Well then, sta rt screaming. Let’s d u ress far and away from the three Fs (Frank, Fred and football) to find th at Ariaona is not the only [dace where cries of “foul” are hurled to and fro among the giants of the Locker Room. And that’s not counting Woody Hayes, either. New York Yankees Manager Billy M artin was fired (again) by owner George Steinbrenner because the Mouth That Roared apparently had slugged, of all people, an Illinois marshmallow salesman during a Bloomington, Minn., hotel argument (What’d the salesman do to provoke M artin — threaten him with an armload of marshmallows?). The salesman eventually received between IS and 20 stitches for a cut Up. Martin received yet another in a long line of pink slips. Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn agreed with Steinbrenner’s decision, citing the Yankee owner’s dedication “to preserving baseball’s image.’’ Keep screaming, there’s more. Kuhn also has banned San Francisco Giants HaD-ofFamer Willie Mays from compensatory participation in baseball as a New York Met* batting coach because Mays has taken a public relations job with an Atlantic City, N J . , casino. Mays now can no longer wear a uniform, but still can mingle with players and participate in old-timers games. Big whoop. Mays’ “ouster” (oh, th at word) has prompted en tertainer Frank Sinatra to call for Kuhn’s removal. “OT Blue Eyes' ” statem ent, released through his own public relations firm, called the banning of Mays “ludicrous.” Cries far removing an athletic official — sounds like old home week, doesn’t it? So what you see is a string of conflicts th at obviously neither has begun nor ended with the Punishing Folaek. OK, let’s talk eligibility. ASU faces forfeiture of any or all of its three gridiron conference victories this season because of alleged violations of Pacific-10 Athletic Conference regulations concerning eight players’ academic eligibility. Pac-10 officials have stated that forfeiture is a possibility, but not an inevitability. Tied with A8(J for second place in the Pac-10 are the Huskies of the University of W ashington, the team the Sun Devils played Oct. 28, 1978 when Kush allegedly struck punter Kevin Rutledge and the team ASU opposed under Kush’s leadership for the last tim e Oct. 13, 1979. Washington kicker Rich Camarillo's eligibility still is in doubt. Although a Pac-10 assistant executive director has cleared Camarillo, the Huskies still might have to forfeit their three conference victories if the Pac-10 Council rules against Camarillo. Letters to the E dito r Both Washington and Ariaona State happen to be current Rose Bowl contenders. ABC will televise this week’s ASU-Stanford game nationally, meat likely because ASU is on the national map. not only for its team 's prowess, but because it's in such an ad m inistrative mess, athletically speaking. It makes good television (“Look, Ethel, there s the school in all th e trouble”). Today, leer differs«! investigations into the affairs of the .ASU departm ent of intercollegiate athletics are being, conducted. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Pacific-10 Athletic Conference, the Ariaona Departm ent of Public Safety and the athletic departm ent itself all are looking into possible recruiting mfraetions and other poesfely criminal violations th at may have been committed a t our University. W hat many believe to have been a phenomenon indigenous only to Tempo is occurring in many facets of the worlds of both collegiate and professional sport. Sports figures throwing or allegedly throwing (which is worse?) punches a t other people. “Conflicts of in terest” taking precedence over common sense, causing those among the most admired of athletes to be reduced to a self-seeking status. Eligibility con troversies th at may well lead to the stickiest sports wicket since somebody fixed the 1919 World Series. Hold on to your Rose Bowl money, folks. W e're looking ahead to the day when a 9-year-old just won’t have either th e interest or the faith to want to collect baseball (or football) cards. —Mark J . I know it m ust have been difficult for him to do so, but Frank left him no choice. For years Coach Kush has preached th at people should be responsible for their own actions. Well now it’s tune for Kush to suck up and be a man instead of a crybaby liar. H ub whole thing could have been avoided if he had the guts to stand up to his accusers. Instead he tried to get people to come down in character and cover up the truth. There is no doubt th at Frank Kush was one of the best football coaches around, but there is no place at ASU for dishonest staff or faculty. S ony Frank, but sometimes the truth hurts. R obert Menke said. “T hat leads us all to believe we’re going to have a very good first sem ester.” M enke said he was concerned a t the beginning of th e sem ester th a t th ere m ight be a decrease in on-campus recruitm ent because of th e country’s economic woes. “G enerally, when th e economy is in good shape, the activity in this office is good,” he said. “W hen the economy is down, we really feel th e difference.” B ut M enke said he has been “pleasantly surprised” by the incre ased activity in his his office. Although several recruiters did cancel scheduled visits to ASU, Menke said for each cancellation, “we’ve been able to pick up a t least tw o new companies or em ployers.” Menke said one possible reason for C areer Services’ success in helping find jobs for December graduates is th a t A risona appears “Generally, when the economy w m good •hope, the activity in tkie office it good. ” to be in b e tte r shape economically than other segmen ts of th e country. He added th a t many companies appear to be “m ore optim istic than pessim istic about bringing in new talen t and new ideas.” The office uses th ree gauges to determ ine w hat th e job situation for graduates is really like, Menke said. New bolt foils typewriter thieves The num ber of recruiters, the num ber of job offers and eventually, th e num ber of students who are hired when th e sem ester ends, indicate how successful th e office is in placing students. Of th e th ree gauges, only th e num ber of recruiters on campus this sem ester is known. B ut Menke indicated th a t because th a t to tal appears to be on the upswing, there is a good chance th e other tw o in dicators will also rise. Between 400 and 500 em ployers send job recruiters to ASU each year, Menke said. Students with degrees in technical fields such as engineering are the m ost sought after by recruiters because th ere is som ewhat of a scarcity of students in those areas, M enke said. So far th is sem ester, about 60 percent of the recruiting at ASU has been done by technical firm s. ASU lost 166,000 in typew riter thefts during the last 14 months, but with the installation of a 12 typew riter security bolt on each University machine robberies can be prevented, the chief of the University Police said. “We’ve tost seven typew riters, each with a replacement cost of 1800 each,“ George Bays said. -«The security device is not a lock but a bolt that connects the typew riter to the base of the desk. Bays said the University is purchasing the security bolts from International Business Machines Carp, for 82 each. Including in stallation, each bolt will cost IS. “The thief would have to take the typew riter apart with tools,” he said. “With these new devices it will be more difficult for someone to try to remove them . “In the past, typew riters have been taken during the night by persons posing as vendors or University employees.“ Faculty and staff members can order the typew riter security bolts from the university purchasing departm ent. “So far we’ve had doaens of requests,” Bays said. “Sometime in the future all our typew riters will be secured.” Do you belong atMagnavox? Pop machines on the ASU campus sold 14,604 more cans of soda products last month than in September 1978, representing a 16 percent increase. Jim T u rn er, full-service manager at Coca-Cola Bottling Company said these figures show that people are believing that, “Things go better with Coke.” He said the trend is towards an increase in the sale of sugarfree products, despite the warning displayed on diet soda cans, “Use of this product may be hazardous to your health.” More than 28,500 cans of diet pop were sold in the 81 campus machines, of the 100,660 total cans sold on campus in Sep tember. The product is growing in all markets, Turner said. “Phoenix is a very good sugarfree market.
