H arry R osenzw eig, president of th e non-profit booster organization for th e past 16 y ea rs, said th e Sun A ngel board o f directors w as opposed to w hat it se e s as th e lack of judgm ent and due process on th e part o f M iller. "We cannot anticipate w hat th e effect of th e rem oval of Frank K ush w ill have on fan participation, recruitm ent of a th letes and our financial ability to aid the U n iversity, R osenzw eig said . "Therefore w e are suspending plans to build th e A bU golf cou rse, and w e cannot consider com pletion o f th e south end zone o f th e A SU stadium ," he added. R osenzw eig said th e Sun A ngels w ere responsible for about $800,000 on construction o f th e stadium addition which w ould have brought th e capacity of th e stadium to 86,000. C alif. — O ffi­ cials said Tuesday that Cali­ fornia's worst earthquake in eight years broke the major canal bringing water to the arid border region, leaving some cities in the area with only a two-day water supply. That assessment came from city and council officials who met in the garage of the Imperial County fire station beneath neon lights left askew. The meeting was jarred by one of the hundreds of aftershocks from Monday afternoon’s quake, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. At least 91 persons received Injuries in the quake, almost all of them minor. M ore about Proposal by state legislators to 'redim e' M iller's salary continued tram peg. 1 Tuesday th a t C orpatein s proposal won’t carry much steam in the Legislature — if it gets that far. “With the court case pending, I think it (Corpttein’s proposal) was prem ature," said Rep. John W ettaw, R-Flagstaff. “As far as the ASU budget is concerned, I think th e Legislature should stay out of meddling in University affairs. It is up to the Board of Regents to submit budgets to the Legislature. ‘Redlining’ is un­ professional in this regard, W ettaw said. “I am not ready to get in­ volved in a conflict which would be detrim ental to the academic and athletic programs at ASU." W ettaw added he felt if “redlining” became a practice of the Legislature, then future, p o s s ib ly u n s c ru p u lo u s , legislators might use “redlining" as a measure for political con­ trol. “Let's say a legislator wants to have his brother-in-law hired as a biology professor,” said W ettaw, who is himself an associate professor of chemistry at NAU. “He could have it so that the budget line for that professor’s salary is 'redlined,' so that nobody but his brother-in-law can be hired because no money can be paid anyone else," he said. Miller called Rep. Tony W est, B-Phoenix, a “liar," responding to comments West made in the State Press Tuesday stating Miller came to ASU under “a cloud of suspicion.” W est alleged Miller had "difficulties” with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the governing body for collegiate athletics in the United States, over a recruiting con­ troversy at California State University at Long Beach where Miller served as athletic director until 1871. The furor was over alleged recruiting violations on the part of former CSLB basketball coach Je rry Tarkanian. “Mr. West is a liar. The Long Beach incident surfaced 2 to 8 years after I left that institution. I did not arrive here under any cloud,” Miller said. West said if Miller is still on the ASU payroll after the first of the year, the University is going to have “serious problems with the Legislature.” W est is the chairman of the House U niversity Budget subcommittee. “What will happen is that ASU will suffer from ’passive neglect' in the next year. ASU will be overlooked, and there won't be anyone championing their cause. I am not an ad­ vocate of this position, but I know it's going to happen." He added ABU’S position on the Legislature’s financial totem pole wiD be shuffled lower as a result of Miller’s action. “We saw a mockery of justice yesterday (Monday, when Miller announced his reasons for firing Kush), a kangaroo court at its worst. October 17.1979 B rando, M a rtin Sheen star In V ietnam saga A p o c a ly p s e ' is a w e s o m e a n d c o m m e rc ia l _____ The beginning of "Apocelypee Now" is awesome. In an open area before the thick and silent Vietnamese jungle, duzt is wafted by the wind from helicopter blades bussing ominously. Jim Morrison is singing “The End." Suddenly, the jungle erupts into fire, the billowing blames rising like gods in Hindu mythology. The film begins and ends in torrents of blames, for this is the story of trial by fire. The plot, loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s short novel, “H eart of Darkness." is by now familiar to nearly everyone. Briefly, the film follows the progress of Capt. Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen) who is assigned to find and kill Col. W alter E . K urtz (M arlon Brando), a Green Beret officer using "unsound methods." Kurtz is, in fact, completely mad, and leads a tribe of renegade American soldiers and Cam­ bodian natives on forays, fighting a war of his own, a virtual god to his followers. It was an inspiration to set Conrad's story in Vietnam. 'Hie obvious connection is im ­ perialism: the British pretend they are in the Congo to civilize the savages, but they are really there from greed and search of ivory. The A m ericans in Vietnam were propping up a fascist dictatorship in the name of freedom. Strangely, this theme is not developed in the movie, while Conrad drives home this point again and again. In its stead. D irect« Francis Ford Coppola pretentiously imposes the theme he got from Sir Jam es Frazer’s “The Golden Bough:” the ritual killing of the old king (Brando) and the bringing in of the new king (Sheen). The film cuts sophom orically from th e sacrifice of an ox to the murder of Brando, just in case we didn’t get the point. The imposition of this theme is not particularly relevant and hardly appear justified. K urtz is reading good literature out in the jungle, “The Golden Bough" and Jessie L. Weston’s “From Ritual to Romance." Good books don't help in his dark night, however, and Coppola calls into question the efficacy of the liberal a its in civilizing the beast in man. It reminds one of the Nazis who read Goethe in the evenings and then went to work in. the con­ centration camps the next morning. Molly Brown is basically an unattractive character. She is a nouveau riche social climber who attem pts to buy her way into Denver society at the turn of the century. In the early scenes the per­ form ing difficulty is com­ pounded. Before she hits it rich, Molly Brown is so uncivilised as to be positively Neanderthal. Any actress who can over­ come the unpleasantness of Molly Brown’s personality and build a likeable performance energetic enough to carry the show’s overweight book is worth her weight in Colorado silver. If the producer can t find a Molly up to the challenge there is no show. Fortunately for aB concerned, the Windmill has found the perfect person. Isabelle Farrell is a g n a t Molly. She turns one of the moat d ista ste fu l ch aracters in American musical eomedy into a delight without losing any of Molly’s bite. Her Molly is likeable, but no sentimental drip. But Miller came on strong Monday in sweeping both ends of the morning-afternoon doubleheader, including a conference on Kush’s home turf. WhAe a s aae is sere when or where the next shoot-out will take place, one can be certain it will be given a Valley wide TV and radio audience. ____A quick rundown of the conference score­ cards gives Kush the first three wins and Miller the next two.
