But if the local bookies have any accuracy in their guesses, then West Virginia will make a long haul for the short end of the stick. ASU has been instilled as anywhere from a sixto 12-point pick to send the Mountaineers home M in their final hurrah for 1979. And with rumor having it that WVU Coach Frank Cignetti's head is on the butcher’s table if he returns with anything less than 9-5, it could be a long, long return over die scenic 2,200 mile, give-or-take-a-foot trip. Whether the head rolls, or whether the bookies’ do will be decided Saturday in Sun Devil Stadium. ASU is fresh off of a heartbreaker at the Coliseum last week in a 31-20 kiss to UCLA, and have UA next week to look forward to, so the Devils might be looking both ways a t the same time and get caught by a “Great Alexander” up the middle. The “G reat Alexander” Is. of course, the Robert Alexander of the sam e name from West Virginia who three years ago was the most sought-after high school running back in the world. ASU even gave him the once or twice over, but decided not to get heavy into competition with the Notre Dames and USGs, etc. “The G reat” has been anything but so far this season. In 10 games, be has 545 yards. He almost picked that much up in one game in high school. The people in Morgantown, W.Va., have been waiting with bitted nail for some lim e for Alex ander to start cleaning up on apposing defenses. The tim e might be closer than they think. Of late, the 9-feet-l, 190-pound Junior has been looking like the runner who deserves the nickname given him, except for the game last week against Pittsburgh. Perry turns on 'M i/dcats ' as Devils g et 16-point n o d C al 31, Stanford 24. After barely losing to USC, you might expect Washington to be down this week. But the Huskies always get up for this rivalry. Question is, can Washington’s sub passer Tom Flick and the offense, without Joe Steele, still run up the score? Bet they do. W ashington 42, W ashington S tate IS. UCLA’s unpredictable Bruins host Oregon this week. If the Bruins are looking past this one to USC, they’re in for another lass. Oregon and USC are the only two PAC opponents ASU does not face this year—which might be good, w ith the tough games Oregon has given its con ference foes. Look for a field goal difference here. UCLA 2S, Oregon 17. West Virginia a t ASU. Yes, Santa Claus, there is a West Virginia—and the Mountaineers are not the gift win ASU traditionally unravels a t Homecoming. West Virginia is such a » unknown quantity it scares you. But with their quality unknown as well, ASU should be in for a designated win. ASU 3S. West Virginia 14. Oregon State a t UA. The “M ildcats” were picked to win over San Diego State last weekend, but eked out a MM2 loss. You will never see UA picked to win again in this col umn. As a peek preview to next week’s ASU-UA game, let's hear a chorus of "F all down, Arixona.” Oregon State 21, UA 12. Southern Cal has an open week, as though it needs it. With the Trojans incredible offense and the way the Los Angeles Rams find ways to lose games, the Rams and the Trojans would be a good matchup this week. But the Rams might turn it down—they have too much to lose, like the game. If any team can score points in an open week, it is Southern Cal. Fat chance. USC gets a week off before a cross-town “show-up” with UCLA; but spicing the schedule are two cross state games. Cal at Stanford and Washington State hosting Washington are rivalries that go back before there was a Pac-8. If quarterback Turk Schonert starts for Stanford, it’ll be a real shootout between he and Cal’s incredible Rich Campbell. If not, look for the Golden Bears to crunch and spit out the Cardinals. Cal deserves more respect than it has received this year, and Stanford is predictable only in its lack of consistency. •Packaged to travel w ith tender love and care •M ailed to 50 sta te s •F R E E custom p o ttin g — o u r p o ts o r yours •Large se le ctio n o f A rizon a pottery •G iant Watsrslide • Skee Bell, FoosbsN, Air Hookey • Life Site Medierei Castle •Complete Snack Bar Facilities GOLF & GAMES gives you 3 Go-Cart Rides for $ 1 .0 0 E xpires M arch 1 0 ,1 9 8 0 GOLF & GAMES 4 8 th S treet 81*10 eoe-ose* E n ter oM U niversity D rive Friday, N o v m to f 16.1979 S to f Pr— Papa 19 SKI HAUS EVERY RUNNING, TERMS AND ATHLETIC SHOE IN OUR STOCK WILL BE ON SALE! Pape 20 S tato Pr»— Friday, November 16,1979 More about W VU fighting elem ents Two weeks ago Alexander had fun in leading the Mountaineers to a 94-13 win over Virginia Tech with 119 y an k on 14 carriea. It made the fourth straight game in which he had more than 100 yards rushing. But last week against Pitt, he didn’t get the ball much, and for good reason—because “The G reat” had no fun a t all in getting 11 yards in 7 tries. ASU Head Coach Bob Owens is impressed by the West Virginia-born tailback. “From what I’ve seen of him in the films, he’s a good back,” Owens said. “He’s big, I know that. Prom what I understand the people have been a little disappointed in Ms performance so far, but we think he’s a good running back from what we’ve seen.” West Virginia's leading ground gainer Oliver Lqck is an option-type quarterback who is one of those can-do-it-all persons. Luck has rushed for MS yards this season while running the option of fense and has thrown for 1,137 yards a t a 47 per cent clip. Luck will draw most of the attention of the Sun Devil defense, especia lly since he’ll have the ball 90 to 96 percent of the tim e with quick feet and a couple of quicker feet to throw to in flanker Cedric Thomas and Darrell Miller. Together, Miller and Thomas have caught everything but the Hong Kong flu, with 52 receptions between them for799 yards and seven touchdowns. The only other team ASU has played that ran a sim ilar offense to WVU’s is Washington State, which had some success against the Sun Devil defense in nisMng with 169 yards, but was a bust in passing with 98. Owens said be doesn’t see any problems in h a n d lin g the option offense, but that his team is not taking the up-and-down Mountaineers too lightly. “They’re a good team, although they aren’t as strong as some of the strongest teams we’ve played. It will take a good effort to beat them. I know that.” West Virginia played No. 11 P itt to within seven points last week and had a 27-17 win over Tulane earlier in the year to highlight its season thus far. Defensively the Mountaineers have been an a roller-coaster ride most of the season, but put out a good effort against Pitt, especially defensive end Delbert Fowler, who had 11 unassisted tackles, two quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery against the Panthers. Bid whether the Mountaineers are in the same league as ASU is doubtful. Besides facing one of the nation's best rushing defenses and an offense that has recently found you can throw Urn ball as well as run. WVU also faces the elements. “We’re aet ased to the weather like wo’Jl have a t ASU," Cignetti said. “Also, this will be our t o t game of the season under the lights and we’ll ha playing on natural turf. These are all things that we will have to overtom e.” * Whether the Mountaineers overcome is doubt ful. Too many things are agin’ them. But they have heart. “W e're going out there a day early tp got in one practice under the lights and get the feel of the turf,” Cignetti said. That is a real waste. All they have to do is wait until Saturday, and they’ll got‘all the turf fading they want. At least the Mountaineers don’t have an iqjury problem, the. first team ASU has played this year that hasn’t a t least claimed it was so crippled go ing into the game it needed an ambulance to get to the stadium. ASU also is Inking good physical-wise. Willie Gittens is the only m ajor problem right now for the Sun Devils. He still has some problems with his back and Owens said he held him out of half the practice Wednesday, but expacts he’ll sae some action Saturday. Back a t foil strength will be special team cap tain Brian Felix and offensive lineman Norris Williams. G m tot Sites a t OenOertoe Maas • 831-1984 ________ Tuoa.-Frl. 10-5:30, Saturday 10-2 By Dsvo Nsihsrgsll Forgive Mike Richardson if he occasionally suffers a memory lapae. The ASU freshman strong safe ty, who played defensive end Iasi nrerun for Compton (Calif.) High School, still finds himself in oppo nent’s offensive backfieids, someplace moat defensive ends would like to set up permanent residence. Strong safeties are supposed to go for interceptions, not quarter back sacks. But Richardson is go ing for the best of both worlds. Since earning a starting role in the third game of the season against Toledo, the S-foot-I, Itepounder has recorded five quarterback sacks for a total of 4S yards and has picked off two passes to tie him for the team lead in interceptions. He alao is tied for the Sun Devil lead in fumble recoveries with three. Richardson admittedly had played “only a couple of downs” in the defensive backfieid before this season, but his chances of playing on a major collage foot ball team in the defensive Use were little or nothing. Most major college defensive linemen come out of the womb at S-foot-1,1M pounds. But he wasn't deterred. Last season he was tbs first defensive player ever to win the GaMferaia Player of the Year award. He also was an All-America selec tion. Richardson said he was recruited as a strong safety all along and not only by ASU. Washington, Nebraska, Wyoming and UA also were in tha bidding “I chons ASU because the foot ball pr oy a m was good, tha business school was good and I wanted to be deae to my grandmothar whs lives in Eloy,” ha said. '1 also wanted to p ly for Coach Kush because he’s similar to ray high echool coach." RichardMo still thinks he made the right chok e , despite tha ouster of Kush and related con troversies.
