I couldn’t believe i t Deposed head football coach Frank Kuril handing out trophies at Manzanita Speed way. Although I have had what you might call “interviews” with the former coach — I asked questions and he said, “I won’t comment on that” —I don’t know him as a man nor do I care one way or the other what the future bolds for him. He hast his job. I reported parts of the continuing story, spent — «ningiy endless hours pondering the implica tions of the information and, as a result, fell almost hopelessly behind in my classwork. Poor me. After several weeks of the above, I finally began to put the pieces of “Kushgate" into perspective and my life was beginning to return to some sort of normality. Until Saturday night. I didn’t mind Kush showing up at a Suns game and receiving a couple of standing ovations. That’s alright, I wasn’t there. And if he wants to be in “Too Tall" Jones’ corner for his second heavyweight fight, that’s OK. I don’t go to heavyweight fights. However, I have been going to Mamanita Speedway all summer and driving around the clay racetrack with the good oT boys, banging a few fenders, collecting dirt and grease and getting my weekly workout behind the wheel of a modified stock car. Saturday night, Kush showed up to hand out tr ophies to the winners of the season’s last race. That doesn’t bother me either. I only won $10.1didn’t win a trophy. What does bother me about Kush popping up around the Valley is that he appears to be doing It far one pur pose: to keep himself In the public eye. I’ve even been told Kush has hired a public relations firm to make sure the lids never dose. I don’t know tUs for a fact, but the former gridiron great’s actions point in that direction. Granted, public relations is an integral part of American life, as is making a but* and selling a product Kush, who many people apparently think is afoo an in tegral part of American Bfe, is reported to have made a few tax-free bucks over the years, what with a banquet here, a fund-raiser there. He has not denied the boost to his income. I refuse to feel sorry for the man. He played “King For A While,” lost the throne and apparently made off with a bundle. I also refuse to buy the product that is being offered by Kush and those around him. The idea of Kush paying for the services of an imagemaker is not quite as disturbing as the thought that be may feet the need to change Ms public image or, at best, play up the batter side of it. If Kush in fact has been mistreated by the University, as he says is the case, then why go to the trouble of building another image? If he is telling the truth about not punching Kevin 11atledge and about not attempting tocover it up, why the llth-hour effort? “Iran Man” Kush Is beginning to act like a two-bit politician who is down in the polls and changing hats just as fast as he can locate new ones to wear. And like a los ing candidate, he has crossed the bounds of good taste. It appears that Kush is mounting a full-scale assault on the public’s emotions. WBl Kush and the Image-makers have us beUeve that the public is, at least in part, reqieusibie for Ms downfall by not >M>M***"g enough? In the future, the pubBc may even be shown a photo of Frank, stooped over in prayer, pleading with Dante to go easy on us. Kush does not appear to be suffering a great deal from v his dethronement and 1am beginning to think he actually is enjoying Ms new-found, self-defined role of fall guy. Poof Frank. Brace Kaplan Staff Reporter Letters to the Editor W e w on't tolerate it! Edher: An open letter to all concerned ASU students At this, time, the way of life in the United States and the ideals that it is baaed upon are being abused and degraded by Iranian students who, as guests in this country, are reaping the benefits of the American educational system. We must put a halt to the abuse our systems and symbols of liberty face when used as a platform by Iranian students in support of a regime that is jeopardizing American lives and universal systems of communication. The outrage that is created by such actions compels us to use the only civilised educated means of expression that is available to us today: "» « H f those with the power of implementation aware of our outrage through letters stating: Due to the recent events in Iran jeopardising the safety of American citizens in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, imperilling (sic) internationally accepted lines of communication and representation, and also due to the added insult of demonstrated support of theae actions by Iranian students in the United States, our only logical recourse is to call for 1) the discontinuance of further shipments of military supplies and parts to Iran, 2) a freeze on Iranian financial assets in U.S. banks, and 3) the deportation of all Iranian students from this country. As raponsibie American citizens, we cannot afford to allow the ultimate universal channcla of communication available for negotiation and understanding between nations — in this instance, the United States and Iran —to fall under the threat of destruction by terrorist activities and the support thereof in this country. Ballooning is on the upswing. Wor ldwide, the sport has grown from 390 balloons ia Iff* to about 2,000 now. The increasing popularity of ballooning in the Valley waa evident last week at the fifth annual Thunderbird Invitational Balloon Race held on the grounds at the American Graduate School of Management a t 50th Avenue and Greenway Road. Sixty-two balloons participated in the race through the Glendale skies. Thousands of spec tators turned out tocheer the pilots and g ran d crews aa one by one the air-filled crafts slipped up and away. Jim Kitchel, a balloonist for seven years and a participant last weekend, said anyone can le a n to fly a balloon. “The Federal Aviation Administration re quirements to obtain a wingleas license aren’t as difficult as those for a winged license,” Kit chel said. A wingless license is needed for balloons while a winged license is required for airplanes. Ten hours of flight time and a written exam must be completed for a winged license. Kitchel said equipment costs between $7,000 and $14,000 for the balloon (called an "envelope"), burners and a gondola or basket Balloon sixes vary from 40 to 90 feet in diameter and carry up to four adults.
