But despite recent disclosures th at the country's 54 Titan II nuclear ™—l— — a third of which are based 100 miles south of here fat Tucson — might M l Americans (net—H of Commies, most of Ariaona's own senators and representatives seem relatively un concerned. The A ir Fares has admitted th at in the past five years nine Arisons airmen have been exposed to toxic nitrogen tetroxide fumes because of leaks fat the rockets’ liquid fuel systems. One of the airmen had to be hospitalised. Nitrogen tetroxide, an oxidiser for rocket fuel becomes highly poisonous when it leaks out of the missile and combines with air. In minute doses, it causes severe lung damage. In higher quantit ies, it's lethal. . , Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan., has called for the removal of all Titan II missies in his home state, along with the rest in Arizona and Arkansas. Two Kansas representatives also are worried. Itcpahttrsa Bob W hittaker and Democrat Dan GMekm»n are skeptical because last week when Air Force officers assured them the leaks wefre small and not hazardous, they failed to mention the nine Arisons airmen who had been affected. Concern about the Titans began 18 months ago when a major leak of fuel oxidiser from a misale at Rock, Kan., killed two men, injured others and forced evacuation of the surrounding residents. The Air Force blamed the accident on human error. But meanwhile, Ariaona’s Republican warlord, Sen. B u ry Goldwater, inaists he wants the Titans to remain chef barfield in Arisons no m atter what is done with them in Kansas. A i ■i*-------- for Rep. Bob Stump. D-Aris.. said the congressman won’t take a stand on the issue until the House Armed Services Committee gets more facts. “Obviously it’s serious enough th at it would take some serious study and that’s been requested, he said. “The problem is what do you use for a deterrent force if you dtoms"*-1* them a l at once? The A ir Force is going to have to come up with some recom mendations in th at regard.“ . Bob Maynes, an side of Sen. Dentils D eC oudnl DAris., said Dole’s stance might merely be a ploy to gain exposure for next yearns presidential race. He added DeConcini is “scrutinizing" the safety of Ariaons s Titans, but is nowhere near ready to advocate dismantling the missiles. «Tfc*’s kind of Urn throwing out the baby with the bathw ater,” he said. “If it turns out safety of main tenance procedures have been iadadequate, you im prove the safety and maintenance procedures. You don't shut down the biggest ICBM (Intercontinental Missle) system you’ve got going. That just im’t rationa l ” Maynes said Air Fores officials told DeCondni last week th at the nation’s Titans have been averaging 27 to 25 nitrogen tetroxide leaks per y e * for the past four or five years. Although some have bean extremely minute, there have boon another IS leaks to date this year, he said. . . . ., Chris Shuey, a spokeman for Ariaona Mobmsaaca for Survival, said leaks in the Titan dem onstrate they’re just as great a threat as the attack they’re suppose!? deterring. "It's another s is a p lr of the type of thing that goes on behind the scene,” Shuey said. “Military and civilian employees are facing these job hazards. “Rather than H-bomb secrets, these are things you don’t hear much about. U’s an example of how the weapons industry comes in conflict with the human condition.” . . . He’s right. Although the A ir Force insists the toxic h afrf are too miniscule to be really harmful, no one would have known about them at all if the Pentagon had had its way. TV-----la rfcgad with 18 Titan II missiles, each 100 tim es more powerful than the atom bomb th at destroyed Hiroshima to end World W ar II. Fifteen of them have been leaking the poison gas since they were installed 17 years ago. ^ j It’s about tfa— Arisons* leaders do something besides swallowing excuses. In its promotion of national defense, the military has forsaken the public It’s supposedly protecting. Letters to the Editor If thafs a fair raise, HI finish off my hat Editor: An open letter to the A nions Legiàhtere: I am an employee of Ariaona State University and I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction with the 6 percent cost-ofliving increase we received during 1979. This 6 percent is less than half of the national rate of inflation, which is 15 percent. It seems doubly unreasonable when you realise th at only once in the past 12 years has our cost of living equaled the rate of inflation, which means every year our salaries m ust be streehed farther in order to survive while we move closer to the poverty level. I learned the state budget has an excess of more than $100 m itten and therefore, I find it hard to accept th at we could not have been given a higher increase. In closing, I wish to express my hopes of receiving a higher in crease next year. Needless to say, this w il be one of the main issues on which my vote and the votes of my follow employees w il be decided on election day. "The only good thing that came out of th at game eras the punting," Stobart said. "We didn’t do anything on defense or offense." That’s true. Ridgway’s 617 total yards in punts looked mighty impressive stacked up against Toledo’s 77 net yards. ‘Punting is going to be to my advantage,” Ridgway said, "But Fm not sure HI like it. I guess IH get used to it. I really feel comfortable with the place kicking, but 111 get used to the punting soon." Then what? W ith th e way Biigway kicks field goals, it might not only he to his advantage to know how to punt, it might be his only ad vantage. There was no indication as to what day they were ready to play. Frisbee throwers going for birdies An open tournament this weekend will allow you to try your hand at “diac-o” golf. Before you get visions of roller skaters hooking and bopping to the Bee Gees, put your mind to rest. The discs will be Frisbees flying, around Papago Park at Curry and College in Tempe Saturday and Sunday. And the game will be golf, adjusted for Frisbee skills, with talented arms taking the place of clubs and putters. A $6 entry fee will cover 72 holes of Frisbee golf, 96 each day. Top finishers in each of three divisions — men’s A and B and women's, will receive prizes. Registration starta at 9 a.m. Saturday. Frisbee fanciers can win a flying disc Wednesday if they put a spinner through an accuracy hoop. The ASU Frisbee Club will be in front of Hayden Library Wednesday with information on club membership and the formation of an ultimate Frisbee team. 20% O F F _ ALL SERVICES W ITH THIS AD H a lr c a t t e r e GEFDEN P e P u r llM Nudate A d d j 45 E.
