Drive yields poor harvest o f hom ecom ing food gifts By E le a Haggerty Only 40 cam and $10 were collected at the Homecoming football game food drop Saturday, despite radio, T V and newspaper announcements, the A ll Saints Newman Center food drive chair­ man said Monday. “ I had hoped for about $0 boxes (of cam )," said Joe Behrendt, senior psychology major. The food drop, held during Hunger Awareness Week to collect for the annual Newman Center Thanksgiving Drive, also was announced by Gov. Bruce Babbitt. Behrendt said he contacted IS radio stations and four TV stations, and had the Danforth Chapel secretary notify newspapers about the drop. The money and canned food was collected in one bin, located between Sun Devil Stadium and the University A ctivity Center. The other three bins were placed on street corners away from the stadium and the parking lota for safety reasons, Behrendt said He added that the placement of these bins partly accounted far the drop's poor results, since at least two people he knew of could net Had the bias to drop off their contributions. “ I Ha«* it (the footbaB-peme audience) is a good source. Behrendt said that amount of food has boon col­ lected already, and by Thursday he w ill have col­ lected from another larger Boy Scout troop and more grocery storm. He added that Hunger Awareness Week and the Cambodian situation have “ helped to heighten sensitivity" of people to world and community hunger. “ It makes me happy that the community reopoods,'' Behrendt said. “ People w ill give feed if you ask them." Bshrsndt. who became involved in the food drive through the Newman Cantor Social Action Committee, said Boy Scout troops have done well in the drive, because they are “ motivated, happy to do it, and they learn something from it."
