Alm ost tw o months ago, a Church Rock, N .M ., uranium mill owned by U nited N uclear, Inc. sprung a leak in the dam it used to hold radioactive w aste w ater. The 90-million-gallon deluge of liquid and sludge poured into the Rio Puerco, which runs through th e N avajo reservation and eventually into the L ittle Colorado. The gunk traveled alm ost 46 miles — as far as Cham­ bers, which is about 30 miles from th e ArizonaNew Mexico border. Facte to th e Navajo population, trying to subsist on im ported w ater, understandably afraid to drink from the Puerco, not knowing how many of th eir anim als drank from those contam inated pools before the accident was discovered. Arizona H ealth D epartm ent officials told the Letters to Phoenix press they “still can’t say” how much of a hazard the spill poses to th e people and their livestock. Those sam e — mostly anonymous — officials w ent on to say t h a t . . . “the testing indicates little possibility of ex­ tensive radioactivity contam ination. . . " B ut here’s the ra h . W ater, ground, and air tests — not to mention testin g of people and animals — have not y e t been com pleted. In other w ords, th e verdict isn’t anyw here near in on the possible future calam ities of th e disaster. W e know th a t six people, five of them children, had to be sent to Ixm Alamos for intensive testin g as victim s of “high exposure.“ And we know a veterinary team still is in th e process of testin g the livestock — upon which the N avajo depend for th eir existence — not only for th e presence of radioactivity but also for such goodies as arsenic, lead and plutonium. 8e. The flip side of a spill is a clean-up, right? And logic would dictate th a t a dangerous spill would precipitate a quick and thorough clean-up, no? A pparently not. The two schools, along with a ground safety school, ara moving from the center to the off-campus location this week to expand. Students in the aircraft school study crash impact, human tolerance, restraint system s, tire hasards and accident photography. The vehicle school focuses on accident th eo ry , vehicle dynamics, injury mechanisms, accident photography and ac­ cident reconstruction. "We’re not beck where the W right Brothers had their first plane crash," said assistant director Bill Allen of the crash survival school. "W e're keeping up with the current state of the art today.” "Keeping up” involves the aircraft students in simulated field exercises for evaluating aircraft at Army National Guard or A ir National Guard bases. “We’ve ‘killed’ people about every way you can think of.” ADen said. “When you weigh the cost of safety measures against the cost of human lives, it’s worth it.” A ccid en t in v e s tig a to rs determ ine cause» of injuries so that engineers can better design aircraft and ground vehicles. Various accident injuries have led to padded dashboards, airc ra ft helnaets, shoulder harnesses and crash-resistant fuel system s for Army helicopters. "The courses are intensive; eight hours a day,” Allen said. The two-week vehicle course and the three-week aircraft course are designed for adults involved in safety fields, such as police officers, doctors, paramedics and professional a ccid en t in v e stig a to rs. However, Allen added he hopes ASU students wfll get involved. Students can receive con­ tinuing education units for the courses, and Allan said he hopes the schools will -be accredited before the end of the year. The IS-year-old investigation -schools, formerly with the Flight Safety Foundation, have been at ASU for eight years. Flagstaff students are living in their ears; Tucson studsnts reside in dorm itories which have missed inspection far years; and in Temps 1,000 persons are waiting to move into a dorm. The problems at the three .Arisooa universities were explored at the Associated Students meeting in Tucson Saturday. NAU Associated Students President Mike CebeDos said students were living in their ears and tents. "I just hope thdy can find housing before the whiter comes,” CebeUos said. Susie Eastridge, ASU Associated Students president, said the main problem at ASU is overbooking and lack of housing for graduate and married students. Flip May, president of the UA Associated Students said, “The fire hazards at the UA dorms are unbelievable. We’ve had the same problems for 20-30 years and it’s about tim e we do something about it. * “If something isn’t done within six months, the county Health Departm ent should be called.” ASA also discussed the possible tuition increase. Eastridge said the board will try to stall the increase to four-semester intervals, rather than » 20-percent hike next fall. T m sure the tuition will not go up until next fall, but it would be best for the increase to come gradually,” she said. The cost-^-education formula, which was presented to the regents, was agreed on by ASA as a good guideline for the hike. “If we follow the Consumer Price Index, tuition win be about 84,200 in eight years,” Eastridge said. Gone are the days of set shots, unrefined ball-handling skill* and awkward floor movement. Increasingly, college players move the ball with confidence, and smoothly execute a variety of shota. It’s tough to be considered for college pity if you're under 5-foot-9. The 1979-80 Sun Devil squad is evidence of the progr ess. An —"«Miiy large group of 38 women dressed last Wednesday to contend for spots on first-year coach Juliene Simpson's team, leaving no room for mediocrity. Simpson selected 14 to represent ASU in its first year in the W estern Collegiate Athletic Association. Simpson's choices include three forwards taller than 6 feet and Fran Clemente, a transfer from Old Dominion University, last year’s AIAW national champion. Each team member has impressive credentials. One senior, seven juniors, one sophomore and five freshmen comprise the Sun Devil squad. Only four have returned from last year's maroon-and-gold "I had 17 or 18 guards to look at and there was a lot of talent out there. I am pleased with the results of the tryouts though," she said. With what she has seen of this year’s group Simpson said. "I would say that after two more recruiting years we'll be contenders for the conference title.” The WCAA includes UCLA (1978 AIAW champion), USC, San Diego 8tate, Cal State—Long Beach, Cal State—Fullerton, UA and ASU. Simpson anticipates the team 's strengths to be the speed of the guards, the height of the for­ wards and the control of the boards. She suspects the inside game will be its weakness. T h a t’s due to the inexperience of some of our players. In a couple years I think it will be our strength," she said. "We’ll try to be a disciplined team ,” 8fanpeon added. "When we fast break, w ell do it with control. When we prom, the opponent w ont dribble down and score on us. That’s the sort of discipline I’m talking about."
