D ouglas \. m Keeping a closed eye on the sexists The Associated Students Executive Committee sounds lik e it's beginning to model itself after the Arizona state Legislature. B y ordering the ASASU Women’s A ffa irs Board to cease involvm ent with the newly formed “ Women Against Sexual Harassm ent” group, the ASASU execs have taken a giant step— backwards. The W AB — thanks to its co-directors, members and volunteers — has tried hard this semester to do ■nmething about the sexism that has been running un checked on this campus fo r generations. That’s a tough goal in itself, but one that stands even less of a chance if the ASASU upper echelon refuses to back it up. The idea of a “ hotline’ ’ for sexually harassed women was initiated by a W AB volunteer and received strong support from codirectors Barbara Greenway and Dorine Zelman. Why? Because it was long overdue and because the W AB feels it has an obligation to the women it serves. A four-member committee, composed of W AB volunteers, got the W ASH project off the ground. Although G reenway and Zelman were not involved directly, their support and guidance was instrum ental in securing a program that m ight. Just m ight, have some clout instead of m erely empty rhetoric. They’re afraid some irate prof might sue ASASU and chef barfield Hotline callers were assured of confidentiality. Dossiers were com piled of sexual harassment in cidences, lis tii« the names of accused offenders. C learly the movement was gaining momentum, and this, apparently, made some people a bit edgy. Now ASASU President Susie Eastrldge and the other executive officers, realizing such accusations are a serious m atter that m ight lead to more than a mere rap on the w rists, fear possible legal repercussions. the U niversity fo r keeping his name on a blacklist, and they don’t want to be responsible for WASH’S dtoly laun dry. Sun D evil Stadium was turned into Casino Royale Satur day night as two head coaches went at each other w ith the nerves of A m a rillo Slim . ASU head coach Bob Owens was gam bling w ith fours. U A head coach Tony Mason was using 44’s w ith an eight the bard way. On the fourth play of the game, the Sun D evils had a fourth down and a yard to go and went for the firs t down. They made it. They tried the same devil-m ay-care tric k seven more tim es before the wight was over, twice on fake punts, and they went a perfect 8tor-8. “ We were w illing to pull out a ll the stopa,” Owens said. “ Before the game, we decided we would go on fourth down and short anytim e we had i t U A had the momentum w ith a bowl bid on the lin e and we needed to counter that, so we gambled.” W hile Owens was using every down he had, Mason was playing “ Rfeerhoat R ile y ” w ith M s run ning game, gam bling it would operate efficiently agataat the nadan's No. 5 rushing dsf eass . It paid off as U A gained S tt yards an the ground. No. 44, Hubert O liver, grabbed 96 at thcee and two touchdowns . But the fin al bet was Mason’s, w ith no tim e, o fficially, remaining in the game. And Mason used No. 4, a walk-on freshman, Brett Weber, to win the hand X7-M with a 17-yard field goal. Mason said he went w ith the freshman in the pressure situa tion because he wanted to sp a re B ill Z ivic, the W ildcats’ firststring field-goal kicker, from “ having to live with it if he m issed again.” Z iv ic missed a field goal in the closing seconds last year as ASU defeated U A 1817. “ I wouldn’t want him to have to think about that the rest of Ms life ,” Mason said. “ So I took the pressure off and went w ith B re tt That made the decision mine, and it would have been m y fault if we not B ill’s, that’s the way I wanted i t The gamble paid off, bid it took a m isdeal. Weber sent a 37-yard attem pt wide of the goalposts m tim e ran out in the game. But ASU cornerbeck Ron Brown was called for roughing the kicker, and Weber got another sh o t as did Mason. The worst part about U A ’s 27-24 “upset” w in over ASU Saturday night is that the W ildcats are stuck w ith that Godawful trophy created for the winner of *“The B ig Gam e.” And they didn’t waste any tim e giving it to the Cats, either. There it was, standing alm ost seven feet ta ll, in U A ’s cram ped visiting team quarters a t Sun D evil Stadium — its weatbervane-like top pointing toward Tucson, Later, a busload of U A players would be heading to Tucson as w e ll— confident that they made up the No. 1 team in Arixona. But as sure as God didn’t make those little roughing the kicker penalties, victory didn’t come easy fo r UA. But maybe the D eity had something to do w ith the W ildcat win. “ God gave see two chance*," said Brett Weber, U A ’s walk-on kicker who booted a 27yard field goal w ith no tim e left to keep U A from kissing its sister school. F o r Weber, God came in the form of Sun D evil defensive back Ron Brown, who slamm ed into the freshm an kicker on his first attempt from 37 yards. The k ick went wide right, but the 10-yard penalty moved Weber’s second at tempt intochipahot range. “ Yeah, he hit me real good,” said Weber, who was playing in his firs t varsity game. “ But I helped him out a bit by doing a pretty good fake Job." Weber’s second attempt was real enough, however, despite the pressure placed on the barefoot hooter. »1 once heard Tony F ran klin (Philadelphia Eagles’ kicker) talk about the same type of situation. He said Just to put it a ll out of your mind, to put it (the ball) right through. So I calm ed down, and it took off the pressure.” Before Weber took on the pressure for his heroics, it looked lik e a “ deja vu” of sorts m ight take place for U A ’s other kicker, sophomore B ill Z ivic. Jim Etoteger Last season, w ith the W ildcats tra ilin g ASU 1S-17, Z iv ic was called on to k ic k a 46-yard field goal w ith nine seconds le ft He m issed badly. This year, despite kicking a 34-yard field goal and three extra paints, Z iv ic was bald out of U A ’s last-second field-goal plana. He seemed slightly m iffed after the game. “ I’ m sere 1 could have kicked it,” said Z ivic, who had toed nine fie ld goals and JB of 33 extra points fo r the W ildcats in IW*. "The plan was to let him (Weber) kick the longer fie ld goals, but I don’t know...” “ I thought it was tim e to change,” said U A coach Tony Mason. “ I did it ’cause I wanted to.” Another W ildcat who wanted to w in was senior quarterback Jim m y Krohn, whose 43yard pass to end Pee Wee Jackson w ith I t seconds le ft set up the winning fia ld goal. “ We had the tie locked up, but a tie is nothing," said Krohn, not one o f your better passing quarterbacks. “ So we threw an outand-up W ith i t seconds left, you don’t think of throw iM short.” And If you’ve Jackson, you don’t think of Iobing the fight for the b a ll w ith A SU com orhnck R alph Dixon. “ He (Dixon) had it,” said Jackson about the ooly catch he m ads h i the baUgame. “ The ball actually h it M s heads. It took a good effort to take it aw ay.” Saturday night, it took an all-around good U A effort to take a victory from the Jowls of m ediocrity. UA takes the game as refs take the cake Now that U A has proven it can heat ASU, at least once every five years, it’s tim e to look a t the method. The first thing on everyone’s m ind moments after the game was whether either coach would do a T erry Donahue im ita tion and knock doughnut holes in the refereeing. Neither did. But it wasn’t d e a r whether ft was because of adm iration or fear of retaliation. Besides, c ry babies never die, they Just liv e without bow lbkb.
