which
they will charge 10 percent to 20 percent
‘ju k e’ to the participants in order to place
their wagers. It is principally sports wager­
ing, football, basketball or baseball."
“Juice” is the gambler’s term for interest
charged by the bookie. Like any other
business, some bookies are more expensive
than others.

Douglas says wrestlers
face 'toughest meet ever'

Douglas can’t play this one up
enough.
"I have a feeling this will be the
toughest dual meet we’ve ever
had,” he said of tonight’s meet
against Iowa State in the Activity
Center.
Douglas said the Iowa State
m atch reminds him of the
Oklahoma match two seasons
ago, won by ASU in an upset.
“The last time we had a name
like Iowa State in here, we had
about 5,000 fans. And I think that
really helped us win,” he said.
Iowa State was runnerup in last
year’s NCAA finals and was
ranked fourth preseason. Coming
into the 7:30 p.m. m atch, the Sun
Devils were ranked seventh in
preseason polfe. ASU is 1-0 after a
come-from-behind win over Cal
Poly-San Luis Obispo Oct. 18.
An ASU positive should be the
return of 118-pounder Randy
Hoffman a fte r a spell of
mononucleosis. Douglas, while
adm itting that “mono is tricky,”
thinks Hoffman is back at 75 to 80
percent ability and just worries
about him tiring. He calls Hoff­
m an's performance very impor­
tant.
’‘We ha ve to get the momentum
right off the bat,” he said. “ I’d
rather have the lead and lose
than go into the later weights try­
ing to catch up. I'd say that first
m atch is going to be the key.”
Alee in the tentative ASU lineup
is 155-pounder Tom Rankin, who
comes off a severe ankle sprain.

Douglas is counting on Rankin for
experience a t that weight.
Iowa State will be led by AllAmericas Dave Allen (third in
NCAA a t 177 pounds last year)
and Mike Mann (seventh in
NCAA a t 190 pounds). ASU’s
Severn brothers will match up
against the pair, All-America
Dave at 177 and Dan at 190.
“Iowa State may have as many
as five freshmen in their lineup,”
Douglas said. “But coaches are
usually vague about their lineup,
and that could be a snowscreen.
“And if they have freshmen
who are beating out Allen and
Mann, they have some awfully
good freshm en.”
There has been no problem
motivating the wrestlers for this
match, he said.
“The only way you can
describe our kids and team right
now is intense. There is such a
thing as being too ready, but I‘d
rather be too ready than not
ready," he said.______________

NCAAs last season.

in the USC Trojan Open Friday and Saturday in Los Angeles. It

the Midwest Championships in Chicago. Barclay was fourth in
all-around competition (52.9) and second in parallel bars (9.4),

Bears' rookie A l Harris
slowed by tough 'break'
After an All-America senior season at ASU, Al
H arris was drafted in the first round of the NFL
college draft by the Chicago Bears. He signed a
five-year contract for a handsome sum, and was
all set to step in and contribute to his new team.
But, as Murphy’s Law so often dictates,
something is always capable of going wrong to
anybody, and Harris is no exception.
A knee injury knocked the 6-foot-5, 240 pound
defensive end out of action during the first week of
scrimm age in August. “Warren Bryant (Atlanta
Falcons’ offensive tackle) and I, well, we hit and
we both were stood up. 1 was thinking the play was
over—so I just kind of stopped and relaxed a little
bit,” recalled Harris, in Tempe to watch the ASUUA game. “He kind of lifted me up and I turned all
the weight on my leg and it somehow broke part of
the bone.”
The injury caused a 10-wees break in Harris
rookie season, and he is now just returning to light
duty.
“They’ve been working me in a little at a time,
but not a lot, you know,” said Harris, who led ASU
with 46 unassisted tackles his senior season. “For
the rem ainder of the year, I’ll just see spot play,
just to keep my feet wet. ”
Getting his feet cold was one of H arris’ ap­
prehensions about going to the Windy City—not
one of your warmer winter climes. But weather
hasn’t been one of his worries—yet.
“There have been a couple practices where it
was so cold you couldn’t move your hands, said
H arris, who played his football in Hawaii and
Arizona before reaching Chicago’s frozen zone.
“And we played L. A. when it was about 30 degrees
at game time. It’s going to get colder, but I can ad­
just to that.
One thing Harris has adjusted to is the relatively
relaxed lifestyle of the Bears—a far cry from the
m ilitaristic ASU atmosphere surrounding former
Sun Devil head coach Frank Kush, for whom Har­
ris toiled in Tempe.

because you’re dealing with men, guys like 34 or 35
years old, compared to 18- and 17-year-old guys.
You’re dealing with a different kind of people.
“If Coach Kush coached in the pros, he’d
definitely have to change his style, because he’d
be messing with men. I don’t think he’d try it on a
grown man. It’s different, I think, because for pro
athletes it’s a job. If you don’t do your job, you just
lose your job.”
The events surrounding Kush lasing his job
“shocked” Harris.
“ The reason I was is the way he was fired, just
suddenly, and it just didn’t seem right after all the
years he put in,” H arris said. “I was wondering if
at least they’d give him his say in court and then
take action."
The only action Harris wants to take as a Bear is
against NFC Central leader Tampa Bay this Sun­
day, as Chicago trails the Buccaneers by two
games with three to play.
“Catching Tampa Bay seems almost impossi­
ble,” said Harris, noting Chicago’s 20-0 loss to
Detroit Thanksgiving Day. “But when we play
them, we’Ujust have to win, that’s all. ”
