Football is the rage along Ex position Boulevard, and nobody does it like the Southern CahforASU found it out Saturday while inside the Coliseum. The Sun Devils found out that the pregame prediction that UCLA was probably the beat *6 team in the country was painfully ac curate, and also that even though you know something is coming, there isn’t always enough time to get out of its way. The Sim Devils knew Freeman McNeil, the Bruins premier tailback, was coming. He had to, it’s the only way U CLA could keep from being blown out of its own sanctuary. But why the Sim Devils couldn’t epsiEgg stop the conference’s leading rusher was not really a matter of bmptama so much as a matter of imfcfag in t e wrong place at the wrong time. ASU was Mindsided by a junior fullback named Dan Lei, who dkhi’t even figure in the Brums scrimmage piano until the begimtii* of last week. Everyone knows U C LA doesn’t use its fuBbock. He’s supposed to be ornamentation, a “ gofer” when the “star” gets tired. Lei would have none of the second-fiddle act and racked ip U key yards on 9 carries. U tk f split Haebacfcen to cootala Malone aad wing stunts and superior physical line play to stop the ASU backfMd, the Bruins all but destroyed what once was con sidered a relatively decent run ning team. With 63 yards on *7 at tempts, there wasn’t a sole out side imitating anyone from die Sun Devil backfMd. In the first half, Malone constantly found himself fat a third-and-long situa tion after trying to stick needles in cement with the running game. It was the pass, or it was nothing atafl. When flanker Ron Washington went out of the game for good an the second offensive play of the game for ASU with a broken none, it looked like die running game would have to be die Devils’ forte. California is the land of fantasy anyway, so it was appropriate for ASU to enter a Disneyland game plan and throw like it was a BYU prototype. And except for an end zone in terférence call on cornerback Ron Brown, which could have went either way, die fantasy would have come true for Owens and his band of merry men. If Malone’s performance was unbelievable, which it was in a fairy-tale sort of way, Melvin Hoover’s performance had to have the air of mythology around it. Hoover made everyone forget at times that the Devils’ No. 1 receiver, Washington, wasn’t even in die state let aio— in the game. With eight receptions for 139 yards, Hoover constantly made crucial catches that kept ASU drives alive via the pass. On their final drive that put the Sun Devils up 29-34, Hoover made four receptidhs that could be described only as fantas(y)dc. H ie two plays that decided the fate of the contest didn't fit into the overall picture that had two teams living a fantasy. They were dubious calls in the middle of Alice in Wonderland and Snow White. Oa a foartb-aad-l# from UCLA's 14-yard line, Malone let go the last hope far ASU with a pass to Hoover in the end tone with 1:04 to play. U CLA’s AllAmerica free safety Ken Easley was found guilty of pass in terference, and the fantasy lived on as Malone phmged from the one after the penalty was marked off to put ASU ahead 2*24. Vi sions of sugar plums and bowl bids danced along the ASU sideline and the group outside went into an imitation of Malone—passing. The,coding had a “Grinch That Stole Christmas” twist. The Bruins got the ball on the kickoff, and after a personal foul penalty on Devil reserve linebacker Louis Camptell, started a drive from ASU's 4t that would end up a ditto mark of the play that Just occur red. Brown, who d a tins he was “snug’’ with intended receiver Dokie Williams in the end sone, was called for interference aad substitute quarterback Steve Ramsey plunged from the I to win it for UCLA. When the Sun Devils, finally made the trip down the ramp to the dressing room, it was evident the fantasy was over. But it also was evident that UCLA was not handed a win, nor were the Devils a defeat by the referees. Both teams had the bruises to prove it and both admittedly felt they were in a contest that was par ex cellence. They were, and even with the aid of the famous smog and menagerie of freeways as a backdrop, the Figueroa foot ballers outside couldn’t match the magic of the game that Just took place—inside. Detective Bob Jones said Saqdy OMacki and Ron Wetzel, both of 90S S. Terrace Rd., were charged Nov. • with dam 1 misdemeanor theft. Jones said the two were arrested O ct 9 by ASU police of ficers Larry Angel and Garry Dirks as they loaded a bicycle allegedly stolen at Palo Verde West into a car parted at McAllister Avenue and Orange Street. Jones said Oaiecki, a quarterback and Wetzel, a tight end, were released on their own recognizance. Police are withholding the name of bite owner. Jones said the bicycle was valued at $100, which meant Oaiecki and Wetzel could have been ch a re d with felony counts, but m r t charged with misdemeanors. Sun Devil football coach Bob Owen, said be had no knowledge of the charges against the two freshmen. Jones said the lag between Osiecki’s and Wetzel’s arrests and the formal filing of charges was An* to the case load in the Maricopa County A tto rn e d office. The county attorney must sign each complaint, as must Jones and Tempe Justice Court Actel, before whom Oaiecki and Wetzel both will appear for their initial henring. Jones said both freshmen had no prior records. Neither player could be reached for comment Monday. A minute earlier, McNeil looked like he might be the game’s goat.
